Ploberger made sure not to use any musical
themes known to him. He wanted to create
something completely new, and at the première
during the opening ceremony of the EPC Track
and Field on 8 September 1978, this new hymn
was very well received. Afterwards, the new
hymn was put in the archives of the Linz police
orchestra, without being published or printed.
The composer recalled that in the 90s, his music
was one more time requested for a USPE championship
in Belgium or the Netherlands, but after
that, he had a feeling that his hymn had fallen
into oblivion.
Then, on the occasion of the 2002 USPE
Congress in Düsseldorf, the Secretary General
asked the State Police Orchestra of the federal
state of North Rhine-Westphalia to rearrange and
perform the USPE hymn. All delegates attending
this Congress still well remember this impressive
performance. Alois Ploberger was overjoyed,
when his German colleague Josef Hastreiter
informed him of the new arrangement and after
receiving the corresponding CD, because now,
apart from a life recording by the Austrian
Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), there was a
studio recording and a print arrangement, too.
In August 2004, at the opening of the 5th
European Cycling Police Championship in
Windischgarsten, Austria, the now 70-year-old
Alois Ploberger once again conducted the
rearranged hymn which he had created 26 years
before. Of course he took great pleasure in doing
so and was particularly proud of the fact that
after the performance, he was awarded the USPE
medal of honour by the President and the
Secretary General.
Dietmar Schönhoff
13th European Five-Nation
Tennis Tournament of the
Police
Between 25-29 October 2004, the
Nederlandse Politie Sport Bond organised
the 13th Five-Nation Table Tennis
Tournament of the Police in
Noordwijkerhout.
Apart from the Netherlands, Great-Britain,
Austria, Belgium and Germany (selected
team of the federal state of North Rhine-
Westphalia) participated in the event.
Each national team consisted of a ladies’
team, a men’s A team, a men’s B team and
a senior team. Within the framework of
the nations ranking, the respective teams
of each country played each other. In its
capacity as defending cup champion, the
selected team from Germany had high
hopes when travelling to the Netherlands.
Below the scores of the international
matches played:
Austria - Germany 1:3
Great-Britain - Austria 2:2
Germany - Belgium 3:1
Germany - Netherlands 4:0
Great-Britain - Germany 2:2
Great-Britain - Belgium 3:1
Netherlands - Great-Britain 2:2
Netherlands - Belgium 3:1
Austria - Netherlands 2:2
Belgium - Austria 2:2
Thus, the German team remained undefeated
and was able to defend the nations’
cup.
Nations ranking:
1. Germany 3.5 : 0.5
2. Great-Britain 2.5 : 1.5
3. Netherlands 2 : 2
4. Austria 1.5 : 2.5
5. Belgium 0.5 : 3.5
The Secretary General of the USPE,
Dietmar Schönhoff from Düsseldorf, was
also happy to accept the invitation extended
by the “Nederlandse Politie Sport
Boond“. He was enthusiastic about the
fairness and the high level of the competitions.
After the fascinating and excellent finals,
the event drew to a close with the medals
ceremony and the festive banquet. The
outstanding and kind hospitality of our
Dutch colleagues and the fantastic mood
amongst the contestants made this family
of the Five-Nation Table Tennis
Tournament grow even closer.
A particular thank-you goes to the organising
team of our hosts, Henk Lodder, Bas
van der Bas and Ronald van Ham.
Winand Lentzen, Germany
