Kapitel in diesem achtzehnstündigen Film
die je nach Etage mit U (für Untergeschoß) /1;
U/2; U/3; U/4; 1/1, 1/2 u.s.w. bezeichnet sind.
Bei der Kamerafahrt wurden die Umgebungsge
is coupled with the hidden commodity, and sets
conscious or unconscious desires free, which
are supposed to be satisfied when the commodity
is purchased. In addition to its physical
extension, each wrapping receives a referential
one as well. The signs and images depicted on
the surface of each product lead you to many
very distinct rooms, which, according to their
profile of the target group, contain the most
diverse promises of happiness. If you count
these rooms, which create these notions and
desire, a department store becomes an infinitely
intricate, again and again interlocking and
folded entity.
»Karstadt« tries to grasp this physically and
referentially likewise fractal-like surface completely,
to unfold it and to transform it into the
temporal linearity of the medium film, in order
to create a mental image of this folded room.
This department store possesses a sales
space of 22 000 square meters, which are
extended over six floors. From the outer limits
of the sales space of each floor, the camera
moves to the middle in spirals. On each floor,
the camera moves along the shelves on four
different levels: just above the ground, at the
height of about a meter, about 2.50 meters over
the ground and just under the ceiling, so that,
with a certain overlap of the recorded area, the
whole height of the rooms is covered . Hence
this 18 hour film is made up of several chapters,
which are named after each floor with U (for the
basement) /1; U/2; U/3; U/4; 1/1; 1/2 etc.
The sounds directly surrounding the camera
were also recorded. For the production of the
master-tapes, this material was later worked
on with a computer in real time. To express it
in simple terms, the principle of the conversion
of sound is based on the fact that certain resonances
are raised, while others are suppressed.
This algorithm was retained for the whole tonematerial.
Because certain acoustic forms (e.g.
roaring, cracking) are very much alienated, this
kind of conversion of sound may be perceived
