In this respect Stephan Baus, Managing
Director of DEKRA-ITS, forged a link
between the professional and personal
level. Generally binding values are
indispensable for the orientation of
the individual and this is where the
credibility and exemplary behaviour of
executives play a major role. “Only by
knowing what you are doing and why
can you give security to others and thus
create an atmosphere of trust,” explained
Baus, illustrating this with his own life
principle.
Stakeholder value counts
As Hans-Joachim Schneider entered the
stage, presenter Wolf R. Hirschmann
urged the guests to keep a lookout for
role models in the Entrepreneurs’ Forum

concept of sustainability. “Honesty is
the best policy,” Schneider pointed out.
What matters is thus not short-term
profit for the shareholders, but rather
long-term success, for which there is
indeed a magic formula: the path to
total quality management, on which
all “stakeholders” must be led.
How well ethical action can be interlinked
with success was driven home
by Franz-Josef Fischer, whose “smiley”
initiative provides tangible aid to disadvantaged
children in Germany and
other parts of the world. Today, over
50 companies actively participate in
Fischer’s network and in turn profit
from the contacts resulting from their
voluntary work and donations. In 2003
the “Smileys” received an Oscar for
training (see AUDITORIUM 1/2004)
for the successful placement of young
people in secure apprenticeships.
Winning together
“Helping others to be successful – that’s
the best recipe for one’s own success,”
Josef Schmidt summed up his own
maxim. According to the founder of the
Schmidt Colleg, this formed the basis
for the success of his management model
UnternehmerEnergie (“entrepreneurial
energy”). Listening and paying attention
is usually more helpful than giving
advice. Here again, in Kant’s words:
“Man is happier through what he does
than through what he enjoys.”

Fournier, added two further principles
to the philosopher’s categorical imperative.
Besides the utilitarian rule,
“Act to create the greatest possible
benefit”, in particular the transparency
rule is in keeping with the times: “Act as
though it could be common knowledge.”
As a “moral person”, the company
should formulate and defend its ethos
vis-à-vis customers, employees, suppliers,
banks and society in general.
A logical consequence of this demand
was announced by Anuschirawan Adel,
Head of the Certification Body with
DEKRA-ITS: supplementary to the
DEKRA Award, from 2004 onwards
there will be a special DEKRA Ethics
Award for ethical and social management.
After Josef Schmidt and Dr Dr Cay von
Fournier had each received an honorary
award from Klaus Schmidt, Chief
Executive of DEKRA, for their “contribution
to the creation and improvement
of corporate quality with the management
model UnternehmerEnergy”, Prof.
Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Zeidler surprised the
audience with two names in connection
with the eagerly awaited announcement
of the award winner: “The winners of
the DEKRA Award 2003 are Zollner
Elektronik AG and the Police Headquarters
of Gorzów Wielkopolski.
Congratulations!”
