Langen Foundation
Since opening its doors in 2004, the Langen
Foundation has been offering the public an opportunity
to experience art, architecture and landscape in
an atmosphere of balanced harmony. The exhibition
centre, initiated and founded by art collector
Marianne Langen, is located on a former missile base
in the midst of the lower Rhine countryside and was
designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, with the
aim of creating an intense connection between
interior and exterior space. Viktor and Marianne’s art
collection, begun in the 1950’s, forms the basis of
the Langen Foundation’s permanent collection.
With around three hundred works, 20th-century
Western Painting forms one focus of the collection,
while Japanese religious art, ink painting and
narrative painting, with around five hundred works,
represent the second major focus. The Japanese
collection of Viktor and Marianne Langen is among
the most important collections of Japanese art outside
Japan and, with its scrolls, screens and sculptures,
gives a fascinating impression of the diversity of
Japanese artistic creativity from the 12th to the 19th
century.
Apart from the regular presentations of the various
aspects and areas of the Viktor and Marianne Langen
Collection, the exhibition programme comprises solo
and themed temporary exhibitions devoted to
contemporary art.

Seit ihrer Eröffnung 2004 bietet die Langen Foundation dem
Publikum die Möglichkeit, Kunst, Architektur und Landschaft in
einem Zusammenklang zu erleben. Das von der Sammlerin
Marianne Langen initiierte und gestiftete Ausstellungshaus liegt
auf einer ehemaligen NATO-Basis inmitten der niederrheinischen
Landschaft und wurde von dem japanischen Architekten Tadao
Ando entworfen, mit der Absicht, eine intensive Verbindung von
Innen und Außen herzustellen. Grundstein der Langen Foundation
ist die Sammlung Viktor und Marianne Langen, deren Anfänge in
den fünfziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts liegen.
Mit etwa dreihundert Werken bildet die westliche/europäische
Malerei des 20. Jahrhunderts einen Schwerpunkt der Sammlung,
religiöse Kunst, Tuschmalerei und narrative Malerei Japans stellen
mit rund fünfhundert Werken den zweiten großen Bereich. Die
Japan-Sammlung Viktor und Marianne Langens zählt zu den
bedeutendsten Sammlungen japanischer Kunst außerhalb Japans
und vermag von der Vielfalt japanischen Kunstschaffens vom
12. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert zu vermitteln.
Das Ausstellungsprogramm umfasst neben regelmäßigen Präsentationen
unterschiedlicher Aspekte und Bereiche der Sammlung
Viktor und Marianne Langens monografisch oder thematisch
angelegte Wechselausstellungen, die sich der Gegenwartskunst
widmen.
