The "<strong>Gartenarbeitsschule</strong>n" offers children from pre-schools and<br />
schools a range of opportunities for environmental learning. There<br />
are 14 such "<strong>Gartenarbeitsschule</strong>n" in Berlin, with different<br />
specialities, including for example caring for animals<br />
(sheeps,geese,goats) or also various alternative energy sources.<br />
They work locally at the district level. Currently Berlin has 23<br />
districts, some with as many as 300 000 inhabitants.<br />
WEDDING DISTRICT GARDENING SCHOOL<br />
The "<strong>Gartenarbeitsschule</strong>" in the <strong>Wedding</strong> district was established<br />
in 1950. It endeavours to combinethe tradition of reform pedagogy<br />
from the Arbeitsschul movement of the 1920s with the current<br />
demands for environmental education.<br />
WORKING GARDEN...<br />
Between April and September every year some 40 to 50 classes or<br />
groups (approximately 750 pupils) come to the gardens of the<br />
"<strong>Gartenarbeitsschule</strong> <strong>Wedding</strong>" each week. Importance is attached<br />
to combining ecological and botanical aspects with practical<br />
experience.<br />

School groups can carry out project<br />
weeks at the "<strong>Gartenarbeitsschule</strong><br />
<strong>Wedding</strong>". For example, one group of<br />
the Rehberge Primary School spent<br />
an enjoyable and instructive week in<br />
the garden working on a project<br />
entiteld "Experiencing, grasping and<br />
un<strong>der</strong>standing nature".<br />
Some girls are working at the pond.<br />
Wood trail<br />
Un<strong>der</strong> the slogan "Wood -<br />
Possibilities for sustainable use", a<br />
wood trail has been developed on the<br />
basis of the design by an advanced<br />
biology class as an entry for the<br />
<strong>Wedding</strong> Environment Competition<br />
