LOOP.PH
Loop.pH is a design studio founded in 2003 by
Mathias Gmachl and Rachel Wingfield. In their design
practice they link biological principles, digital media,
participatory practice and arts and crafts. They
specialize in the design and fabrication of ephemeral
textile architecture and urban interventions which
account for ecological parameters and principles of
community engagement.
LICHTSTROEME Work: Biostructure
Sculpture
Loop.pH presented a site-specific work, which was a
hand woven structure. Wires were bowed into rings
and intertwined into several dodecahedra that in turn
are joined together to form tubes which are patterned
in curvilinear formations. The flexible bows are attached
in tangency to one another in such a way that
the tendency of arcs to spring outward is symmetrically
restrained by the like tendency of other arcs and
the structure forms and stabilizes itself. The structure
was based on the biological principle of self-similarity
enabling it to work from micro to the macro scale as it
can be seen in the formation of foam bubbles or living
cells.
