IT IS IN ITS SECOND YEAR: elegance and quality are once again a benchmark. The Voyeur Jazz Festival fills both summer and autumn with good
jazz, from the purest of sounds to fusion. One of Spain’s best festivals. This year, the mains star is George Benson, but the rest of the constellation is also dazzling

George Benson (Pittsburgh, 1943) has a long career behind
him, and many think he is one of the best guitarists in the
world. He is a jazzman who, nevertheless, has dabbled with
great success in the world of pop, winning no less than
three Grammies. The quality of albums like ‘Breezin’ and
‘The Masquerade’ was a calling card for the likes of Quincy
Jones, Roberta Flack and James Taylor with whom he
has worked. His presence on the island on July 29 at the
Gran Casino de Mallorca is a magnificent piece of news
that his fans will receive with enthusiasm.
But the other artists invited are also stunning. Over the
months to come we will be able to see Paquito de Ribera
(October 31 at the Auditórium), Roy Haynes (November
12, Gran Casino), Brad Mehldau (November 18, Conservatory)
and the Blind Boys of Alabama (November 25,
Auditórium), all of them exceptional jazz musicians.
This will be in autumn and after Benson has fired the starting
gun, Kool and the Gang will also be performing at the
Gran Casino de Mallorca but on September 10. The band
that is to visit us has been together for four decades ever
since they met in their birthplace Ohio and formed their
first group in 1964. To give us an idea of their success
worldwide over the years, we should point out that altogether
they have sold 100 million records, and have been
awarded 27 gold and platinum records. Kool and the Gang
can switch effortlessly from one style to another; jazz is
only one of their facets. They have become so big thanks to
their funk, their command of soul, their disco hits and their
experiments with rhythm and blues.

Pop Gefilde groesste Erfolge gefeiert hat, wie es seine drei
Grammies beweisen. Die Qulitaet von Alben wie ‘Breezin’
oder ‘The Masquerade’ eroeffnete ihm den Zugang zu
Künstlern wie Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack und James
Taylor, mit denen er zusammengearbeitet hat. Sein Auftritt
auf der Insel am 29. Juli im Gran Casino de Mallorca, ist
daher eine sehr gute und von den Jazzliebhabern mit
Enthusiasmus aufgenommene Nachricht.

und nachdem Benson das Feuer eroeffnet hat, treten am 10.
September Kool and the Gang im Gran Casino auf . Diese
Formation ist seit 4 Jahrzehnten zusammen, seit sie sich in
ihrem Heimatstaat Ohio kennenlernten und 1964 ihre erste
Gruppe gruendeten. Um uns eine Vorstellung von ihrem
weltweiten Erfolg in dieser Zeit zu machen, muss nur
erwaehnt werden, das sie 100 Millionen Platten verkauft
und dafuer 27 Gold- und Platinplatten erhalten haben. Kool
and the Gang beherrschen eine Vielzahl von Stilarten,
wobei der Jazz nur eine ihrer Seiten darstellt: beruehmt
sind sie auch fuer ihren Funk, Soul, ihre Erfolge auf den
Tanzflaechen und ihre Experimente mit dem Rhythm and
Blues.
