Instrumental (voluntary) control of dysfunctional brain
circuits

Anatomically specific learned modification of dysfunctional brain circuits constitute the
central target of psychiatric treatment. Psychopharmacological agents are hopelessly unspecific
because of the overlap of different neurotransmitters’ action on cell populations.
The only existing possibility to locally change behaviorally relevant brain circuits is operantinstrumental
learning of activity in neuronal circuits or invasive stimulation of these networks.
We describe experimental evidence of non-invasive local network training with operant
conditioning (neurofeedback) of circumscribed brain areas and their connectivity using
real-time fMRI-brain-computer interfaces (BCI) in chronic schizophrenia, criminal psychopathy,
attention deficit disorder, addiction and sexual abuse. Specific effects on behavior
dependent upon the network location can be demonstrated.
