«to Leave the daiLy grind
behind and to enjoy the moment»
The famous Swiss Television Presenter Kurt Aeschbacher has returned to skiing after a long break.
He has reignited his joy of skiing and says he could no longer give up taking his winter holidays in the
mountains, as he explains in this interview.
Mr. Aeschbacher, you have not been
on skis for 30 years. Why did you decide
to return to skiing in 2010?
The reason is simple. In Sertigtal close to
Davos, we have established a new home in
a little chalet. And there, it is not possible to
just walk around the entire winter, especially
when there are so many beautiful
pistes luring you from the house.
You have also been hanging around
with Jan Kindschi, the Coach of the
Swiss Demo Team. How did he manage
to reignite your enthusiasm for ski?
I did certainly bring the enthusiasm and
the will to try it again with me. However he
inspired me to work with new material and
to adapt my fairly old-fashioned skiing
style, thereby giving me the joy to ski again.
What is, for you, the main difference
between skiing in your childhood and
skiing now?
In my childhood, we had to go around on
skis that were two meters long and which
demanded a considerable amount of
strength to control. Moreover, the pistes
were prepared in a different way at the time.
What springs to mind when you hear
the term «Ski Holiday»?
The feeling of flying, of wind around your
ears, but also the feeling of beinggrounded.
What are some of the other aspects of
a perfect winter holiday for you?
Snow, naturally, which unfortunately is
becoming all too rare. But also, when the
sun is shining on top of everything, it
makes for a perfect day.
What, if skiing, gives you the most
enjoyment?
To leave the daily grind behind on a beautiful
winter day and live only for the moment.
Coach Swiss Snow Demo Team.
Why do you also attend ski school?
For me, it is the best way to improve my
skiing and to have a partner who gives me
advice and helps me discover new pistes.
Do you prefer group or private lessons?
To be honest, I am not really much of a
pack animal. I do not like making uniform
curves in the landscape with a crowd of
people. It would annoy me a little to ski
with a group, as I already have to work
with other people all day long.
In your opinion, what makes a good
ski instructor?
– 33 –
kurt aeschbacher
Empathy, patience, but also the energy to
simulate the pupil. Not an easy combination!
How would you assess your skiing
ability?
I cannot become an Olympic champion
anymore, but I am capable of skiing on
demanding pistes.
Could you imagine voluntarily giving
up winter holidays or long week-ends
in the mountains?
Never. Since we have our little house
in the mountains we go there, even when
the weather is bad, to escape the Zurich
mist. ●
