Abstract
Abstract
An entirely original pipe construction for industrial hydraulic engineering and urban water supply
and sanitation has been developed by combining an internal thin-walled plastic pipe and an
additive high strength jacket pipe of textile-reinforced concrete. The use of textile reinforcements
consisting of alkali resistant multifilament yarns is a novel concept in the development of
concrete pipes. The key feature of this innovation is the combination of the plastic’s favourable
hydraulic properties and the significantly increased strength of the textile-reinforced fine grained
concrete layer. The inner thin-walled plastic pipe (e.g. PE) is primarily for fluid transportation.
Internal (e.g. internal pressure) and external loads (e.g. earth loads on buried pipes) are
predominantly carried by the external textile-reinforced concrete jacket pipe. Such textile-
reinforced concrete multilayer pipe systems have the advantage of a reduced dead weight whilst
maintaining the pipelines effectiveness.
This paper outlines the system’s characteristic load bearing behaviour and provides a structural
analysis of the multilayer pipe cross section based on experimental and theoretical results. It is of
particular interest to know the reaction of the pipe’s cross section to certain characteristic
rotation-symmetric and non-rotation-symmetric loads which result from the production process
(e.g. residual stresses) or operating conditions such as internal/external pressure, internal
vacuum, stability or earth loads. The typical internal stresses are then analysed. Using these
results, semi-analytical algorithms and solutions for the static analysis are given. This allows an
unproblematic integration into previously established methods of static analysis.
A brief overview of the current state of pipe systems and structural analysis methods is given
prior to the introduction, with particular focus on their applicability to non-homogenous multilayer
pipe constructions. A breakdown of the basic theoretical material that describes the
characteristic physical and mechanical properties of the relevant materials is then presented.
Based on this information, a derivation of the multi-layer wall’s mechanical parameters can be
specified.
The experimental and theoretical analyses of the service loading conditions are then interpreted
and discussed with the aid of appropriate tables and diagrams. Ideal computations of selected
pipe classes (SDRV-class, diameter) are performed where basic algorithmic software can be
written for more complex cases. The first order theory is only required. To improve the main
text’s clarity, data tables, diagrams, particular solutions and source codes are located in the
appendix.
Thesen
Thesen
außen liegenden Betonschichten (i = 2 … η) aufgenommen.
Ordnung.
Druckspannungen (Pressspannungen) generiert. Das innerste Betonelement (i = 2) weist
Theses
Theses
1. In order to optimise load capacity and usability whilst also considering economic factors,
composite materials and components are increasingly used in the construction industry.
A component is defined as a composite if its single components have been made
positively and/or non-positively as well. An entirely original pipe construction for industrial
hydraulic engineering and urban water supply and sanitation has been developed by
combining an internal thin-walled plastic pipe and an additive high-strength jacket pipe of
textile reinforced concrete by using the wrapping method. Such textile reinforced
concrete multilayer pipe systems provide effective pipeline systems with low dead
weights.
2. A multi-layer pipe’s wall of an adequate rectlineal pipe section (length = 1) consisting of
i = η strongly coaxial and non-slip orientated circular segments is regarded. The internal
first thin-walled layer (i = 1) primarily serves for fluid transportation. Internal and external
loads which generate mechanical stresses in the wall are predominantly carried by the
textile reinforced concrete layers (i = 2 … η). The in- and outside contour run constantly,
circularly and rotation-symmetrically to the pipe’s longitudinal axis.
3. The carrying behaviour of load capacity and usability is primarily based on elementary
loads which stress the pipe cross section rotation-symmetrically or non-rotation-
symmetrically. They generate a triaxial state of strain and stress in radial, tangential and
axial direction. The loads result from operating conditions and from installation stress
conditions of first type or rather from non-operation residual stress conditions of second
type. A plane strain in consideration of axial-constant load and installation conditions is
postulated. Boundary effects are not included. The material behaviour generally offers a
non-linear character in a “smearing conception“.
4. For determining and describing the wall’s internal state of strain and stress, a series of
experiments and computional analyses are carried out for different loading. Dimensions
and pipe classes have been defined based on selected, standardised diameters.
Mechanical characteristics and section coefficients can be specified using the material
parameters that are identified in preliminary tests.
5. The pipe section divides into circular segments depending on the geometry and material
layering. In any discrete k th load step any i th segment of a j th wall node is characterised as
a quasi-homogeneous, linear elastic element (element height si) whose differential
equations of strain and stress will be sufficiently assuaged and integrated in systems of
equations allowing for boundary and transition conditions. The solution occurs with
developed software modules, for residual stresses, internal/external pressure and
vacuum using the rotation-symmetrical approach, for bending a j th wall node applying the
non-rotation-symmetrical approach in combination of a pipe section’s breaking model and
the carrying load formation.
6. The constants of integration which are included in basis functions are the result of
defined boundary stresses on the pipe’s in- and outside radius or rather of transition
condition (stress, strain) between adjacent layers and elements. The computation of
earth loads on buried pipes occurs as a coupled soil-pipe-system introducing established
modified methods according to LEONHARDT’s shear-resistant beam.
Ulf Helbig – Tragverhalten und Berechnung von mehrschichtigen Verbundrohren
Theses
7. Time-dependent residual stresses appear in the multilayer wall as a result of the plastic
pipe’s extrusion process (P I) and the concrete jacket pipe’s contraction and shrinkage
process (P II). Due to the order of the different processes, a real superposition (P I + P II)
with partial reduction and/or enhancement only takes place in the inner thinwalled plastic
pipe. The textile reinforced concrete jacket exclusively offers contraction and shrinkage
effects.
8. Tangential tensions and radial compression strengths evolve from internal pressure.
Because the innermost concrete layer shows the highest tangential stress in the ultimate
limit of state the textile reinforced concrete jacket tangentially collapses sequentially from
the innermost concrete layer to the outside. A long-term prediction can be done for
pressure pipes using a transient function approach based on endurance-tests.
9. Confined to linear-elastic material behaviour, the concrete jacket pipe can easily handle
external pressures much higher than operating conditions. Neither a collapse, caused by
the rotation symmetric external pressure pa, or a buckling failure is likely. However,
because of the poor adhesive tensile strength between the plastic and the concrete
jacket pipe, a separate consideration of the thin-walled inner plastic pipe is necessary.
10. The bending stress (e.g. on buried pipes) generates an irregular stress along the pipe
circumference. The crown, invert and springline nodes give the locations of the highest
local stresses. Triaxial load tests were performed to determine the pipe stiffness and
deflection shapes under loading. A non-linear earth-load-analysis method has been
utilised to simulate and computationally model the buried pipes. As both impermeability
and small deflections are preserved throughout, the system can be used without concern
up to the limit state. A computation of the load carrying deflection is therefore justified
and a higher effectiveness of the pipe section’s load capacity can be achieved.
