Priority effects in community assembly are known to significantly
affect diversity and productivity of grasslands. The
species that arrive first at a disturbed site play a key role in
the further development of the community. In December
2007 we started a grassland assembly experiment, the Habitat
Garden, with two different grassland habitats (dry vs.
mesic grassland) and initially two different diversity levels.
The experiment is designed to following changes in early
successional grassland systems over time.
The main focus of this presentation is on the dry grassland:
here we sowed mixtures with 2 grass species (and 25
forbs) or 7 grass species (and 32 forbs) and tested whether
priority effects determine diversity and productivity in this
mineral poor system.
Initial results showed that priority effects were occurring in
this dry grassland. The initial diversity affected the trajectory
of the community and the different sowing treatments
developed varying species composition, while species
richness and cover values remained similar. Although the
positive diversity effect on species richness disappeared in
year 2, the experimental plots with 7 grass species kept a
higher total plant cover and biomass production. This effect
levelled out in year 3. It remains to be seen whether the
levelling out of priority effect in years 2 & 3 will be sustained
in year 4 (i.e. 2011) or whether the communities will
become more disparate again. At functional group level
we found quite different results: sowing diversity had no
real effect on the ratio of number of species in a functional
group to total species number, whereas biomass per
functional group between diversity treatments was very
variable.
Our results clearly show that there is a priority effect in the
first years of establishment in early successional dry grassland
systems with different starting diversity, which affects
productivity and diversity.
Durchströmungsmoore waren einst der vorherrschende
Moortyp in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Sie wurden überwiegend
tief entwässert und in intensiv genutzte artenarme
Grünlandflächen überführt. Seit den 1990er Jahren
wurden viele dieser Moorgrünlandflächen aus der Nutzung
genommen und wiedervernässt. Meist entstanden dabei
flach überstaute, nährstoffreiche Röhrichte und Riede.
Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
versuchen wir in unserem Experiment,
im Gegensatz zur bisher vorherrschenden Praxis, die
Vegetation naturnaher, mesotropher Durchströmungsmoore,
d.h. braunmoosreiche Seggenriede, mittels Flachabtorfung
des stark degradierten Oberbodens (ca. 35 – 70 cm)
und der Einbringung von Zielarten (Diasporen, Moosen
und Heu) aus einem naturnahen Referenzgebiet wieder
herzustellen. Dabei werden verschiedenen Feuchtestufen,
Wasserregime sowie Verfahren der Einbringung von
Zielarten verglichen. Nachdem die Experimentalflächen im
November 2010 eingerichtet wurden, werden die Ergebnisse
der ersten Datenerhebung vom April 2011 präsentiert.
