Siut, Girgeh, Luxor and Assuan, and<br />
could follow the Nile up to Derr –<br />
a portion of the river that was still<br />
unknown at that time. He made<br />
close observations of the river and<br />
‚his illustrations gave Europeans an<br />
impression of ancient and modern<br />
Egypt alike. His greatest geographical<br />
achievement was the 29-plate map<br />
of the Nile between Cairo and Derr – the first map of that part of the river that was entirely<br />
based on the observations of an eye-witness‘ (transl. from Henze). Norden’s work was ‚the<br />
first detailed survey of Egypt by a European and he most important prior to the ‘Description<br />
