CATHERINE CHALMERS
Catherine Chalmer’s artistic practice is intertwined with
long term documentation of habitats and communities
of insects. Working in vivid colors, often against white
backgrounds she generates unique visual qualities
focusing on the beauty of physical qualities of praying
mantises, cockroaches and leafcutter ants. In
her series of photographs and videos she reflects on
humankind’s conception of nature.
LICHTSTROEME Work: We rule
Video projection
Ants inhabit nearly every ecosystem on earth, they
are an influential species in their habitat and they
have an impact on other biological systems. They have
sophisticated communication, advanced agriculture;
they wage war and take slaves. In the video “We rule”
Catherine Chalmers stages the parallels between ants
and humans.
