Soweit wir feststellen konnten, der allererste Auszug aus Gass’ damals noch unveröffentlichtem
Buch über die Lewis und Clarke-Expedition – ganze vier Jahre vor dem offiziellen
Bericht herausgegeben, der 1814 in Weimar erschien! Zuvor war lediglich ein 1-seitiger Bericht
in den Allgemeinen Geographischen Ephemeriden veröffentlicht worden. – Patrick Gass
(1771–1870) begleitete als Truppführer die erste Überlandexpedition der Amerikaner an die
Pazifikküste. Man zog von St. Louis los und folgte dem Missouri nach Norden, überquerte die
Rocky Mountains und gelangte, dem Clearwater River, dem Snake River und dem Columbia
River entlang schließlich im Sommer 1805 an den Pazifik. An der Mündung des Columbia baute
man ein Fort und überwinterte dort. Im März 1806 begann die Rückreise. Bei der Überquerung
der Rocky Mountains trennten sich Lewis und Clark, im August trafen sie am Missouri wieder
zusammen und beendeten die Reise gemeinsam. – Henze I, 574 ff. und III, 231

Original red cloth decorated in gilt and black, decoratively lettered in gilt, all edges
gilt. Oblong folio (26 × 35 cm /10½x13¾“). Slight foxing to plates, stronger so to
endpapers and half-title. Stitching somewhat loosened. Slight paling to gilt spinelettering
some bumping to spine ends. Still a very good copy! € 6300,–
Very rare deluxe reissue, in album form, of the engraved plates first published in the Laplace
voyage account ‚Campagne de Circumnavigation de la Fregate l‘Artemise, 1841–65’. As Forbes
notes, this ‚has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few
collections of Pacific voyages … The plates are on large paper, and the text, written by one
of the participants (Henricy), contains brief observations on the voyage. There is one Hawaiian
view by Edmond Paris, another Laplace voyage participant, titled ‘Honorourou, Capitale
d’Ouahou, vu du Mouillage’. This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid
of Edmond Paris, who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates
better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text.“ (Forbes 3535). – Laplace’s second voyage
(1837–1840) was meant to be a supplementary expedition to Du Petit-Thouars’, its main aim
