Schon lange zählt Zermatt zu den wichtigsten Kulinarik-Hotspots im Wallis.
Wenn es um hochstehenden Genuss geht, kommen Feinschmeckerinnen
und Feinschmecker zuhinterst im Mattertal voll auf ihre Kosten.

Rösti, Raclette oder Älplermagronen – daran dürften viele
denken, wenn sie an die Kulinarik in einem Bergdorf
denken. Dazu gemütliche Stuben mit rot-weiss-karierten
Vorhängen, Holzschnitzereien und einem Kaminfeuer.
Solch urchige Stuben gibt es in Zermatt zuhauf. Doch kulinarisch
hat Zermatt mehr als die gute Schweizer Küche zu
bieten. Kulinarische Weltreisen sind möglich. Von japanisch
über klassisch französisch bis hin zu mexikanisch, die Vielfalt
ist schier unendlich.
In keinem anderen Ferienort in der Schweiz ist die Dichte
an Gault-Millau-Restaurants so hoch wie in Zermatt. Exzellent
speisen kann man auch in den Zermatter Bergrestaurants.
Wer dort nur einfache Kost für müde Skifans und
Wanderfreudige erwartet, wird überrascht sein. Auch dort
oben ist das Niveau hoch.
Das Fundament dieser ausgezeichneten, fulminanten Küchen
in Zermatt bilden neben viel Kreativität und Können
natürlich die saisonalen, regionalen und frischen Produkte,
mit denen gearbeitet wird. Etwa mit jenen aus der
«Horu-Käserei». Die Tradition des Käsens in Zermatt ist
so alt wie die Alpwirtschaft am Fuss des Matterhorns. In
der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde jedoch dieser
Wirtschaftszweig Opfer der Zentralisierungen in der
Milchindustrie, und 1950 stellte die letzte Zermatter Käserei
ihren Betrieb ein. Mirjam und Reto Gobba-Wyrsch
erweckten 2003 mit ihrer «Horu-Käserei» die Käserei-Tradition
wieder zu neuem Leben. Mit sieben Kühen fing alles
an. Heute verarbeitet der Familienbetrieb bis zu 500 Liter
Milch am Tag. Spektakulär, aromatisch, kreativ, puristisch,
bodenständig, anders: Die Vielfalt der Restaurants in Zermatt
ist wahrlich gross. Die Besucherinnen und Besucher
können so jeden Tag der Woche kulinarische Welt- und Geschmacksreisen
erleben.
Und wie bringt man die Zermatter Spitzen-Gastronominnen-
und -Gastronomen zusammen und beschert so
den internationalen Foodies ein besonderes Erlebnis? Mit
einem Food Festival. Dank der Unterstützung und Zusammenarbeit
mit 21 ausgezeichneten Gault-Millau-Restaurants
und Hotels konnte das erste Swiss Food Festival im
August 2011 durchgeführt werden. 2018 wurde aus dem
Swiss Food Festival das «Taste of Zermatt». Damit werden
alle Zermatter Kulinarik-Events unter einem Dach vereint.
Zu diesen Events zählt etwa die Kitchen-Party. Diese bringt
20 Zermatter Spitzenköchinnen und Spitzenköche, die insgesamt
298 Gault-Millau-Punkte innehaben, zusammen
zum Kochen. Es wird hier nicht gekleckert, sondern mit
der ganz grossen Kelle angerührt. An 20 Stationen werden
Köstlichkeiten vor den Augen der Besucher zubereitet.
Wer es sportlich mag, der sollte das «Horugüet Bike» nicht
verpassen. Die geführte E-Bike-Tour ist perfekt für alle
bewegungsfreudigen Gourmets. Gemütlicher geht’s beim
«Horugüet Hike» zu und her. Hier ist das Motto: Schlemmen
und wandern und dabei stets den Blick aufs Matterhorn geniessen.
Das «Horugüet» wird auch im Winter durchgeführt.
Wer ein Käsefondue hoch in den Lüften geniessen will,
dem sei das «Fondue am Seil» empfohlen. Aber auch für
Frühaufsteherinnen und Höhenflieger gibt es ein Angebot:
das «Gondelfrühstück».
Bei «Taste of Zermatt» ist für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei.
Zermatt hat also definitiv mehr zu bieten als nur die Aussicht
auf das Matterhorn. Man kann mit Blick auf den Berg
der Berge noch sensationell essen.

Zermatt has long been classified as one of the most prominent culinary
hotspots in Valais. Right at the very back of the Matter Valley, food
enthusiasts can get their money’s worth by indulging in some of the
high-calibre cuisine that the mountain village has to offer.
Rösti, Raclette or Älplermagronen (macaroni
and potatoes with cheese) are the culinary
specialities you are likely to imagine
are plated up in a Swiss alpine village. Not
to mention the cosy taverns draped with red
and white checked curtains, wood carvings
and a blazing fire. Zermatt has plenty of
rustic taverns like this, but it has way more
to offer than just simply good Swiss cuisine.
Here, you can travel around the culinary
world. From Japanese to classic French or
even Mexican cuisine, the choice is endless.
There aren’t as many Gault-Millau restaurants
in any other Swiss holiday destination
as you will find in Zermatt. You can even
enjoy exquisite dining in one of Zermatt’s
many mountain restaurants. So, if you’re
only expecting to find basic dishes catering
to tired skiers and hiking enthusiasts, then
think again! Prepare to be pleasantly surprised
as when it comes to food, Zermatt
certainly sets the bar high.
The key to Zermatt’s sensational and delectable
cuisine is, of course, it’s use of seasonal,
regional, and fresh produce alongside
the ingenious creativity and skill which finetunes
each dish. An example of where you’d
be met with such delights is at the cheese
dairy "Horu-Käserei". Zermatt’s cheese
tradition is as old as the alpine agriculture
at the foot of the Matterhorn. However,
in the second half of the 20 th century, this
branch of the economy became a victim of
centralisation in the dairy industry, and in
1950, the last Zermatt cheese dairy ceased
operations. In 2003, Mirjam and Reto
Gobba-Wyrsch revived the cheese making
tradition with their "Horu-Käserei". It all
started with seven cows. Today the family
business produces up to 500 litres of milk
per day.
Sensational, aromatic, creative, pure, locally
sourced, and different: the variety of
restaurants in Zermatt is truly spectacular.
Visitors can enjoy a taste of a different
country each day of the week.
And how do you bring Zermatt’s top caterers
together and give international foodies
an extraordinary experience? With a food
festival. Thanks to the support and cooperation
of 21 excellent Gault-Millau restaurants
and hotels, the first Swiss Food Festival
took place in August 2011. In 2018, the
Swiss Food Festival became the "Taste of
Zermatt", bringing together all of Zermatt’s
culinary events under one roof.
One of these events is the Kitchen Party,
which brings together the top 20 chefs of
Zermatt, who hold a total of 298 Gault-Millau
points, to cook together. At this event, it
can get pretty hot in the kitchen as the chefs
all prepare various delicacies in front of the
festival-goers across 20 different stations.
Those who like it sporty can’t miss the
"Horugüet Bike". This guided e-bike tour
is perfect for foodies who like being on the
move. Or, if you’re after a more leisurely affair
then the "Horugüet Hike" is the one for
you. It goes by the motto "Munch and meander
whilst marvelling at the Matterhorn."
The "Horugüet" also takes place in winter.
For those who fancy enjoying a cheese fondue
high in the skies, then the "Gondola
Fondue" is for you. For early birds and
high-flyers there is also the option to enjoy
the "Gondola Breakfast". At the "Taste of
Zermatt" there’s something to whet every
appetite. It is fair to say that Zermatt has way
more to offer, than just it’s magnificent views
of the Matterhorn. Enjoy a sensational meal
whilst marvelling at the mountain views.

AU PIED DU CERVIN
Zermatt fait depuis longtemps partie des hauts lieux de la gastronomie
du Valais. La vallée sait en effet combler les attentes des amatrices et
amateurs de bonne chère.
Rösti, raclette ou macaronis de l’armailli: tels sont, pour de
nombreuses personnes, les dignes représentants de la gastronomie
d’un village de montagne. Viennent s’y ajouter les
salles de restaurant cosy aux rideaux à carreaux rouges et
blancs, les sculptures en bois et le feu de cheminée. Si les
restaurants de ce type ne manquent pas à Zermatt, le village
a toutefois bien plus à offrir que de la bonne cuisine suisse.
On peut même y faire un tour du monde culinaire. Des mets
japonais aux spécialités mexicaines, en passant par la cuisine
traditionnelle française, la variété est presque infinie.
Aucune autre destination de vacances en Suisse ne compte
autant de restaurants Gault et Millau que Zermatt. Ses restaurants
de montagne sont eux aussi excellents, et ont de
quoi surprendre ceux qui s’attendent à des plats simples
pour les skieurs fatigués et les randonneurs. Là-haut aussi,
le niveau est élevé.
Outre une bonne dose de créativité et de savoir-faire, la gastronomie
d’exception de Zermatt ne serait rien sans les produits
frais, régionaux et de saison qui la constituent. Ceux
de la fromagerie Horu, par exemple. À Zermatt, la tradition
fromagère est aussi ancienne que l’économie alpestre
au pied du Cervin. Pourtant, durant la seconde moitié du
XX e siècle, ce secteur d’activité fut victime de la centralisation
de l’industrie laitière: la dernière fromagerie zermattoise
ferma ses portes en 1950. Depuis 2003, Mirjam et Reto
Gobba-Wyrsch ont redonné vie à la tradition avec la fromagerie
Horu. L’entreprise familiale, qui a débuté avec sept vaches,
transforme désormais jusqu’à 500 litres de lait par jour.
Spectaculaires, aromatiques, créatifs, puristes, classiques ou
alternatifs: à Zermatt la variété des restaurants est immense.
Chaque jour de la semaine, les touristes peuvent entreprendre
un voyage gustatif ou culinaire autour du monde.
Mais comment réunit-on les plus grands restaurateurs et
restauratrices zermattois afin d’offrir une expérience particulière
aux foodies du monde entier? En organisant un festival
culinaire, bien sûr. Le premier Swiss Food Festival a
eu lieu en août 2011, grâce au soutien et à la collaboration
de 21 hôtels et restaurants Gault et Millau de renom. En
2018, le Swiss Food Festival est devenu le «Taste of Zermatt».
L’idée est de rassembler sous un seul toit tous les
évènements culinaires zermattois.
Parmi ces évènements figure la Kitchen Party, qui invite
20 stars zermattoises de la cuisine totalisant 298 points
Gault et Millau à cuisiner ensemble. Ici, pas question de
lésiner, il faut mettre les petits plats dans les grands. De
délicieux mets sont préparés sous les yeux du public, sur
20 stands.
Les fans de sport ne sont pas en reste: le «Horugüet Bike»,
un tour guidé en vélo électrique, est parfait pour les gourmets
qui aiment bouger. On appréciera également sa version
plus douce, le «Horugüet Hike», dont le mot d’ordre
est simple: se régaler et randonner, tout en profitant de la
vue sur le Cervin. À noter que le «Horugüet» a également
lieu en hiver.
Pour déguster une fondue au fromage dans les airs, rien
de tel que la «Fondue câblée». Enfin, les lève-tôt et les personnes
aimant l’altitude pourront profiter d’un «Petit-déjeuner
en télécabine».
Avec le «Taste of Zermatt», il y en a pour tous les goûts.
Zermatt a donc bien plus à offrir qu’une vue sur le Cervin:
on peut également y savourer d’excellents repas en observant
la montagne des montagnes.

Das Zermatter Folklore-Festival zelebriert Traditionen mit allem,
was dazugehört: Musik, Trachten, Tänze und bunte Kostüme
zieren im August das Dorf. Nun soll es länger werden – und
seine Teilnehmenden auch in die Berge tragen.

Es ist, als habe jemand die Zeit zurückgedreht. Eine bunte
Tracht überstrahlt die nächste, als der Umzug durch das
Dorf zieht. Auf eine Gruppe prächtig gekleideter Frauen
folgt eine Musiktruppe, hinter ihnen stolzieren Bergführer,
in Ausrüstungen, die noch vor einem halben Jahrhundert
dem Gang «z Bärg» dienten. Die Leute jützen, jubeln, lachen.
Nostalgie pur, inmitten der fantastischen Kulisse des
Nikolaitals. «Das hat mich schon als Mädchen sehr begeistert»,
schwärmt Bianca Ballmann.
Ballmann spricht vom Zermatter Folklore-Festival, welches
jährlich am zweiten Augustwochenende stattfindet. Es feiert
die Zermatterinnen und Zermatter, die Walliserinnen und
Walliser und Schweizer Traditionen in ihrer reinsten Form
– und verwandelt Zermatt in eine bunte Kulisse der Trachten,
Tänze und Musik. Highlight ist der Umzug durch Zermatt,
an welchem rund 1200 Teilnehmende aus der ganzen
Schweiz in das Bergdorf schwärmen. Das Festival geht bald
in seine 53. Ausgabe. 1969 im kleinen Rahmen lanciert,
begann es als beschauliches Treffen, bei welchem das Beisammensein
im Vordergrund stand. Mit der Zeit kam Neues
dazu: mehr Musik, Gefolgsleute, Rahmenprogramm. «Die
Gemeinschaft steht aber weiterhin im Zentrum», sagt Bianca
Ballmann.
Ballmann ist seit 2019 Präsidentin des Organisationskomitees
des Folklore-Festivals. Wäre die Covid-Pandemie nicht
gewesen, wäre die neue Ausgabe ihre fünfte. So ist es die
dritte. Als langjähriges Mitglied des Tambouren- und Pfeifervereins
Zermatt ist Ballmann selbst eingefleischte Teilnehmerin
des Festivals. Sie kennt die Umzüge seit ihrer
Kindheit und ist neben der Musik auch in der Feuerwehr
aktiv. Und sie leitet die Jugendarbeitsstelle Mattertal. Auch
deshalb begleitet sie das Festival schon länger. Denn: Der
Erlös aus der Festwirtschaft fliesst in den Jugendfonds der
Gemeinde Zermatt. Jeder Franken unterstützt damit die Vereine
im Dorf. Im Sommer 2022 konnte der Festival-Umzug
nach zwei Jahren Pandemie erstmals wieder durch das Dorf

ziehen. Allerdings mit einigen Neuerungen. So fanden die
Umzüge und Auftritte bisher jeweils am Sonntagnachmittag
statt. Nun wurde der Umzug auf den Samstagnachmittag
verlegt. Nicht für alle ist das von Vorteil: Das lokale Gewerbe
muss während der eineinhalb Stunden des Umzugs mit
den Sperrungen der Hauptstrassen zurechtkommen. «Doch
wir sind froh, im Dorf auf so viel Verständnis zu stossen», so
Ballmann.
Am Sonntag gibt es zudem Auftritte an ungewöhnlichen
Standorten. Die Gruppen wurden auf verschiedene Bergrestaurants
verteilt. Dort beglückten sie die Gäste mit urchigen
Klängen und Gesang. «Ziel war, auch den Berggästen
ein Folklore-Feeling näherzubringen», so Ballmann. Auch
für die teilnehmenden Gruppen sei es ein gemütlicher Ausklang.
Man könne so das Wochenende noch etwas geniessen.
Und die eindrückliche Landschaft auf sich wirken lassen.
Neu gibt es auch einen ausgedruckten Festführer für alle.
Er enthält die wichtigsten Angaben zum Festival, informiert
aber auch zur Dorfgeschichte. Auch Einheimische sollen so
etwas aus dem Büchlein mitnehmen können. «Auch Einheimische
wissen vieles über unsere Geschichte noch nicht»,
erklärt Ballmann.
Schliesslich werden die Gruppen für den Umzug seit der 52.
Ausgabe schon am Freitagabend zu einem Racletteplausch
mit Tombola eingeladen. «Viele Gruppen reisen gerne einen
Tag früher an», so Ballmann. Das erlaube einen gelungenen
Einstieg in das Wochenende. Ziel der Neuerungen sei
insgesamt, das Festival-Wochenende zu verlängern. Für die
auswärtigen Gruppen, welche eine längere Anreise hinter
sich haben, lohne sich dies besonders, so Ballmann. Das
Feedback fiel entsprechend positiv aus. Die Gruppen blieben
länger im Dorf und schätzten den neuen Rahmen. Mit
Vorteilen für die touristische Destination, sagt Ballmann. So
könne man zum Beispiel das Mittagsgeschäft gut einbinden
– die Leute müssten ja verpflegt werden. Das Festival soll
in Zukunft auch mehr Touristinnen und Touristen ansprechen.
Bisher besuchen diese vor allem den Umzug, während
das Festgelände mehrheitlich von Einheimischen bevölkert
wird. «Man trifft sich dort», so Ballmann. «Alle aus dem
Dorf finden sich irgendwo ein.»
Wachsen soll das Fest aber nicht. Ballmann sagt: «Wir wollen
in diesem traditionellen Rahmen bleiben.» Es müsse
nicht alles immer grösser werden, findet sie. Das Festival
sei deshalb so schön, weil man die Leute wieder sehe. Denn
im Kern der bunten Trachten und altbekannten Melodien
zeichnet sich das Zermatter Folklore-Festival vor allem
durch eines aus: die Gemeinschaft, die daraus entsteht.

The Zermatt Folklore Festival pulls out all the stops when it comes
to celebrating its traditions. Every August, the village is brimming
with music, dancing, traditional clothes and colourful costumes.
The festival has now even been extended so that its participants
can also enjoy what the mountains have to offer.
Step back in time and witness this lively celebration
of Swiss culture. One colourful costume outshines
the next, as the festival parade snakes its way
through the mountain village. A group of women
dressed in magnificent traditional clothing, followed
by a music troupe, with mountain guides
strutting behind them wearing the outfits that
served the mountain climbers half a century ago.
People laugh, cheer and celebrate. Pure nostalgia
nestled in amongst the breathtaking scenery of
the Nikolaital Valley. "Ever since I was a little girl,
I have always been excited about this," exclaimed
Bianca Ballmann.
Ballmann speaks about the Zermatt Folkore Festival,
which takes place every year on the second
weekend in August. It celebrates the Zermatt, Valaisan
and Swiss traditions in their purest forms
and transforms Zermatt into a colourful backdrop
of traditional costumes, dances and music. The
highlight is the parade through Zermatt, for which
around 1,200 participants from all over Switzerland
swarm to the mountain village.
The festival is soon to enter into its 53 rd edition.
It started on a much smaller scale back in 1969,
initially just as a low-key meet-up, as a chance for
everyone to get together. Over time, new things
were added: more music, more visitors and a fuller
social programme. "But community still remains
the central focus," says Bianca Ballmann.
Since 2019, Ballmann has acted as the president
of the Folklore Festival’s organisation committee.
Had it not been for the covid pandemic, it would
have been her fifth edition. However, it is currently
her third.
As a long-time member of Zermatt’s Pipers and
Drummers club, Ballmann herself is a diehard participant
in the festival; from attending the parades
since childhood, being actively involved with the
music part of the festival, to also being part of the
fire brigade. She also runs the Matter Valley youth
work centre. Which is another reason why she has
been so deeply involved with the festival, as it’s
food and beverage proceeds go towards Zermatt’s
youth fund. Every penny helps to support the village
associations.
In summer 2022, the festival parade made its
way through the village for the first time after two
years of the pandemic – this time with a few new

additions. So far, the parades and performances
have always taken place on Sunday afternoons.
However, the parade has now been moved to a Saturday
afternoon. Although this isn’t everyone’s cup
of tea, as local businesses had to persevere with the
closures of the main roads during the 1.5 hours of
the parade. "But we are so glad, as the village is so
understanding," says Ballmann.
On Sunday, performances will now take place in
alternative locations. The groups will be distributed
across many different mountain restaurants, where
guests can delight in their rustic sounds and singing.
"The goal was to also bring a folklore feeling
closer to the mountain guests," says Ballmann. It
also means that participants can enjoy the end of
their weekend and appreciate the impressive landscapes
that surround the venues.
A printed festival guide is now available to everyone.
It includes the most important highlights of
the festival, as well as information about the history
of the village. It should also allow the locals to learn
something, as "many locals still don’t know very
much about our history," explained Ballmann.
The final new addition, added since the 52 nd festival,
is that the groups who arrive for the parade are
invited to a raclette party with a raffle on the Friday
evening. "Many groups like to arrive a day early,"
says Ballmann. This allows for a pleasant start to
the weekend.
According to Ballmann, the overall aim of these
new additions is to extend the festival weekend,
particularly for those groups from outside the
country who have travelled a long way to get here.
The feedback so far has been extremely positive.
The groups stayed longer in the village and had
time to appreciate the new programme. Ballman
also said that it’s been advantageous in a tourism
point of view. For example, it’s a good way to increase
lunchtime business, as people have always
got to eat.
In future it would be good for the festival to appeal
to more tourists. At the moment, they mainly just
attend the parade, whilst the locals populate the
festival area. "It’s a place where people meet", says
Ballmann. "There’s somewhere to go for everyone
in the village."
But the festival is not supposed to grow. Ballmann
says "we want to keep within the traditional programme."
She doesn’t think it needs to keep getting
bigger. One of the festival’s greatest charms is
that it affords people the opportunity to meet up
time and time again. At the core of the colourful
traditional costumes and old familiar melodies, the
Zermatt Folklore Festival is characterised by one
thing above all: the community that emerges from
it.

Le festival de folklore de Zermatt célèbre les traditions dans
toute leur splendeur. En août, la musique, les costumes et les
danses folkloriques magnifient le village. Désormais sa durée
doit être étendue et porter ses participants en altitude.
C’est comme si quelqu’un avait remonté le temps.
Plus belles les unes que les autres, les tenues folkloriques
rivalisent de couleurs alors que le cortège
défile à travers le village. Un groupe de femmes
vêtues de magnifiques atours ouvre la marche.
Des musiciens leur enjambent le pas, suivis par
de fiers guides, équipés comme ils l’étaient il y a
encore un demi-siècle quand ils partaient à l’assaut
des montagnes. Les gens acclament, rigolent
et iodlent. De la nostalgie à l’état pur au cœur
des fantastiques coulisses de la vallée de Saint-
Nicolas. «J’adorais déjà ça quand j’étais une petite
fille», s’enthousiasme Bianca Ballmann.
Elle évoque ainsi le festival folklorique de Zermatt
qui se tient chaque année le deuxième weekend
du mois d’août. Les traditions de Zermatt,
du Valais et de Suisse sont à l’honneur dans leur
forme la plus pure et transforment le village de
Zermatt en une scène colorée rassemblant costumes,
danses et musique folkloriques. Le point
d’orgue est le cortège à travers Zermatt, constitué
de quelque 1200 participants venus de toute la
Suisse.
Le festival célébrera bientôt sa 53 e édition. Lancé
en 1969 dans un format plus confidentiel, le festival
a d’abord été une paisible rencontre où la
convivialité tenait le premier rôle. Avec le temps,
le programme s’est étoffé: plus de musique, plus
de gens et un programme-cadre. «Mais c’est la
communauté qui prime», explique Bianca Ballmann
qui préside le comité d’organisation du
festival de folklore depuis 2019. Sans la pandémie
du covid, cette nouvelle édition aurait été sa
cinquième. Les choses étant ce qu’elles sont, ce
sera donc sa troisième.
En tant que membre de longue date de l’association
des tambours et des fifres de Zermatt,
Bianca Ballmann est une participante invétérée
du festival. Elle connaît les cortèges depuis son
enfance et est également active au sein des sapeurs-pompiers.
Et elle dirige le service du travail
auprès de la jeunesse de la vallée de la Matter.
C’est la raison pour laquelle elle accompagne le
festival déjà depuis un certain temps. En effet, les
recettes des boissons et des repas vendus dans
le cadre du festival sont versées au fonds pour
la jeunesse de la commune de Zermatt. Chaque
franc est donc un soutien financier en faveur des
associations du village.
Durant l’été 2022, le cortège, après deux ans
de pandémie, a enfin de nouveau pu traverser
le village. Toutefois avec quelques nouveautés
au programme. Jusqu’à présent, les cortèges
et les représentations avaient lieu le dimanche
après-midi. En 2022, le cortège a été avancé au
samedi après-midi, ce qui n’est pas un avantage
pour tout le monde. En effet, les commerces locaux
doivent s’arranger avec la fermeture des rues
principales pendant les 90 minutes du cortège.
«Nous sommes contents que les gens du village
se montrent très compréhensifs», relate Bianca
Ballmann.

Et le dimanche, les représentations sont organisées
dans des lieux insolites. Les groupes ont été
répartis dans différents restaurants d’altitude. Là,
ils font le bonheur des hôtes avec leurs tonalités
et chants teintés de couleur locale. «Le but était
que les visiteurs fassent également l’expérience
de cette ambiance folklorique en montagne», explique
Bianca Ballmann. Pour les groupes, c’est
aussi une belle façon de terminer leur participation.
Ils peuvent encore un peu profiter du weekend.
Et laisser l’impressionnant paysage faire son
effet.
En nouveauté, il existe également un guide des
festivités imprimé. Il contient les informations
principales sur le festival et dévoile également
l’histoire du village. Ainsi, la brochure est également
d’intérêt pour les autochtones. «En effet,
rares sont les locaux qui connaissent déjà tout de
notre histoire», explique la présidente du festival.
Et puis, depuis la 52 e édition, les groupes du cortège
sont invités à une soirée raclette et tombola
le vendredi soir déjà. «Il y a beaucoup de groupes
qui aiment arriver un jour à l’avance», confie la
présidente. Ça permet de bien démarrer le weekend.
Le but des nouveautés est de prolonger la durée
du festival. Pour les groupes qui viennent de loin,
c’est vraiment appréciable, selon Bianca Ballmann.
D’ailleurs, les retours ont été très positifs
à ce sujet. Les groupes sont restés plus longtemps
au village et apprécient le nouveau cadre. Ce qui a
des avantages pour la destination touristique, dit
l’organisatrice. Ainsi, on peut ajouter les revenus
de midi puisqu’il faut bien que les gens mangent.
Le festival doit aussi s’adresser à un plus grand
nombre de touristes à l’avenir. Jusqu’à présent, ils
venaient surtout pour le cortège, alors que le site
consacré à la restauration était fréquenté par les
locaux. «Un point de ralliement», indique Bianca
Ballmann. «Chacun du village va se retrouver à
l’un ou l’autre endroit.»
Mais le festival ne doit pas changer de dimension.
Bianca Ballmann dit: «Nous voulons garder ce
cadre traditionnel.» Il n’est pas toujours nécessaire
que tout grandisse, trouve-t-elle. Le festival
tire sa qualité du fait que les gens se rencontrent
à nouveau. Car au milieu des costumes colorés et
des mélodies nostalgiques, le festival folklorique
de Zermatt se distingue surtout par le sentiment
communautaire qu’il fait naître.

PIRMIN ZURBRIGGEN,
WÜRDEN SIE DIE
WELTCUP-ABFAHRT
AM MATTERHORN
GEWINNEN?
Das grenzt fast an ein Wunder: Innert Kürze haben Zermatt und
Cervinia vier Weltcup-Skirennen auf die Beine gestellt, die 2023
erstmals zur Austragung gelangen werden. Ihr Botschafter ist der
legendäre Walliser Abfahrts-Olympiasieger.
Alles war angerichtet für die Abfahrtsrennen auf über 3000
m ü.M. mit Start in der Schweiz und Ziel in Italien – zwei
für die Männer und zwei für die Frauen. Damit soll neu im
Herbst jeweils die Weltcup-Speedsaison eröffnet werden. Das
Budget von insgesamt 6,7 Millionen Franken war gedeckt,
die Sponsoren wie Hugo Boss, Sunrise, Ochsner Sport und
BKW an Bord, und auch die Einnahmen waren versichert.
Allein es fehlte der Schnee, die Premiere musste abgesagt
werden. Der Oktober 2022 wird denn auch als bislang
wärmster in die Geschichte eingehen, seit es Messungen
gibt. Rennpräsident Franz Julen dazu: «Die Natur ist immer
stärker. Doch wir sind Bergleute, wir geben nicht auf. Unser
Projekt ist nicht in Gefahr.»
Und so wird es im Spätherbst 2023 auf der Gran Becca, wie
die Strecke heisst, zur grossen Neuheit kommen. Gran Becca
kann mit grosser Berg übersetzt werden. Es handelt sich
hierbei um den alten Namen des Matterhorns. In der franko-provenzalischen
Umgangssprache in der benachbarten
Region Valtournenche wird der Berg noch heute so genannt.
Das «Zermatt Magazin» hat sich schon jetzt mit der Skilegende
Pirmin Zurbriggen unterhalten, der auf seinem
Höhepunkt 1988 in Calgary Abfahrts-Olympiasieger wurde.
Zurbriggen ist Botschafter der Zermatter Skirennen. Ihn
verbindet mit dem Rennpräsidenten nicht nur eine spannende
Zukunft, sondern auch eine besondere Vergangenheit.
Pirmin Zurbriggen, Sie sind Botschafter des Matterhorn
Cervino Speed Opening. Was macht ein Botschafter von
Weltcuprennen eigentlich?
Franz Julen wollte, dass ich einen Part spielen würde, und
fragte mich, was ich mir vorstellen könne. Ich wollte nicht in
der Organisation mitmachen, ich hatte genug gemacht für
den Sport. Jetzt sollen junge Leute ran. Aber ich war gerne
bereit, sonst wie zu helfen. An einer Medienkonferenz stellte
er mich dann als Botschafter vor. Dort hörte ich das Wort
zum ersten Mal. (lacht)
Und was machen Sie jetzt?
Sofort nachdem bekannt wurde, dass Zermatt Weltcuprennen
durchführen will, erhielt ich immer wieder Anfragen
von Journalistinnen und Journalisten aus aller Welt.
Mehr, als ich gedacht hatte. Da ergab es sich, dass ich kraft
meines Namens und meiner Geschichte oft mit Medien
zu tun habe. Ich bin aber sicher nicht der Medienverantwortliche.
Kann man die Gran Becca mit einer anderen Abfahrt
im Weltcup vergleichen?
Nein, denn jedes Gelände hat seine eigene Geometrie und
Umgebung, die wiederum Auswirkungen auf die Einstrahlung
des Lichtes hat. Was hier in dieser Höhe einmalig ist,

ist das Fehlen von Orientierungspunkten in der Natur, vom
Entlangfahren am Felsen nach Plateau Rosa einmal abgesehen.
Das kann zu einer Herausforderung werden. In einer
Waldpassage beispielsweise fühlt man sich auf einer Abfahrt
geborgener, sicherer. Hier oben hingegen fehlt dieses Empfinden.
Im offenen Feld ist auch das Licht anders. Und der
Umgang damit ist folglich schwieriger.
Und nicht jede Abfahrerin oder jeder Abfahrer
kann damit gleich umgehen?
Die Unterschiede können sogar ganz stark sein. Es gab in
meiner Karriere immer wieder Gegner, die richtiggehend
explodiert sind, sobald die Sonne rauskam. Andere wiederum
blockierten sich, wenn sie verschwand. Ich kann mir
sogar vorstellen, dass hier oben jemand gewinnen wird, den
man nicht auf der Rechnung hat. Ganz einfach, weil es eine
eigene Abfahrt ist, die einen eigenen Fahrstil entwickelt.
Und zwar einen sehr feinen, dezenten und enorm kompakten.
Dieser Fahrstil wird hier gefragter sein als üblich.
Sie und Rennpräsident Franz Julen verbindet sehr viel, er
hatte beispielsweise Sportbücher über Sie geschrieben.
Bereits als Sie ein junger Skirennfahrer waren, kamen
Sie beide in Kontakt. Wie war das?
Sein Bruder Max Julen ist zwei Jahre älter als ich. Als
Franz Julen «frisch» den Führerausweis hatte, fuhr er seinen
Bruder in ein Trainingslager nach Graubünden, dabei
sass ich auf dem Rücksitz. Ich war gerade mal 14. Danach
gab es unzählige gemeinsame Fahrten vom Oberwallis aus,
denn Franz war Servicemann, Manager und auch eine
Art Mental trainer seines Bruders, der 1984 Riesenslalom-
Olympia sieger wurde. So rückte ich der Familie Julen immer
näher.
War er mehr als Chauffeur für Sie?
Einmal war ich im Europacup ohne Servicemann, er half
mir das erste Mal aus und bereitete meine Ski vor. Ich gewann
ein Rennen und wurde im anderen Dritter. Da spürte
ich, dass ich ihm vertrauen kann. Wir haben viele Hochs
und Tiefs gemeinsam durchgemacht. Auch später, als unsere
Wege sich getrennt hatten, riefen wir uns gegenseitig an,
um die Meinung des anderen zu hören.
Hätte der Aktiv-Abfahrer Pirmin Zurbriggen auf
einer Strecke wie der Gran Becca gewinnen können?
Das wäre ein ganz schwieriger Kampf geworden für mich.
Die Gran Becca ist nicht auf meine Fähigkeiten zugeschnitten.
Ich hatte es in meiner Karriere am liebsten von oben bis
unten absolut steil gehabt. Für einen Sieg hier in Zermatt
fehlten mir wohl ein paar Kilogramm Gewicht.
Weshalb sagte Ihnen das steile Gelände derart zu?
Ich fuhr auch viele technische Disziplinen, und wenn man
auch Slalom fährt, hat man im Speed die Tendenz zu extremen,
radikalen Bewegungen, was beispielsweise die Kurvenwinkel
betrifft. Ein Techniker fährt die Kurven gröber und
härter an, während ein reiner Abfahrer sie eher anrutscht.
Ich hatte vom Körperlichen und vom Stil her immer eine
sehr direkte Sprachform. Wenns steil abwärtsgeht, ist diese
Konsequenz umso wichtiger. Sie ist, wenn Sie so wollen, das
Gegenteil von Zögerlichkeit. Bei mir hingegen gab es keine
Zweifel. Ich verlöre auf den flacheren Passagen der Gran Becca
Zeit, da bin ich mir fast sicher. Was die Abfahrerinnen und
Abfahrer im Herbst 2023 mit dieser ziemlich kompletten Abfahrt
aber anrichten werden, bleibt für mich spannend. Ich
jedenfalls bin auf Nadeln, wie es rauskommen wird.

SKI RACE ON THE
MATTERHORN?
It verges on a miracle: in such a short time frame, Zermatt and Cervinia are
hosting four World Cup ski races that will be held for the first time in 2023.
Their ambassador is the legendary Olympic Downhill champion from Valais.

Everything was set for the Downhill event at over
3000 metres above sea level – starting in Switzerland
and finishing in Italy – two races for the men
and two for the women. This event is designed
to open the World Cup season for the speed disciplines
every autumn. The budget totalling 6.7
million Swiss francs was covered, sponsors such as
Hugo Boss, Sunrise, Ochsner Sport and BKW were
on board, and the revenue was also ensured.
All that was missing was the snow, which was why
the premiere of this event had to be cancelled. October
2022 will go down in history as the warmest
October on record. Race President Franz Julen
commented: "Nature is always stronger. But we are
mountain folk, and we do not give up. Our project
is not in jeopardy."
And so the Gran Becca, as the run is called, will
host this major premiere in late autumn of 2023.
Gran Becca means big mountain. It is also the old
name of the Matterhorn. The French provincial dialect
in the neighbouring region of Valtournenche
still calls the mountain by this name today.
Zermatt Magazine has already talked to skiing legend
Pirmin Zurbriggen, who at the peak of his career
won the Downhill at the Olympics in Calgary
in 1988. Zurbriggen is an ambassador for the Zermatt
ski races. He not only shares an exciting future
with the race president, but also an interesting past.
Pirmin Zurbriggen, you are an ambassador for
the Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening. What
does a World Cup race ambassador actually do?
Franz Julen wanted me to be involved and asked
me what I could imagine doing. I didn’t want to be
one of the organisers because I have done enough
of that for the sport already. Younger people can do
that. But I was happy to help in any other way. At
a media conference, he then introduced me as an
ambassador. That was when I heard the word for
the first time (laughs).
So what do you do now?
As soon as it became known that Zermatt wanted
to hold World Cup races, I was constantly contacted
by journalists from all over the world. More
than I would have expected. As it happens, due to
my name and my career, I am often involved with
the media. But I’m certainly not in charge of media
relations.
Can the Gran Becca be compared to any
other Downhill run in the World Cup?
No, because every location has its own topography
and surroundings, which in turn affects the light.

What is unique at this altitude is the lack of natural
landmarks along the run, apart from when you ski
along the rock face past Plateau Rosa. This can be
a challenge. Skiing down a run through the forest,
for example, makes you feel safer and more confident
on the descent. Up here, however, this feeling
is missing. Out in the open, the light is also different.
And it is more difficult to deal with.
And not every Downhill athlete copes with it
in the same way?
There can be some major differences. During my
career, there were always some opponents who
really excelled as soon as the sun came out. Others
slowed down when the sun disappeared. I can
imagine someone winning on this course who you
weren’t counting on. Simply because it is a Downhill
that demands a specific skiing style. You need
very precise, controlled and extremely tight skiing
skills. These characteristics will be more in demand
here than usual.
You have a lot in common with Franz Julen, the
race president; he has written books about you,
for example. The two of you first met when you
were a young ski athlete. How did that come
about?
His brother Max Julen is two years older than me.
When Franz had just passed his driving test, he
drove his brother to a training camp in the Grisons,
with me sitting in the back seat. I was just 14. After
that, there were countless trips together from
the Upper Valais, because Franz was a serviceman,
manager and also a kind of mental coach for his

brother, who went on to win the Giant Slalom at the Olympics
in 1984. That is how I grew closer and closer to the
Julen family.
Was he more than a chauffeur to you?
I once competed in the European Cup without a serviceman,
so that was the first time he helped me out and prepared
my skis. I won one race and finished third in another.
That’s when I had a feeling I could trust him. We have been
through many ups and downs together. Even later, when we
had gone our separate ways, we phoned one another to ask
each other’s opinions.
Do you think the Downhill ace Pirmin Zurbriggen would
have won on a course like the Gran Becca?
That would have been a very difficult race for me. The Gran
Becca does not suit my Downhill skills. What I liked most
during my race career was a consistently steep slope from
top to bottom. To win here in Zermatt I would probably
have been missing a few kilograms.
What is it you liked so much about steep Downhill runs?
Because I also competed in many of the technical disciplines,
I found that when you race in the Slalom, for example,
you tend to ski with extreme, radical movements to
carve turns precisely, even at high speed. As a result, a technical
athlete enters the turn more aggressively, while a true
Downhill athlete tends to drift into it. In terms of physical
attack and style, I always worked very directly with the run.
When you are on a steep slope, being consistent becomes all
the more important. To put it another way, it is the opposite
of hesitation. When I competed, I had absolutely no doubt
about what I was doing. However, I am pretty sure that I
would lose time on the flatter sections of the Gran Becca
run. I’m looking forward to seeing how the ski athletes handle
this Downhill run in the autumn of 2023, because it has
so much to offer. I’ll certainly be on the edge of my seat
watching how this turns out.

COUPE DU MONDE
AU CERVIN?
Il s’agit presque d’un miracle! En un rien de temps, Zermatt
et Cervinia ont mis sur pied quatre courses de ski alpin de
Coupe du monde. Mais leur première édition n’aura lieu
qu’en 2023. Leur ambassadeur est le légendaire champion
olympique de descente valaisan.
Tout était organisé pour des courses à plus de 3000 mètres
d’altitude avec départ en Suisse et arrivée en Italie - deux descentes
pour les hommes et deux pour les femmes. Ces compétitions
devaient ouvrir cet automne la saison de la Coupe
du monde de vitesse. Le budget d’un total de 6,7 millions de
francs était couvert, les sponsors tels que Hugo Boss, Sunrise,
Ochsner Sport, BKW étaient de la partie, et les recettes
étaient également assurées.
Seule absente au programme: la neige. La première dut donc
être annulée. Le mois d’octobre 2022 entrera dans l’histoire
comme le plus chaud depuis que des mesures sont effectuées.
À ce propos, le président de la course Franz Julen
confie: «La nature est toujours la plus forte. Nous sommes
toutefois des gens de la montagne, nous n’abandonnons pas.
Notre projet n’est pas en danger.»
En conséquence, la nouvelle piste, nommée Gran Becca, ne
verra ses premiers athlètes qu’à la fin de l’automne 2023.
Gran Becca peut être traduit par grande montagne et n’est
autre que l’ancien nom du Cervin. En dialecte franco-provençal,
dans la région voisine de Valtournenche, la montagne
est encore appelée ainsi aujourd’hui.
Zermatt Magazin s’est d’ores et déjà entretenu avec le légendaire
skieur Pirmin Zurbriggen, qui fut à son heure de
gloire vainqueur olympique de descente à Calgary en 1988.
Le Valaisan est désormais l’ambassadeur des courses de ski
de Zermatt et partage avec le président des courses un avenir
passionnant mais aussi un passé hors du commun.
Pirmin Zurbriggen, vous êtes ambassadeur du
Matterhorn Cervino Speed Opening. En quoi consiste
le rôle d’ambassadeur de courses de Coupe du monde?
Franz Julen voulait que je joue un rôle dans ces compétitions
et m’a demandé lequel je pensais pouvoir endosser. Je
ne voulais pas participer à l’organisation, j’en avais fait assez
pour le sport. Il faut laisser la place aux jeunes à présent.
Mais j’étais volontiers prêt à aider d’une autre manière. Lors
d’une conférence de presse, il m’a présenté comme ambassadeur.
C’était la première fois que j’entendais ce titre (rires).
Et que faites-vous maintenant?
Immédiatement après l’annonce de la volonté de Zermatt
d’organiser des courses de Coupe du monde, je n’ai cessé

de recevoir des demandes de journalistes du monde entier.
Plus que je ne l’avais imaginé. Il se trouve que, de par mon
nom et mon passé, j’ai souvent affaire aux médias. Mais je
ne suis certainement pas le chargé des relations presse.
Peut-on comparer la Gran Becca avec une autre
piste de ski de Coupe du monde?
Non, car chaque terrain présente son environnement et sa
géométrie propres, qui à leur tour ont un impact sur le rayonnement
de la lumière. Ce qui est unique à cette altitude, c’est
l’absence de points de repère dans la nature, mis à part le
passage qui longe les rochers après le plateau Rosa. Cela peut
s’avérer difficile. Dans un passage en forêt par exemple on
se sent plus sûr, un peu à l’abri. Ici, en haut, au contraire,
cette sensation est absente. En terrain découvert, la lumière
est également différente. C’est donc plus compliqué à gérer.
Les athlètes n’ont pas tous la même capacité
à faire face, j’imagine?
Les différences peuvent même être tout à fait considérables.
Au cours de ma carrière, il y avait régulièrement des
concurrents, qui explosaient littéralement dès que le soleil
apparaissait. D’autres se bloquaient lorsque celui-ci disparaissait.
Je peux même imaginer que la personne qui remportera
la course ici en haut ne sera pas celle à laquelle on
avait pensé. Tout simplement parce que c’est une descente
unique, qui fait que chacun développe son propre style de
descente. À savoir un style très fin, subtil et considérablement
compact. Ce style de ski est plus demandé ici que
d’habitude.
Le président des courses Franz Julen et vous êtes très
liés, il a par exemple écrit des livres sportifs à votre sujet.
Vous étiez déjà en contact lorsque vous étiez un jeune
skieur. Racontez-nous…
Son frère, Max Julen, a deux ans de plus que moi. Franz
Julen venait d’avoir son permis de conduire et avait décidé
de conduire son frère à un camp d’entraînement aux Grisons.

Moi, j’étais assis à l’arrière. J’avais seulement 14 ans. Ensuite,
nous avons souvent fait la route ensemble depuis le
Haut-Valais. Plus tard, Franz est devenu préparateur, manager
et également une sorte de préparateur mental pour
son frère, qui a été champion olympique de slalom géant en
1984. C’est ainsi que je me suis de plus en plus rapproché
de la famille Julen.
Était-il plus qu’un chauffeur pour vous?
Un jour, alors que j’étais à la Coupe d’Europe sans préparateur,
il m’est venu en aide pour la première fois et a
préparé mes skis. J’ai gagné une course et fus troisième
pour une autre. J’ai senti que je pouvais lui faire confiance.
Ensemble, nous avons traversé beaucoup de hauts et
de bas. Même plus tard, lorsque nos chemins se sont
séparés, nous nous appelions, pour entendre l’opinion de
l’autre.
Le descendeur Pirmin Zurbriggen encore en activité aurait-il
pu gagner sur une piste comme la Gran Becca?
Cela aurait été une lutte vraiment difficile. La Gran Becca
n’est pas vraiment conçue pour mes aptitudes. Je préférais
pendant ma carrière avoir affaire à une piste absolument
abrupte de haut en bas. Pour une victoire ici à Zermatt, il
me manquait probablement quelques kilos.
Pourquoi préfériez-vous les pistes escarpées?
J’ai également pratiqué de nombreuses disciplines techniques,
et quand on fait aussi du slalom, on a tendance à
développer des mouvements extrêmes, radicaux à vitesse
importante, par exemple par rapport aux angles de prise.
Un technicien aborde les virages plus durement et grossièrement,
tandis qu’un pur descendeur les attaque plutôt en
glissant. Du point de vue de mon physique et de mon style,
j’ai toujours eu une forme de langage très directe. Lorsque
la pente est raide, cette cohérence est d’autant plus importante.
C’est, si vous voulez, le contraire de l’hésitation.
Chez moi, au contraire, il n’y avait aucun doute. Je perdrais
du temps sur les passages plats de la Gran Becca, j’en suis
presque sûr. Il va être passionnant de voir comment les descendeurs
et les descendeuses s’en sortiront dans cette descente
relativement complète au cours de l’automne 2023. Je
suis dans tous les cas impatient de voir le résultat.

CROSSING – DER
COUNTDOWN LÄUFT
Im Frühsommer 2023 wird ein Generationenprojekt vollendet, welches
als höchste Alpenüberquerung per Seilbahn in die Geschichte eingeht.
Durch viel Pioniergeist und Herzblut wird die Vision Matterhorn Alpine
Crossing und damit einhergehend die ganzjährige Verbindung zwischen
Zermatt und Cervinia per Seilbahn ermöglicht. Die höchste Grenzüberschreitung
Europas bietet zukünftig viel Komfort, spektakuläre
Erlebnisse sowie neue Reisemöglichkeiten.
Eine aussergewöhnliche Baustelle
Im Dorf von Zermatt auf rund 1620 m ü.M. scheint
die Sonne und die Temperaturen sind angenehm
warm. Der Sommer hat den Herbstfarben Platz
gemacht und die Sonne wärmt den Körper schnell
auf. Für eine Jacke ist es beinahe zu warm. Mit der
Bahn dauert die Fahrt ab hier bis zur höchsten
Bergstation Europas rund 45 Minuten. Das Matterhorn
stets in Sicht, werden die Wiesen und Bäume
immer farbiger und ab der Station Trockener
Steg ist die Landschaft schroff, felsig, beeindruckend.
Oben angekommen, bietet das Matterhorn
Glacier Paradise eine unglaubliche Aussicht auf 38
Viertausender sowie 14 verschiedene Gletscher.
Für Gäste relativ unschein- und unsichtbar ist
die Baustelle des Matterhorn Glacier Ride II. Die
Bergstation der neuen 3S Bahn, welche im Frühsommer
2023 ihren Betrieb aufnimmt, wird direkt
mit der bestehenden Bergstation des Matterhorn
Glacier Ride I verbunden sein.
Hinter grossen Schalungstafeln führt die Metalltüre
direkt hinaus in die Felswand vom Klein
Matterhorn, wo der Rohbau der Bergstation sowie
die Einfahrtstützen stehen. Grosse Holzelemente
geben der Station eine gewisse Wärme, auf den
Gerüsten um die Station bewegen sich die Bauarbeiter
– stets gesichert mit Karabiner, Sicherheitsgurt
und Helm. In einem kleinen, weissen Container
sitzt Klaus Gitz, Polier der Ulrich Imboden
AG und Leiter der höchsten Baustelle Europas.
Er liebt seine Arbeit und auch den aussergewöhnlichen
Arbeitsplatz auf fast 4000 m ü. M. «Hier
oben habe ich meine Ruhe», gibt er schmunzelnd
zu. «Es ist ein Privileg, bei diesem Pionierprojekt
mitzuwirken. Die Bedingungen auf dieser Höhe
können sehr herausfordernd und anstrengend sein.
Der Ausblick bei schönem Wetter und der Dämmerung
gibt aber auch wieder viel zurück», so Gitz.
Als letzte grosse Hürde steht der Seilzug zwischen
der Berg- und Talstation noch an. Während rund
vier Monaten werden total fünf Seile gespannt – je
zwei fixe Tragseile pro Seite und ein Zugseil, welches
als endlose Schleife gespleisst ist. Im Verlauf
vom Frühsommer 2023 ist es dann so weit und die
höchste Alpenüberquerung per Seilbahn wird eröffnet.
Eine atemberaubende Erfahrung
Über 2’000 Meter lang ist die Strecke von der
Bergstation Klein Matterhorn hinunter zur Talstation
Testa Grigia. Dabei werden rund 360 Meter
Höhenunterschied bewältigt, und das in nur vier
Minuten Fahrzeit sowie ohne Stützen zwischen
den beiden Stationen. Hoch über dem Theodulgletscher
offenbart sich ein atemberaubendes Panorama
dank dem grosszügigen Kabinendesign
mit den weiten Fensterfronten. Für Gäste, die den
Nervenkitzel suchen, gibt es zwei spezielle Crystal
Ride Kabinen, in denen wird einem regelrecht der
Boden unter den Füssen weggezogen. Nach nur

wenigen Metern klärt sich das Milchglas am Boden
auf und die Sicht wird frei auf die Gletscherlandschaft.
Für einen kurzen Moment stockt der
Atem und die Beine suchen sicheren Tritt auf dem
herkömmlichen Kabinenboden. Nach vorsichtigen
Probeschritten können die Fahrgäste mit wiederhergestelltem
Vertrauen auf dem Glasboden stehen
und direkt aus der Kabine in die beeindruckenden
Gletscherspalten hinabschauen. Die Geschwindigkeit
von 7,5 Metern pro Sekunde wird erst wahrgenommen,
sobald die Kabine in die Station hineinrauscht
und sich vom Zugseil entkoppelt. Sanft
und komfortabel wird die Kabine mittels Reifenförderer
langsam durch die Station geführt, bevor
sie bei deren Verlassen wieder an das Zugseil gekoppelt
wird.
Ein grossartiges Erlebnis
Die neue Ganzjahresverbindung zwischen Zermatt
und Cervinia ist eine Bereicherung und erweitert
das Angebot der Destination Zermatt Matterhorn.
Wer echte Italianità kombiniert mit dem Erlebnis
der höchsten Alpenüberquerung per Seilbahn erleben
will, macht sich am besten gleich nach dem
Frühstück in Zermatt auf den Weg. Mit dem Matterhorn-Express
geht es komfortabel ab der Talstation
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise los Richtung
Trockener Steg. Ein erster Zwischenhalt lohnt sich
bereits auf Schwarzsee. Nirgends sonst kann das
Matterhorn so nahe erlebt werden wie hier. Der
Fotopoint mit den grossen Zermatt-Buchstaben
lädt zum perfekten Erinnerungsfoto ein. Weiter
geht die Fahrt nach Trockener Steg, wo die Landschaft
oberhalb der Baumgrenze etwas karger und
schroffer – jedoch nicht weniger imposant wirkt.
Der Infocube neben der Station bietet die Möglichkeit,
spannende Fakten zum Generationenprojekt
«Matterhorn Alpine Crossing» zu erfahren. Für die
die letzte Etappe zur Bergstation Klein Matterhorn
geht es weiter mit der 2018 eröffneten 3S Bahn
Matterhorn Glacier Ride I. Die 900 Höhenmeter
werden in rund neun Minuten Fahrzeit zurückgelegt
und die 360-Grad-Aussicht bietet Ausblick auf
das Monte-Rosa-Massiv mit der Dufourspitze, dem
Breithorn, dem Matterhorn und den italienischen
Alpen. Auf der höchsten Bergstation Europas angekommen,
bietet das Gipfelerlebnis im Matterhorn
Glacier Paradise diverse Aktivitäten wie die Aussichtsplattform,
der höchste Gletscherpalast der
Welt, eine Cinemalounge und das Restaurant mit
dem Peak Shop für all jene, die ein Erinnerungsstück
nach Hause nehmen möchten.
In nur vier Minuten schwebt die neue 3S Bahn
Matterhorn Glacier Ride II über den Theodulgletscher
Richtung italienische Grenze nach Testa
Grigia. Die neue Erlebniswelt SnowXperience
Plateau Rosa bei der Talstation bietet verschiedene
Aktivitäten wie Snow-Tubing oder ein Beginner
Skigebiet. Das Ski-Equipment kann hier direkt

überschritten und via Laghi Cime Bianche geht es hinunter
nach Cervinia. Einen echten italienischen Espresso geniessen
oder sich in den Läden von Cervinia und Valtournenche
der italienischen Mode widmen, hier kommt das Gefühl
der Italianità so richtig auf. Nach der Erkundungstour durch
das kleine italienische Dorf geht es wiederum per Seilbahn
zurück über die Schweizer Grenze hinauf auf 3883 m ü. M.,
wo eine Stärkung im Restaurant Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
gerade recht kommt. Ob hausgemachte Suppen, Walliser
Spezialitäten aus dem Pfännli, Burger, Pasta oder täglich
wechselnde Desserts und Menüs – In der Showküche kann
gleich dabei zugesehen werden, wie die Speisen frisch und
sorgfältig zubereitet werden. Gestärkt und voller Eindrücke
geht es zurück nach Zermatt, wo der Tag ausklingen kann
und der Charme des wohl schönsten Bergdorfes zum Geniessen
und Ausruhen einlädt.
Ein innovativer Event
Die neue 3S Bahn Matterhorn Glacier Ride II bietet gleich
noch einen weiteren entscheidenden Vorteil. Bei der ersten
länderübergreifenden Abfahrt im alpinen Skizirkus starten
die Speedfahrerinnen und Speedfaherer in die Rennsaison.
Mit der Infrastruktur der Bahnanlagen spielen die Zermatt
Bergbahnen eine Schlüsselrolle in diesem ambitionierten
und innovativen Event. Der Start der Abfahrt befindet
sich auf dem Gletscher der Schweizer Seite und führt über
die Landesgrenze hinunter zum Ziel nach Laghi Cime
Bianche. Beim Grenzübergang befindet sich an der Talstation
der neuen 3S Bahn eine grosse Public Viewing Zone,
welche Spektakel und Stimmung garantiert. Diese kann
dank dem Matterhorn Glacier Ride II ab 2023 bequem zu
Fuss ab Zermatt erreicht werden. Die Skistars erreichen
den Start bequem und schnell ab dem Zielbereich in etwa
20 Minuten.
Eine verantwortungsvolle Einstellung
Die Zermatt Bergbahnen setzen sich seit 20 Jahren für eine
nachhaltige Entwicklung ihres Skigebiets ein und investieren
seit 2002 jährlich bis zu einer Million Franken in Umweltprojekte.
Beim Bau neuer Anlagen spielen ökologische
Überlegungen eine zentrale Rolle. Sämtliche Bauarbeiten
sowie Renaturierungs- und Begrünungsarbeiten werden von
einer Fachperson begleitet. Diese sensibilisiert das Baupersonal
für ökologische Vorgänge und kontrolliert regelmässig
die Baustelle, die Entsorgung der Bauabfälle und den
Zustand der Maschinen. Auch bei den Bauarbeiten zum
Matterhorn Glacier Ride II achten die Verantwortlichen darauf,
den Eingriff in die Gletscherwelt so gering wie möglich
zu halten. Einerseits erfolgt ein Grossteil der Baustellenerschliessung
über die bestehende Pendelbahn. Das benötigte
Material wird an die Bahn angehängt, um die Transportflüge
per Helikopter auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren. Andererseits
kommt wie schon beim Matterhorn Glacier Ride I eine
moderne 3S Bahn zum Einsatz. Das System ist besonders
windresistent und ermöglicht eine Verbindung zwischen den
beiden Bergstationen, die ganz ohne Stützen auskommt.
Für einen umweltfreundlichen Betrieb sorgt auch das effiziente
Antriebssystem der 3S Bahn, der LEITNER Direct-
Drive. Er ist nachhaltiger und ressourcenschonender als andere
Antriebe. Das System funktioniert ohne Getriebe und
braucht kein Getriebeöl. Zudem arbeitet der LEITNER
DirectDrive mit nur wenigen Teilen und einer niedrigen
Drehzahl, weshalb Wartungsaufwand, Verschleiss und Energiebedarf
sehr gering sind.

HAS BEGUN
Early summer 2023 will see the completion of the "project of a
generation" that will go down in history as the highest crossing of
the Alps by cable car. The vision of the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing
enabling the year-round connection of Zermatt and Cervinia
by cable car has been made possible thanks to a great deal of
pioneering spirit, heart and soul. Soon, Europe’s highest border
crossing by cable car will offer a comfortable ride, spectacular
experiences and a whole load of new excursion opportunities.
An extraordinary construction site
In the village of Zermatt at around 1620 metres
above sea level, the sun is shining and the temperatures
are pleasantly warm. Summer has given way
to autumn colours and the sun soon warms up the
body. It is almost too warm for a jacket. It takes
around 45 minutes by train from here to the highest
mountain station in Europe. With the Matterhorn
always in sight, the meadows and trees take
on more and more colour, and from the Trockener
Steg station, the landscape is rugged, rocky and
impressive. Having reached the top of the railway,
the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise offers an incredible
view of 38 peaks above four thousand metres
and 14 different glaciers. The construction site of
the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II is relatively well
concealed and invisible to guests. The mountain
station of the new 3S cable car, which will open
in early summer 2023, will be directly connected
to the existing mountain station of the Matterhorn
Glacier Ride I.
Behind large formwork boards, the metal door
leads directly out into the rock face of the Klein
Matterhorn, where the shell of the mountain station
and the cable car guide bars are located. Large
wooden elements give the station a certain warmth
as the construction workers move around the site,
secured with carabiners, safety belts and wearing
helmets. Klaus Gitz, foreman at Ulrich Imboden
AG and manager of the highest construction site
in Europe, sits in a small, white container. He loves
his work and also the extraordinary workplace at
almost 4,000 metres above sea level. "I enjoy the
quiet up here," he admits with a smile. "It is a privilege
to be part of this pioneering project. The conditions
at this altitude can be very challenging and
exhausting. But the view when the weather is nice,
and the sunset, also give you back a lot," says Gitz.
The last major hurdle is pulling the cable between
the mountain and valley stations. During the past
four months, a total of five cables have been set –
two fixed suspension cables on each side and one
pull rope, which is spliced as an endless loop. In
early summer 2023, the time will have come and
the highest crossing of the Alps by cable car will
open.
A breathtaking experience
The route from the Klein Matterhorn mountain station
down to the Testa Grigia valley station is over
2,000 metres long. It covers a difference in altitude
of around 360 metres in just four minutes without

any support pylons between the two stations. High
above the Theodul Glacier, a breathtaking panorama
opens up thanks to the spacious cabin design
featuring wide surround windows. For guests looking
for a thrill, there are two special Crystal Ride
cabins, in which you literally see down to the ground
from under your feet. After just a few metres, the
frosted glass underneath clears up and the view of
the glacial landscape becomes clear. For a brief moment,
your breath catches in your throat as your feet
seek a safe footing on the cabin floor. Having taken
a few careful trial steps, passengers can stand on the
glass floor with renewed confidence and look down
directly from the cabin into the impressive glacial
crevasses. The speed of 7.5 metres per second is only
noticed as soon as the cabin rushes into the station
and is decoupled from the pull cable. Moving slowly,
the cabin is gently guided through the station on
a tyre conveyor before it is reconnected to the pull
cable on the way out again.
An awesome experience
The new year-round connection between Zermatt
and Cervinia is an asset and expands the range of
services offered by the Zermatt Matterhorn destination.
If you want to enjoy the authentic Italianità
experience combined with the excitement of
the highest Alpine crossing by cable car, it’s best
to set off from Zermatt right after breakfast. The
Matterhorn-Express takes you in comfort from
the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise valley station
up to Trockener Steg. It is well worth stopping at
Schwarzsee lake on the way. Nowhere else can you
experience the Matterhorn so closely as here. The
photo point with Zermatt in large letters invites
you to take the perfect souvenir photo. The journey
then continues to Trockener Steg, where the landscape
above the tree line is barren and rugged – but
no less impressive. The infocube next to the station
offers the opportunity to learn exciting facts about
the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing project. Covering
the final stage to the Klein Matterhorn mountain
station, the 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride I cable car
opened in 2018. The 900-metre difference in altitude
is covered in around nine minutes and the 360
degree view offers views of the Monterosa massif
with the Dufourspitze, Breithorn, Matterhorn and
the Italian Alps. Having reached the highest cable
car station in Europe, the summit experience
in Matterhorn Glacier Paradise offers various activities
such as the viewing platform, the highest
glacier palace in the world, a cinema lounge and
restaurant with the Peak Shop, in case you want to
take home a memento.

directly on site. Next, you cross the border and head down
to Cervinia via Laghi Cime Bianche. Enjoy a genuine
Italian espresso or try out Italian fashion in the Cervinia
and Valtournenche stores – this is where you can experience
the true Italianità feeling. After exploring the small Italian
village, take the cable car back across the Swiss border to
3,883 metres above sea level, where it is time for refreshments
in the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise restaurant.

pan, burgers, pasta or desserts, the menus change daily –
and you can see into the kitchen and watch as your meal
is freshly prepared. Returning to Zermatt, refreshed and

An innovative event
The new 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride II cable car offers yet
another decisive advantage. Speed discipline athletes start
their ski racing season on the first ever cross-border Downhill
run on the Alpine ski circuit. With its railway and cable
car infrastructure, the Zermatt Bergbahnen play a key
role in this ambitious and innovative event. The start of the
Downhill ski run is on the glacier on the Swiss side and leads
across the border down to the finish line in Laghi Cime Bianche.
Where the ski run crosses the border, there is a large
public viewing zone at the valley station of the new 3S cable
car, which guarantees a superb view and a great atmosphere.
This can be easily reached on foot from Zermatt starting in
2023 thanks to the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II cable car.
The ski stars reach the start quickly and easily from the finish
area in around 20 minutes.
Taking environmental responsibility
The railway company Zermatt Bergbahnen has been committed
to the sustainable development of their ski area for 20
years, and since 2002 has invested up to one million francs
in environmental projects every year. Environmental considerations
play a central role when building new infrastructure.
All construction work as well as restoration and greening
work are supervised by an environmental specialist who
makes construction personnel aware of ecological requirements
and regularly checks the construction site, the disposal
of construction waste and the condition of the machinery.
During construction work on the Matterhorn Glacier Ride
II, everybody involved ensures that the impact on the glacier
world is kept to an absolute minimum. Firstly, a large part of
the construction site is served by the existing cable car so the
required materials are transported by train and cable car to
reduce helicopter transport flights to a minimum. And secondly,
like with the Matterhorn Glacier Ride I, a modern 3S
cable car can be used. The system is particularly wind-resistant
and provides a connection between the two mountain
stations without any support pylons in between. The efficient
3S cable car drive system, powered by LEITNER DirectDrive,
also ensures environmentally friendly operation.
It is more sustainable and resource-saving than other drive
systems. The system works without a gearbox and requires
no transmission oil. In addition, the LEITNER DirectDrive
system involves only very few components and operates at
a low speed, which means that maintenance costs, wear and
energy consumption are very low.

À REBOURS EST LANCÉ
Au début de l’été 2023 s’achèvera un projet intergénérationnel qui s’inscrit
dans l’histoire comme la plus haute traversée des Alpes en téléphérique.
Esprit de pionnier et passion en grandes quantités sont à l’origine de la vision
Matterhorn Alpine Crossing qui permettra d’assurer la liaison entre Zermatt et
Cervinia par téléphérique tout au long de l’année. Le passage de frontière le
plus élevé d’Europe est synonyme de confort, d’expériences spectaculaires
et de nouveaux modes de voyage.
Un chantier hors normes
À quelque 1620 mètres d’altitude, le village de Zermatt profite
du soleil et d’agréables températures. L’été a laissé la
place aux couleurs automnales et l’astre du jour réchauffe
rapidement le corps. Il fait presque trop chaud pour enfiler
une veste. Avec les remontées mécaniques, le trajet qui permet
de relier la plus haute station d’altitude d’Europe dure
environ 45 minutes. Depuis la télécabine, on observe le Cervin
toujours en point de mire ainsi que les pâturages et les
arbres de plus en plus colorés en cette saison. Puis, à partir
de la station Trockener Steg, le paysage se fait plus rude, rocheux,
impressionnant. En haut, le Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
offre une vue incroyable sur trente-huit sommets de
plus de 4000 mètres et quatorze glaciers. Pour les visiteurs,
le chantier du Matterhorn Glacier Ride II passe presque
inaperçu. Pourtant, on y travaille, car la station supérieure
du nouveau téléphérique 3S, qui sera mis en service au début
de l’été 2023, doit encore être reliée à la station existante
du Matterhorn Glacier Ride I.
Derrière de gros panneaux de coffrage, une porte métallique
conduit directement dans la paroi rocheuse du petit Cervin,
où se trouvent le gros œuvre de la station supérieure
ainsi que les pylônes d’arrivée. De gros éléments en bois
confèrent une certaine chaleur à la station. Sur les échafaudages
de la station s’activent des ouvriers, toujours assurés
par leurs mousquetons, ceintures de sécurité et casques.
Klaus Gitz, contremaître de la société Ulrich Imboden SA
et responsable du plus haut chantier d’Europe, est installé
dans un petit container blanc. Il adore son travail et aussi
son poste hors du commun à près de 4000 mètres d’altitude.
«Ici, j’ai la paix», avoue-t-il en souriant. «C’est un privilège
de faire partie de ce projet pionnier. Les conditions peuvent
être très exigeantes et fatigantes à cette altitude. Mais la vue
par beau temps et au coucher du soleil nous dédommage»,
confie Klaus Gitz. À ce stade, le dernier obstacle à franchir
est l’installation du câble entre la station de départ et
la station d’arrivée. Durant quatre mois environ, les travaux
se concentreront sur la tension de cinq câbles, deux câbles
porteurs par côté et un câble tracteur épissé en boucle sans
fin. Au début de l’été 2023, tout sera prêt et la plus haute
traversée des Alpes par téléphérique pourra être inaugurée.
Une expérience époustouflante
Le trajet entre la station d’altitude de Petit Cervin et la station
inférieure de Testa Grigia mesure quelque 2000 mètres.
Le dénivelé est d’environ 360 mètres et s’effectue en seulement
quatre minutes de trajet et sans appui entre les deux
stations. Bien au-dessus du glacier du Théodule, un panorama
époustouflant s’offre aux passagers grâce au spacieux
design de la cabine, dotée de larges baies vitrées. Pour les
personnes en quête de sensations fortes, il existe deux cabines
spéciales nommées Crystal Ride dans lesquelles le
plancher semble réellement disparaître. En effet, quelques
mètres après le départ, le plancher en verre laiteux s’éclaircit,
libérant la vue sur le paysage glaciaire. Un bref instant,
on arrête de respirer et les jambes cherchent un appui stable
sur le plancher conventionnel de la cabine. Après quelques
pas hésitants, les passagers reprennent confiance sur le
plancher en verre et peuvent admirer les impressionnantes
crevasses en contrebas. La vitesse est de 7,5 mètres par seconde
et n’est perçue qu’au moment où la cabine arrive à
vive allure à la station et se débraye du câble de traction. Un

convoyeur assure ensuite une traversée de la station tout en
douceur avant que la cabine ne se solidarise à nouveau avec
le câble au moment de quitter la station.
Une expérience formidable
La nouvelle liaison qui relie toute l’année Zermatt et Cervinia
est un enrichissement et élargit l’offre de la destination
Zermatt Cervin. Les voyageurs qui souhaitent combiner la
véritable italianité avec l’expérience de la plus haute traversée
des Alpes par téléphérique sont bien inspirés de quitter
Zermatt dès que le petit-déjeuner est terminé. À bord
du Matterhorn-Express, l’ascension de Matterhorn Glacier
Paradise en direction de Trockener Steg est confortable. Une
première halte s’impose d’ores et déjà à Schwarzsee. Ici, le
Cervin est vraiment à portée de main. Et le point photo,
avec Zermatt en grandes lettres, invite à prendre la parfaite
photo souvenir. Puis, le voyage continue jusqu’à Trockener
Steg où le paysage, au-dessus de la limite de la végétation, se
fait plus pauvre et rude, mais reste imposant. Le Infocube à
côté de la station permet d’en savoir plus sur le projet intergénérationnel
Matterhorn Alpine Crossing. Pour rejoindre
la dernière étape en haut du Petit Cervin, le voyageur monte
à bord de la télécabine 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride I ouverte
en 2018. Les 900 mètres de dénivelé sont avalés en
quelque neuf minutes de trajet et la vue à 360 degrés permet
de découvrir le massif du Mont Rose avec la pointe Dufour,
le Breithorn, le Cervin et les Alpes italiennes. Arrivé à la plus
haute station d’altitude d’Europe, le visiteur pourra choisir
entre différentes activités proposées au Matterhorn Glacier
Paradise: la plateforme panoramique, le palais glaciaire le
plus haut du monde, un salon de cinéma, le restaurant et le
Peak Shop pour tous ceux qui souhaitent ramener un petit
souvenir à la maison.
En quatre minutes seulement le nouveau téléphérique 3S
Matterhorn Glacier Ride II glisse au-dessus du glacier du
Théodule en direction de la frontière italienne pour rejoindre
le SnowXperience Plateau Rosa. Ce nouvel univers près de
la station-aval Testa Grigia propose différentes expériences
telles que le snow-tubing et un domaine skiable pour débutants.
L’ensemble de l’équipement de ski peut être loué directement
sur place. Ensuite, on traverse la frontière et l’on
descend jusqu’à Cervinia via Laghi Cime Bianche. L’heure
est venue de déguster un authentique expresso italien ou
de se consacrer à la mode italienne dans les boutiques de
Cervinia ou de Valtournenche pour plonger au cœur de
l’italianité. Après un tour de découverte à travers le petit
village italien, il est temps de rebrousser chemin à bord du
téléphérique pour traverser la frontière suisse à une altitude
de 3883 mètres d’altitude et reprendre des forces au restaurant
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. On trouvera au menu des
soupes faites maison, des spécialités valaisannes à la poêle,
des hamburgers, des pâtes ainsi que des desserts et des menus
qui changent tous les jours. La cuisine ouverte permet
de voir les cuisiniers qui préparent en direct des plats pleins
de fraîcheur. C’est revigoré et la tête pleine d’impressions
que l’on redescend à Zermatt où la journée peut s’achever.
Le charme du plus beau village de montagne du monde

Un évènement innovant
Le nouveau téléphérique 3S Matterhorn Glacier Ride II

Glacier Ride II. Quant aux vedettes du ski, elles rejoindront
confortablement et rapidement le départ en une
vingtaine de minutes depuis de la zone d’arrivée.
Une posture responsable
Depuis 20 ans déjà, les Zermatt Bergbahnen s’engagent en
faveur d’un développement responsable de leur domaine
skiable et investissent depuis 2002 annuellement jusqu’à un
million de francs dans des projets environnementaux. Les
réflexions écologiques ont joué un rôle prépondérant lors
de la construction de la nouvelle installation. Tous les travaux
ainsi que les travaux de renaturation et de végétalisation
sont accompagnés par un spécialiste. Celui-ci sensibilise
le personnel du chantier aux procédures écologiques et
contrôle régulièrement le chantier, l’évacuation des déchets
et l’état des machines.
Dans le cadre des travaux liés au Matterhorn Glacier Ride
II, les responsables veillent à limiter autant que possible
l’impact sur l’univers glaciaire. D’une part, une grande partie
des accès au chantier se fait via le téléphérique à va-etvient
existant. Le matériel nécessaire est accroché à la cabine
pour réduire à un minimum les vols en hélicoptère.
D’autre part, on utilise également une télécabine tricâble
moderne comme c’était le cas pour le Matterhorn Glacier
Ride I. Le système est particulièrement résistant au vent et
permet de relier les deux stations d’altitude sans avoir à recourir
à des piliers.
L’exploitation est également écoresponsable grâce à un
système de traction efficace du téléphérique tricâble: le
LEITNER DirectDrive. Il est durable et moins gourmand
en ressources que d’autres systèmes. Le tout fonctionne
sans engrenage et n’a pas besoin d’huile d’engrenage. Par
ailleurs, le LEITNER DirectDrive travaille avec un nombre
réduit de pièces et un faible régime. De ce fait, les travaux de
maintenance, l’usure et le besoin en énergie sont très faibles.

Die prestigeträchtige Gornergrat Bahn feiert 2023 einen
runden Geburtstag. Rechtzeitig zum Jubiläum verkehren
auf der Panoramastrecke neue Züge. Sie sind schneller
und komfortabler.
POLARIS. So heissen die neuen Züge der Gornergrat
Bahn, die seit dieser Wintersaison zwischen
Zermatt und dem Gornergrat in Betrieb sind. Das
Rollmaterial weiss zu überzeugen. Die neuen Züge
verfügen über Niederflureinstiege, ein modernes
Kundeninformationssystem, können schneller fahren
und sind laufruhiger. Die Innen- und Aussengestaltung
der Züge ist futuristisch, exklusiv und
zugleich zeitlos. Die neuen POLARIS-Züge sind
Ersatz und Ergänzung für die zum Teil bis 57-jährigen
Züge, die am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer angekommen
sind.
Die Gornergrat Bahn ist gefragt. Sie befördert
rund 800’000 Gäste pro Jahr von Zermatt auf den
Gornergrat. Die Fahrt von 1605 hoch auf 3089
Meter über Meer dauert eine halbe Stunde. Die

Das Panorama auf dem Gornergrat ist atemberaubend.
Rund um den Endbahnhof ragen 29 majestätische
Viertausender in den Himmel. Das 4478
Meter hohe Matterhorn ist zum Greifen nahe. Der
Bau der Gornergrat Bahn war eine bahntechnische
Pionierleistung. Und ein Kraftakt.
Der Bau der Gornergrat Bahn beginnt 1896 und
ist eng mit dem Aufkommen des modernen Alpinismus
verknüpft. Denn in den Jahrzehnten davor
machten sich immer mehr Menschen – insbesondere
englische Alpinisten – daran, die höchsten
Gipfel der Alpen zu erklimmen. Auch in Zermatt.
Am 14. Juli 1865 wurde das Matterhorn erstmals
bestiegen. Gleichzeitig stieg das Interesse am Gornergrat
mit seiner Aussicht auf die umliegenden
Viertausender. Um 1870 entwickelte sich am Gornergrat
ein eigentlicher Tourismus. Doch die Pläne
für den Bau einer Bahn stiessen bei der Gemeinde
Zermatt und dem Kanton Wallis zunächst auf Widerstand.
Sie fürchteten durch die Bahn eine grosse
Konkurrenz für die Bergführer und Träger aus dem
Dorf. Beim Bau der Gornergrat Bahn standen über
1000 Arbeiter gleichzeitig im Einsatz. Die meisten
von ihnen waren Italiener. Die Bauzeit zwischen
Schneeschmelze und Wintereinbruch war kurz.
Der Bau war ein Knochenjob. In den Büchern
der ersten Direktoren und Projektleiter wird festgehalten,
dass die Leistung der Arbeiter in höheren
Lagen nur noch die Hälfte derer im Tal betrug
– und auf dem Gornergrat scheinbar fast gänzlich
aufhörte. Die Bauleitung reagierte mit einer ärztlichen
Bewachung und Untersuchung. Trotz der
schwierigen Bedingungen gelang es den Arbeitern,
die gigantische Ausflugsbahn in nur zwei Jahren zu
erstellen. Am 20. August 1898 nahm die Gornergrat
Bahn ihren Betrieb auf. Sie war die erste elektrisch
betriebene Zahnradbahn der Schweiz und die
zweite weltweit. Die geheimnisvolle Welt der Berge
war jetzt für jedermann zugänglich.

Wegen Lawinen und starker Schneeverwehungen
brauchte es entlang der Strecke Schutzgalerien, um
auch im Winter einen sicheren Betrieb in höheren
Lagen zu garantieren. Mit den Jahren fuhr die Gornergrat
Bahn im Winter immer höher hinauf. 1942
erreichte sie erstmals auch im Winter die Station
Gornergrat-Kulm.
Bis heute wurden die Gleise, das Rollmaterial und
die Gebäude der Gornergrat Bahn in regelmässigen
Abständen erneuert. Der Komfort und die Sicherheit
der Gäste stehen an erster Stelle.

A PROUD CELEBRATION –
THE GORNERGRAT BAHN
IS TURNING 125 YEARS OLD
In 2023, the prestigious Gornergrat Bahn will celebrate a major
birthday. Just in time for this anniversary, new trains will start their
journeys along the panoramic line. They will be faster and more
comfortable than before.
POLARIS. Is the name of the new trains on the Gornergrat
Bahn, which will run this winter between Zermatt and the
Gornergrat. The rolling stock is very impressive and will offer
low-level access, a modern customer information system
and will travel faster and quieter than its predecessors. Both
the inside and outside designs of the trains are futuristic,
classy, and timeless. The new POLARIS trains are replacements
and additions to the those which have come to the
end of their journeys, some of which are as old as 57 years.
The Gornergrat Bahn is a highly demanded attraction.
Around 800’000 guests per year step onboard the Gornergrat
from Zermatt. It travels from 1605 metres high up to
3089 metres above sea level and lasts around half an hour.
The 9.3-kilometre-stretch travels through tunnels, galleries,
over viaducts and through forests at speeds up to 30km/h,
travelling high into the mountains.
The panoramic view from the Gornergrat is absolutely
breath-taking, where the end station is towered by twenty-nine
majestic mountain peaks all at over 4,000 metres
high. The Matterhorn, a 4478-metre-high mountain, is just
a stone’s throw away. The construction of the Gornergrat
Bahn was a pioneering achievement in railway technology,
as well as an absolute feat of strength!
The construction of the Gornergrat Bahn began in 1896
and is closely linked to the emergence of modern alpinism.
In the decades leading up to its construction, more and more
people, particularly English alpinists, started scaling the
highest peaks in the Alps – and visiting Zermatt. On the 14 th
of July 1865, Matterhorn was climbed for the first time. At
the same time, the interest in the Gornergrat increased, with
its view of the towering 4000-metre-high peaks. Around the
year 1870, tourism developed on the Gornergrat, however
initially the plans to build a new railway were met with resistance
from the Zermatt community and the canton of Valais.
They feared that the railway would create a lot of competition
for the mountain guides and porters from the village.
During the construction of the Gornergrat Bahn, more than
1000 workers were simultaneously employed to assist with
the build – most of them came from Italy. The construction
period between the snowmelt and the onset of winter was
short and it was a back-breaking job. The first directors and
project managers recorded in their books that the performance
of workers at higher altitudes was only half of that of
those working down in the valley – and apparently stopped
almost entirely on the Gornergrat. Site management responded
to their findings by introducing medical surveillance
and examination. Despite the difficult conditions, the
workers managed to build the gigantic excursion railway in
just two years. On the 20 th of August 1898, the Gornergrat
Bahn was in business. It was the first electric cogwheel railway
in Switzerland and the second worldwide. The secret
world of the mountains was now unlocked for all to explore.
During the first 30 years of its existence, the Gornergrat
Bahn couldn’t travel during winter. Due to avalanches and
heavy snow drifts, protective galleries were needed along
the route to guarantee safe operation at higher altitudes,
even in winter. Over the years, each winter the Gornergrat
Bahn travelled higher and higher and in 1942 it reached the
Gornergrat-Kulm station for the first-time during winter.
Until today, the tracks, rolling stock and the buildings of
the Gornergrat Bahn have been regularly renewed. Comfort
and safety of the guests remain a top priority.

POLARIS. Tel est le nom des nouveaux trains
du Gornergrat Bahn qui relient Zermatt au Gornergrat
depuis cet hiver. Le matériel roulant a de
quoi convaincre. Les nouvelles rames disposent
d’un plancher surbaissé, d’un système d’information
clientèle moderne, et sont également plus
rapides et plus silencieuses. Leur design intérieur
et extérieur se veut futuriste et exclusif, tout en
restant intemporel. Les nouveaux trains POLA-
RIS viennent remplacer et compléter les rames actuelles,
dont certaines ont 57 ans et sont arrivées
en fin de vie.
Très fréquenté, le Gornergrat Bahn transporte
chaque année environ 800’000 de touristes entre
Zermatt et le Gornergrat. La montée, de 1605 à
3089 mètres d’altitude, dure une demi-heure, à
une vitesse pouvant atteindre 30 km/heure. L’itinéraire
de 9,3 km traverse tunnels, galeries, viaducs
et forêts.
Sur le Gornergrat, la vue est à couper le souffle.
La gare terminus est entourée de 29 sommets majestueux
qui se dressent à plus de 4000 mètres. Le
Cervin, qui culmine à 4478 mètres, est à portée de
main. La construction du Gornergrat Bahn fut une
première en matière de technique ferroviaire, mais
aussi un tour de force.
Débutée en 1896, la construction du Gornergrat
Bahn est étroitement liée à l’émergence de l’alpinisme
moderne. En effet, au cours des décennies
précédentes, de plus en plus d’alpinistes – en particulier
des Anglais – s’étaient lancés à l’assaut des
plus hauts sommets des Alpes. Zermatt ne fut pas
en reste: la première ascension du Cervin eut lieu le
14 juillet 1865. Dans le même temps, l’intérêt pour
le Gornergrat et la vue sur les sommets de plus de
4000 mètres qui l’entourent se fit plus pressant.
Vers 1870, l’activité touristique commença véritablement
à se développer. Pourtant, les plans de
construction d’un chemin de fer se heurtèrent aux
réticences de la commune de Zermatt et du canton
du Valais, qui craignaient que le train ne fasse de
l’ombre aux guides de montagne et aux porteurs
du village.
La construction du Gornergrat Bahn mobilisa simultanément
plus de 1000 travailleurs, italiens
pour la plupart. Il fallait agir vite, entre la fonte des
neiges et le début de l’hiver suivant. Les travaux
furent très pénibles. Dans les livres des premiers
directeurs et chefs de projet, on peut lire que la performance
des travailleurs était moitié moins élevée
en altitude que dans la vallée – et qu’elle semblait
quasiment nulle sur le Gornergrat. La direction du
chantier mit alors en place une surveillance et des
examens médicaux. Malgré les conditions difficiles,

Gornergrat Kulm au tournant du siècle
les travailleurs parvinrent à terminer le gigantesque
chemin de fer touristique en seulement deux ans.
Le Gornergrat Bahn fut mis en service le 20 août
1898. Il s’agissait à l’époque du premier chemin de
fer à crémaillère électrique de Suisse, et du deuxième
au monde. L’univers secret des montagnes
était désormais accessible à tout un chacun.
Durant ses 30 premières années d’existence, le
Gornergrat Bahn ne pouvait pas circuler en hiver.
En raison des avalanches et des congères, des galeries
de protection furent nécessaires le long des
voies, afin de garantir une exploitation sûre en
haute montagne durant la saison froide. Au fil des
années, le Gornergrat Bahn gagna toujours plus
en altitude en hiver. Durant l’hiver 1942, il parvint
pour la première fois à la station Gornergrat-Kulm.
Jusqu’à ce jour, les voies, le matériel roulant et
les bâtiments du Gornergrat Bahn ont fait l’objet
d’une rénovation régulière, toujours dans le souci
du confort et de la sécurité des touristes.

Seit 17 Jahren findet das «Zermatt Music Festival & Academy»
statt. Das Besondere am Festival ist, dass junge Musikerinnen
und Musiker mit eingesessenen Ensembles zusammen üben
und konzertieren. Olivier Verrey, Präsident des Festivals,
über die besondere Atmosphäre.
Olivier Verrey, Sie sind Präsident des Zermatt Music
Festival & Academy. Wie ist die Idee zum Festival
entstanden?
Bereits in den 50er-Jahren gaben die Pianistin Clara Haskil
und der Geigensolist Pablo Casals Meisterkurse und Konzerte
in Zermatt. Es schien mir richtig, auch später in Zermatt
ein Element der Kultur einzubringen, die mir sehr am
Herzen liegt. Durch Zufall traf ich in Zermatt einst jemanden,
der ein Riffelalp-Festival organisieren wollte – was keine
optimale Idee war. Ich habe sie aber aufgegriffen und
zugunsten eines Zermatt Festivals umgewandelt, das letztlich
die gesamte Region und nicht nur einen Teil davon anspricht.
Welche Bedeutung hat das Festival
für die Destination Zermatt?
Zermatt ist ein so schöner Ort. Und das nicht nur zum
Skifahren oder für Bergsteigerinnen und Bergsteiger, sondern
auch für Kulturinteressierte. Zermatt bietet viele ideale
Orte für musikalische Darbietungen, zum Beispiel die
Pfarrkirche Sankt Mauritius mit ungefähr 450 Plätzen. Die
Idee war also, etwas Neues nach Zermatt zu bringen, damit
die Leute im Ausland und in der Schweiz Zermatt nicht nur
wegen des Gletschers und des Matterhorns wahrnehmen,
sondern auch wegen seiner anderen Facetten. Wir wollten
in Zermatt etwas gründen, was von ebenso grosser Qualität
ist wie die Hotels und die Gastronomie. Ich hatte das
Glück, von Anfang an gute Kontakte zu haben, etwa zum
Scharoun-Ensemble der Berliner Philharmonie. Musikerinnen
und Musiker, die zu den besten der Welt gehören. Das
Ensemble passte also perfekt zum hohen Niveau, das Zermatt
bietet.
Wie kann man sich die Vorbereitungen
auf das Festival jeweils vorstellen?
Es ist eine Arbeit, die das ganze Jahr über anfällt. Wir haben
grosses Glück, das Scharoun-Ensemble zu haben, das jedes
Jahr eine Verbindung zwischen dem Festival und namhaften
Musikerinnen und Musikern herstellt. Am Anfang befürchteten
wir, dass das Ensemble vielleicht nach seinem ersten
Auftritt kein weiteres Mal nach Zermatt reisen würde. Aber
sie kamen wieder. Jedes Jahr.

Die Leiterin der Academy, Anna von Lüneburg, arbeitet
praktisch das ganze Jahr über am Festival. An den Aktivitäten,
den Vorbereitungen und der Auswahl der Kandidatinnen
und Kandidaten. Das Zermatt Festival ist in erster Linie
eine Akademie, auch wenn es von Anfang an schon Konzerte
gab. Und auch das Scharoun-Ensemble hatte immer eine
pädagogische Berufung und übt diese auch heute noch in
Zermatt aus. 30 bis 35 junge Musikerinnen und Musiker
mit einer aussergewöhnlichen Ausbildung lernen von den
Profis des Scharoun-Ensembles und spielen mit ihnen. Das
sind vier der grossen Konzerte, die wir am Festival haben.
Die Akademie ist wirklich die Seele dieser Veranstaltung.
Wie viele Besucherinnen und Besucher verzeichnet
das Zermatt Music Festival & Academy jeweils?
Wir kommen ungefähr auf 5000 bis 6000 Besucherinnen
und Besucher. Das ist nicht sehr viel, nicht vergleichbar mit
den Zahlen der grossen Festivals. Leider sind seit der Pandemie
die Zahlen in den Opernhäusern zurückgegangen. Das
ist ein grosses Problem für Musik und Theater. Aber etwa
durch private Finanzierung, Mäzene und Freunde sind wir
in der Lage, weiterhin zu bestehen. Und wir werden auch
nächstes Jahr noch existieren.

Wie wird das Festival in der Gemeinde Zermatt
angenommen?
Es ist essenziell, die Verbindungen mit Zermatt
und seiner Bevölkerung, der Burgergemeinde und
der Gemeinde zu stärken. Dank der Präsidentin
Romy Biner-Hauser, die die Musik liebt, haben wir
Verbindungen vor Ort, die den Leuten nahe sind.
Ich habe den Eindruck, dass das Festival heute akzeptiert
und geschätzt wird. Auch die Kontakte mit
dem Pfarrer, den Schulen und dem Pflegeheim,
um jeweils Konzerte an diesen Orten zu organisieren,
sind sehr positiv. Es ist wichtig, Kontakte zu
pflegen und zu kultivieren, und das Wohlwollen der
Gemeinde und der Hotels ist sehr wertvoll. Aber
jedes Jahr muss man an dieser Freundschaft arbeiten,
man muss sie aktiv stärken.
Was hat sich seit der Gründung
des Festivals verändert?
Wir haben mehr oder weniger das gleiche Budget,
die gleichen Musikerinnen und Musiker und den
gleichen Esprit wie 2005. Wir haben mittlerweile
ein paar Besucherinnen und Besucher dazugewonnen
und blicken auf ein treues Publikum. Im
Laufe der Jahre haben wir Veranstaltungsorte gewechselt
und zusätzliche kleine Events geschaffen.
Zum Beispiel gibt es jetzt Jazz Shows, es gibt Jam
Sessions, kleine Konzerte von Musikerinnen und
Musikern mit einem ganz besonderen Repertoire.
Nach und nach ändern wir immer wieder etwas.
Wohin könnte das Zermatt Music Festival &
Academy in Zukunft gehen?
Das ist schwer zu sagen. Ich kann Ihnen aber sagen,
wohin wir nicht gehen werden. Wir werden
nicht den Bau eines Konzertsaals fordern, wir werden
nicht die grossen Musikfestivals in Verbier oder
Gstaad imitieren wollen. Das Festival in Zermatt
ist weltweit einzigartig, und das Publikum schätzt
genau diese Atmosphäre. Die Konzerte in der Kirche
sind fast immer voll, das freut mich zu sehen.
Es gibt während des Festivals auch Musik in den
Gottesdiensten, ein Chor singt zwischen den Predigten.
Das ist wunderbar. Wenn das Festival so
weitergeht, wie es jetzt läuft, ist es schon gut. Und
vielleicht müssen wir eines Tages ja sogar vor der
Kirche Leinwände installieren, wenn der Zulauf
weiterhin so erfreulich ist. Wir treffen uns das ganze
Jahr über und planen und organisieren, um jedes
Jahr zehn schöne Tage in Zermatt zu verbringen.

OF A KIND"
The Zermatt Music Festival & Academy has taken place for the last
17 years. The festival is especially appreciated for the opportunities
it affords young musicians, allowing them to practice and
perform with established ensembles. Olivier Verrey, president
of the festival, talks about its unique atmosphere.
Olivier Verrey, you are the President of the
Zermatt Music Festival & Academy. How did
the idea for the Festival come about?
Back in the 1950s, the pianist Clara Haskil and the
cello soloist Pablo Casals gave master classes and
concerts in Zermatt. It seemed right to me to bring
an element of culture to Zermatt that is close to my
heart. Through pure coincidence, I met someone in
Zermatt who wanted to organise a festival at the Riffelalp
resort – which was not the best idea. However,
I thought about it and turned it into the Zermatt
Festival, which benefits the whole region and not
just a part of it.
What meaning does the Festival
have for Zermatt?
Zermatt is such a beautiful place. Not only for skiing
and mountaineering, but also for those interested
in culture. Zermatt offers the ideal place for musical
concerts, for example in the parish church of St
Mauritius which seats about 450 people. The idea
was also to bring something new to Zermatt so that
people from abroad as well as in Switzerland itself
would think of Zermatt not only in terms of the glaciers
and the Matterhorn, but also its other features.
We wanted to start something in Zermatt that was to
the same high standard as the hotels and food. I was
lucky to have good contacts from the start, for example
at the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Musicians who are amongst the best in the
world. The Ensemble also suited the higher level that
Zermatt was offering.
How do you go about the preparations
for the Festival?
It’s a job that takes up the whole year. It is wonderful
to have the Scharoun Ensemble, which connects the
Festival with renowned musicians every year. At the
beginning we were afraid that perhaps the Ensemble
wouldn’t want to come back again to Zermatt. But
they have been coming every year.
Anna von Lüneburg, the Director of the Academy,
works on the Festival practically all year round: on
its activities, the preparations, and the choice of candidates.
The Zermatt Festival is in the first instance
an academy, even though it has been giving excellent
concerts from the start. The Scharoun Ensemble
has also always had an educational calling and still
practises this in Zermatt today. Thirty or forty young
musicians with exceptional training learn from the
professionals of the Scharoun Ensemble and play
alongside them. These are four of the biggest concerts
that we have at the Festival. The Academy is
really the soul of this event.
How many visitors usually attend
the Zermatt Music Festival & Academy?
We usually get about five to six thousand visitors.
That is not very many compared to the larger
festivals. Unfortunately, since the pandemic, the
numbers in the opera houses have fallen. That is a
huge problem both for music and for theatre. But
through private finance, patrons and friends, we are
in a position to continue and we will still be here
next year.

How is the Festival accepted in the municipality
of Zermatt?
It is essential to strengthen the connection between Zermatt
and its inhabitants, the civic community and the municipality.
Thanks to its President, Romy Biner-Hauser, who loves
music, we have connections with local people. I have the
impression that the Festival is accepted and even treasured.
Also, contact with the church, school and old age home,
where concerts are sometimes held, is also very positive. It
is important to maintain and cultivate contacts and the benevolence
of the municipality and the hotel is very valuable.
What has changed since the founding of the Festival?
We have more or less the same budget, the same musicians
and the same spirit as back in 2005. In the meantime, we
have gain a few more visitors and are looking at a loyal following.
During the years we have changed the performance
venues and created some additional smaller events. For example,
there are now jazz shows, jam sessions, and smaller
concerts performed by musicians with quite a different repertoire.
Little by little we are always changing something.
Where can the Zermatt Music Festival &
Academy go in the future?
That is difficult to say, but I can say where we will not be
going. We will not be building a concert hall, nor will we
be imitating the larger music festivals such as Verbier or
Gstaad. The Zermatt Festival is unique in the world and the
public treasures exactly this atmosphere. The concerts in the
church are almost always full, which I love to see. During
the Festival there is also music during the church services
as a choir sings between the sermons. That is wonderful. If
the Festival continues in the same way as it does now, that
would be really good. And perhaps one day, if this amount
of visitors continues, we could install screens in front of the
church. We meet up throughout the year to plan and organise
ten beautiful days every year in Zermatt.

La particularité du festival est que de jeunes musiciennes et musiciens
répètent et participent à un concert avec un ensemble établi. Olivier
Verrey, président du festival, nous parle de son atmosphère particulière.
Olivier Verrey, vous êtes le président de Zermatt Music
Festival & Academy. Comment l’idée du festival
est-elle née?
Dans les années 50, la pianiste Claral Haskil et le violoncelliste
Pablo Casals donnaient déjà des master classes et des
concerts à Zermatt. Il m’a donc semblé juste d’introduire à
Zermatt un pan de culture qui me tient beaucoup à cœur.
Et le hasard a voulu que je rencontre à l’époque quelqu’un
à Zermatt qui voulait monter un Festival Riffelalp, ce qui
n’était pas une idée optimale. J’ai donc saisi la balle au bond
et créé le Zermatt Festival, qui englobe toute la région et pas
seulement une petite partie.
Quelle est l’importance du festival
pour la destination Zermatt?
Zermatt est un si bel endroit. Et pas seulement pour y pratiquer
le ski ou l’alpinisme, mais aussi pour les amateurs
de culture. Zermatt recèle d’endroits parfaits pour des représentations
musicales, à l’instar de l’église paroissiale
St-Maurice qui dispose d’environ 450 places. L’idée était
donc de créer quelque chose d’inédit à Zermatt, afin que
les gens à l’étranger et en Suisse n’associent pas seulement
Zermatt aux glaciers et au Cervin, mais aussi à ses autres facettes.
Nous voulions créer quelque chose à Zermatt qui soit
de la même qualité que les hôtels et la gastronomie. J’ai eu

la chance d’avoir de bon contacts dès le début, notamment
avec le Sharoun Ensemble de la Philharmonie de Berlin,
dont les musiciennes et les musiciens comptent parmi les
meilleurs du monde. L’ensemble correspond donc parfaitement
au niveau d’excellence de Zermatt.
À quoi ressemblent les préparatifs de ce festival?
C’est un travail qui s’échelonne tout au long de l’année. Il
est très réjouissant d’avoir le Sharoun Ensemble qui, chaque
année, fait le lien entre le festival et des musiciennes et musiciens
de renom. Au début, nous avions peur que l’ensemble
ne revienne pas après son premier concert à Zermatt. Mais
il est revenu. Chaque année.
La directrice de l’académie, Anna von Lüneburg, travaille
pratiquement toute l’année pour le festival. Elle élabore les
activités et choisit les candidates et les candidats. Le Zermatt
Festival est avant tout une académie, même s’il y a eu
des concerts dès sa première édition. D’ailleurs, le Sharoun
Ensemble a toujours eu cette vocation pédagogique et s’y
tient également à Zermatt. 30 à 35 jeunes musiciennes et
musiciens ayant une formation exceptionnelle apprennent
des professionnels du Sharoun Ensemble et jouent avec eux.
Il s’agit de quatre grands concerts qui font partie du festival.
L’académie est vraiment l’âme de cet évènement.
Combien de personnes viennent chaque année
au Zermatt Music Festival & Academy?
Nous comptons entre 5000 et 6000 personnes. Ce n’est pas
beaucoup, comparé aux chiffres des grands festivals. Malheureusement,
depuis la pandémie, les fréquentations sont
en baisse dans les opéras. C’est un grand problème pour la
musique et le théâtre. Grâce à des financements privés, des
mécènes et des amis, nous sommes encore en mesure d’exister.
Et nous existerons encore l’année prochaine.
Quelle résonnance le festival trouve-t-il au sein
de la commune de Zermatt?
Il est essentiel de renforcer la relation entre Zermatt et sa
population, la bourgeoisie et la commune. Grâce à la présidente
Romy Biner-Hauser, qui est une mélomane, nous
avons des relations sur place qui font le lien. Aujourd’hui,
j’ai l’impression que le festival est accepté et apprécié. Les
contacts avec le pasteur, les écoles et la résidence médicalisée
pour organiser des concerts dans leurs murs sont
très positifs. Il est important d’entretenir et de soigner ces
contacts. Et la bienveillance de la commune et des hôtels est
très précieuse. Mais chaque année, il nous faut activement
renforcer ces amitiés.
Quels sont les changements qui se sont opérés
depuis la création du festival?
Nous avons plus ou moins le même budget, les mêmes musiciennes
et musiciens et le même état d’esprit qu’en 2005.
Nous avons réussi à augmenter le nombre de visiteuses et
de visiteurs et pouvons compter sur un public fidèle. Au fil
des années, nous avons organisé nos concerts dans différents
lieux et créé de petits évènements supplémentaires. Il
y a par exemple les jazz shows, des bœufs, des petits concerts
de musiciennes et de musiciens ayant un répertoire très particulier.
Nous changeons toujours un peu quelque chose.
Quelle est la voie que le Zermatt Music Festival &
Academy suivra à l’avenir?
C’est difficile à dire. Je peux toutefois vous dire où nous
n’irons pas. Nous n’exigerons pas la construction d’une
salle de concert et nous ne voulons pas imiter les grands festivals
de musique tels que ceux de Verbier et de Gstaad. Le
festival à Zermatt est unique au monde et le public apprécie
exactement cette atmosphère-là. Les concerts à l’église font
presque toujours salle comble et je m’en réjouis. Pendant le
festival, il y a également de la musique durant les offices, un
chœur chante entre les prêches. C’est formidable. Si le festival
continue tel qu’il fonctionne aujourd’hui, c’est déjà bien.
Et peut-être qu’un jour nous devrons monter des écrans
devant l’église, si le public continue d’affluer. Nous nous
réunissons tout au long de l’année, planifions et organisons
pour passer chaque année dix beaux jours à Zermatt.

in der Gastronomie und Hotellerie: Christian Eckert, neuer Präsident
des Hoteliervereins Zermatt, steht vor riesigen Herausforderungen.
Doch er bleibt optimistisch.

Christian Eckert, Sie amten seit dem 21. April
2022 als neuer Präsident des Zermatter
Hoteliervereins. Warum haben Sie dieses
Mandat übernommen?
Als ich vor einem Jahr angefragt wurde, dem Vorstand
beizutreten, sagte ich sofort zu. Der Hotelierverein
Zermatt ist eine grosse Sektion. Da kann
man etwas bewegen. Präsident wurde ich dann
eher zufällig. Eigentlich war für dieses Amt jemand
anderes vorgesehen. Doch diese Person ist dann
aus dem Vorstand ausgetreten und so wurde ich ins
kalte Wasser geworfen.
Die Zermatter Hoteliers haben harte Zeiten
hinter sich. Wie kamen sie durch die Corona-
Krise?
Das war schon eine anspruchsvolle und intensive
Zeit für alle Leistungsträger. Rückblickend kann
man sagen, dass wir untereinander sehr gut kommuniziert
haben und wir auch deshalb gut durch
die Krise gekommen sind.
Kaum ist die Corona-Krise vorbei, steht
mit dem Ukraine-Krieg die nächste grosse
Herausforderung an. Wie bekommen dies
die Zermatter Hoteliers zu spüren?
Die grössten Sorgen bereiten uns die steigenden
Preise und die Lieferengpässe. Wir hoffen, dass der
Konflikt in der Ukraine bald beigelegt wird.
Sie sind Geschäftsführer des Luxushotels
Omnia. Kommen hochstehende Hotels
leichter durch Krisen?
Da sind wohl alle Hotels ähnlich betroffen. Was sicher
hilfreich ist: wenn man auf eine treue Stammkundschaft
zählen kann. Dadurch kann man die
Verluste teils kompensieren. Zudem ist der Wegfall
von Gästen immer auch eine Chance, neue Gäste
zu gewinnen.
Der Zermatter Hotelierverein hat fünf strategische
Geschäftsfelder definiert. Bei der
Organisationsentwicklung geht es mitunter
um die Professionalisierungsstrategie.
Waren die Zermatter Hotels bislang zu
wenig professionell?
Das würde ich nicht sagen. Die Zermatter Hoteliers
haben seit jeher sehr gute Arbeit geleistet.
Indessen haben wir beschlossen, ein Geschäftsführungsmandat
einzuführen, das über ein Partnerprogramm
finanziert wird. So können die
Zermatter Hoteliers ihre Interessen noch besser
vertreten.
Zermatt möchte einen breiten Gästemix.
Wie kann man das steuern?
Zermatt hat seit Jahren sehr heterogene Gästegruppen.
Dies erreichen wir mit zielgerichteten
Kampagnen, die wir in enger Zusammenarbeit mit
Zermatt Tourismus lancieren. Unter dem Strich
muss das Produkt für den Gast stimmen.
Mit der neuen Bergbahn Alpine X und den
neuen Weltcuprennen hat Zermatt einmal mehr
wegweisende Projekte lanciert, die potenzielle
Gäste aus aller Herren Länder anziehen. Wie
wichtig ist das für die Destination?
Sehr wichtig. Wir brauchen gross angedachte Projekte,
um unser Ziel einer Ganzjahresdestination
zu erreichen. Dazu gehört beispielsweise auch das
Zermatt Unplugged. Mit solchen Events können
wir die durch den Klimawandel immer kürzer werdende
Wintersaison verlängern. Das Sommergeschäft
wird immer wichtiger. Auch da müssen wir
gross denken.
Wichtig ist auch die Verkehrsanbindung. Sind
Sie hinsichtlich der samstäglichen Verkehrsproblematik
inzwischen einen Schritt weitergekommen?
An den Spitzentagen im letzten Winter waren
wir da schon am Anschlag. Leider konnte auf die
Schnelle keine perfekte Lösung erarbeitet werden.
Dafür fehlt es schlicht an Kapazitäten. Wir hoffen,
dass die schrittweise Eröffnung der Oberwalliser
Autobahn A9 diese Situation entschärfen wird.
Sie waren schon Touristiker in Stationen wie
Gstaad oder St. Moritz. Ist es für Sie aus der
Perspektive eines Auswärtigen nachvollziehbar,
dass die Strasse zum Weltkurort Zermatt für den
breiten Verkehr geschlossen bleibt?
Eine offene Strasse nach Zermatt wird leider ein
Wunschtraum bleiben. Zumindest bekommen wir
jetzt eine wintersichere Bahn und eine wintersichere
Strasse für die Einheimischen.
Andere sagen, Zermatt habe einfach zu viele
Touristen. Hat Zermatt ein Overtourism-
Problem?
Klar ziehen wir mit unserer Natur, unserer hochstehenden
Hotellerie und unseren top Bergbahnen
sehr viele Gäste an, vor allem im Tagestourismus.
Und klar bringt dies gewisse Wachstumsprobleme
mit sich. Doch von Overtourism würde ich
nicht sprechen. Diesen Eindruck hat man zuweilen
vielleicht, wenn man sich das Getümmel in der

Bahnhofstrasse vor Augen führt. Doch dieser Eindruck
täuscht. Es ist Zermatts Nadelöhr. Einmal
die Bahnhofstrasse passiert, verteilen sich die Gäste
recht gut in dem weitläufigen Kurort.
Derweil strebt Zermatt eine längere Aufenthaltsdauer
seiner Gäste an. Wie kann man die Tagestouristen
zu einer Übernachtung motivieren?
Mit guten Angeboten und fairen Preisen.
Dazu braucht es auch gutes Personal. Während
der Corona-Pandemie war in Ihrer Branche allerdings
ein regelrechter «Exodus» zu beobachten.
Wie wollen Sie die Mitarbeitenden in der Hotellerie
und Gastronomie dazu bewegen, dem Tourismus
die Stange zu halten?
Wir in Zermatt planen für diese Saison eine «Staff
Card» für alle Mitarbeitenden. Damit können diese
etwa von vergünstigten Preisen in Restaurants, Geschäften
oder bei den Bergbahnen profitieren.
Die Mitarbeitenden in der Hotellerie und Gastronomie
fordern bessere Arbeitsbedingungen,
etwa mehr Lohn und mehr Freizeit. Wie stehen
Sie dazu?
Das muss letztlich jeder Betrieb für sich entscheiden.
Einerseits müssen wir Rücksicht auf die Interessen
und Bedürfnisse der Angestellten nehmen.
Gleichzeitig müssen wir aber auch die Wirtschaftlichkeit
im Auge behalten. Unter dem Strich muss
es für beide stimmen.
In Zermatt kommt noch die Problematik des
fehlenden Wohnraums für die Angestellten dazu.
Seit dem Lonza-Boom ist es bis hinab in
den Talgrund kaum noch möglich, günstigen
Wohnraum zu finden. Haben es die Zermatter
Hoteliers versäumt, für ihre Angestellten
Wohnungen bereitzustellen?
Die meisten Zermatter Hotels sind diesbezüglich gut
aufgestellt. Aber natürlich nicht alle. Während Corona
gingen viele Studios zurück an die Vermieter, und
sie werden jetzt durch die Besitzer neu vermietet
und nicht mehr an die Hotels. Dies verschärft die
angespannte Situation noch zusätzlich. Hier braucht
es alle, damit die Situation entschärft werden kann.
Hat die Zermatter Hotellerie für die Wintersaison
überhaupt genug Personal?
Gutes Personal fehlt effektiv an allen Ecken und
Enden. Wir hegen Hoffnung in unsere eigene Jobplattform
«jobzermatt.ch» und in die besagte «Staff
Card».
Fehlendes Personal, Krieg, Inflation und
womöglich nochmals Corona-Stress: Erwarten
Sie trotzdem eine gute Wintersaison?
Selbstverständlich. Hoffentlich mit viel Schnee. Und
es wäre toll, wenn wir den Drive der Weltcuprennen
in die Wintersaison mitnehmen könnten. Die Buchungsstände
sind jedenfalls schon mal sehr gut.
Nach zwei Jahren Corona sind wir krisenerprobt
und bereit für eine tolle Saison.

Coronavirus, the war in Ukraine, inflation and the shortage
of staff in the restaurants and hotels: Christian Eckert, the
new president of the Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association, is facing
huge challenges, yet his optimism remains.
Christian Eckert, you have acted as the new
president of the Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association
since the 21 st of April 2022. Why did you take
on this position?
When I was asked to join the board a year ago, I
immediately said yes. The Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association
is a huge body. Where one can really make
a change. To be honest, becoming president happened
by chance. In fact, someone else was intended
for this role, but that person resigned from the
board, so I was thrown in at the deep end.
The hoteliers in Zermatt have fallen on hard times.
How did they get through Covid pandemic?
It was a demanding and intense time for all service
providers. Looking back, we can proudly say that
we communicated very well amongst ourselves, and
that’s ultimately what got us through the crisis.
The coronavirus pandemic has barely ended,
and yet we are already facing the next big
challenge of the war in Ukraine. How do the
hotelliers in Zermatt feel about this?
The major concerns for us are the rising prices and
supply bottlenecks. We hope that the conflict in
Ukraine will soon be resolved.
You are the managing director of the luxury
hotel Omnia. Is it easier for high-end hotels
to get through crises?
All hotels are affected in similar ways. It is certainly
helpful when you can count on loyal, regular clientele.
This partly compensates for the losses. However,
the loss of guests is always an opportunity to
attract new guests.

The Zermatt Hoteliers’ Association has defined
five strategic business areas. Organisational
development is often about the strategy of professionalisation.
Were the Zermatt hotels
not quite professional enough prior to this?
I wouldn’t say that. The hoteliers of Zermatt have
always produced very good work. But we also decided
to introduce a management mandate that will
be financed through a partner programme. This will
allow the hoteliers in Zermatt to better represent
their interests.
Zermatt would like to welcome a diverse variety
of guests. How can this be facilitated?
For years, Zermatt has been visited by an extremely
diverse range of guests. We achieve this through targeted
campaigns that are launched in close cooperation
with Zermatt Tourism. The bottom line is that
the product has to be right for the guest.
With the new Alpine X mountain railway
and the new World Cup races, Zermatt has
once again launched groundbreaking projects
that attract potential guests from all over the
world. How important is this for Zermatt
as a destination?
Extremely important. We need large-scale projects
to achieve our goal of becoming an all-season destination.
This also includes Zermatt Unplugged, for
example. Such events allow us to extend our winter
season, which is getting increasingly shorter as a result
of climate change. Summer business is more
important than ever. So that’s another reason why
we need to think big.
Transport connections are also important. Have
you made any progress with the Saturday traffic
problems?
On peak days last winter, we were already at our
limit. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to quickly find
the perfect solution. There is simply not enough capacity
for this. We are hoping that the gradual opening
of the Upper Valais motorway A9 will improve
the situation.
You have previously worked as a tourism manager
at stations like Gstaad and St. Moritz. From
the perspective of a non-local, do you understand
why the road to the world famous village
of Zermatt remains closed to the general public?
An open road to Zermatt will unfortunately only
remain a wishful dream. However, at the moment
we are working on getting a winter-safe railway and
road for the locals.

Others are saying that Zermatt simply has too
many tourists. Does Zermatt have a problem
with over tourism?
We obviously attract a lot of guests with our nature,
high quality hotels and our top mountain railways,
especially in day tourism. And although it brings
certain growth problems with it, I wouldn’t say it’s
down to over tourism. That might be the initial impression
that’s given during the hustle and bustle of
walking along Bahnhofstrasse, but this impression
is deceptive. Bahnhofstrasse is Zermatt’s eye of the
needle, once you get past it the guests are dispersed
throughout the vast village.

Meanwhile, Zermatt aims to increase the length
of stay of its guests. How can day tourists be
motivated to stay overnight?
With good offers and fair prices.
For that, you also require good staff. During
the Covid pandemic, your industry was in a
state of exodus. How do you want to persuade
employees in the hotel and catering industry
to stay with tourism?
This season in Zermatt we are planning to offer all
employees a "Staff Card". They can use this to enjoy
reduced prices at restaurants, shops or on the
mountain railways.
Employees in the hotel and catering industry
are demanding better working conditions,
such as more pay and more time off. What is
your stance on this?
Ultimately, each company must decide this for itself.
On the one hand, we must take into consideration
the interests and needs of employees. On the
other hand, we need to pay attention to the economic
viability of this. The bottom line is to find a
solution that works for both sides.
Zermatt also has a problem of lack of staff
accommodation. Since the Lonza boom, it is
almost impossible to find affordable housing in
the valley. Have the Zermatt hoteliers failed to
provide accommodation for their employees?
Most of the hotels in Zermatt are well positioned
in this respect. But of course, that doesn’t apply to
all. During the pandemic, many of the studios went
back to the landlords, who are now re-renting them
but not to the hotels. This further exacerbates the
already tense state of affairs. This is where everyone
needs to come together to help defuse the situation.
Overall, do the hoteliers in Zermatt have enough
staff for the winter season?
Good staff are effectively are missing all around.
We are holding onto the hope of our very own job
platform "jobzermatt.ch" and the aforementioned
"Staff Card".
Lack of staff, war, inflation and the possible continued
stress from Covid: Despite all of this do
you still expect to have a good winter season?
Absolutely! We are hoping for lots of snow and it
would be great if we can take the drive of the World
Cup races with us into the winter season. Bookings
are already looking very good. After two years of
Covid, we are stronger than ever and ready for a
great season ahead.

Covid, guerre en Ukraine, inflation et manque criant de
personnel dans la restauration et l’hôtellerie: Christian Eckert,
nouveau président de l’association des hôteliers de Zermatt,
fait face à d’immenses défis. Mais il reste optimiste.
Christian Eckert, depuis le 21 avril 2022, vous
occupez le poste de président de l’association
des hôteliers de Zermatt. Pourquoi avez-vous
accepté ce mandat?
«Lorsque l’on m’a demandé il y a une année de
rejoindre le comité, j’ai tout de suite dit oui. L’association
des hôteliers de Zermatt est une grande
section. Elle permet réellement de faire bouger les
choses. Par contre, la présidence est plutôt un hasard.
Une autre personne était en fait prévue pour
le poste. Mais celle-ci a quitté le comité directeur
et on m’a jeté à l’eau.»
Les hôteliers de Zermatt sortent d’une période
difficile. Comment avez-vous traversé la
pandémie?
«La période a été intense et compliquée pour tous
les prestataires. Rétrospectivement, on peut dire
que nous avons très bien communiqué entre nous,
ce qui nous a notamment permis de bien traverser
la crise.»
À peine la crise du Covid terminée, voilà que
la guerre en Ukraine constitue le prochain défi
à relever. Comment les hôteliers de Zermatt
ressentent-ils la situation?
«Les plus grosses inquiétudes sont liées à l’augmentation
des prix et aux difficultés d’approvisionnement.
Nous espérons que le conflit en Ukraine
sera bientôt terminé.»
Vous êtes le directeur général de l’hôtel de luxe
Omnia. Est-ce que les hôtels haut de gamme ont
plus de facilité à traverser les crises?
«L’impact est le même pour tous les hôtels. Mais
le fait de pouvoir compter sur de fidèles habitués

facilite la donne. Elle nous permet de
compenser une partie des pertes. Par
ailleurs, l’absence de clients est également
une opportunité pour en attirer
de nouveaux.»
L’association des hôteliers de Zermatt a défini cinq
domaines d’activité stratégiques. Dans le cadre du
développement de l’organisation, il est notamment
question d’une stratégie de professionnalisation.
Les hôtels de Zermatt n’étaient-ils pas professionnels
jusqu’à présent?
«Pas que je sache. Les hôtels de Zermatt ont toujours fait un
excellent travail. Mais nous avons décidé de lancer un mandat
de direction qui est financé par le biais d’un programme

de partenariat. Ainsi, les hôteliers de Zermatt peuvent encore
mieux défendre leurs intérêts.»
Zermatt souhaite une clientèle largement diversifiée.
Comment y parvient-on?
«Zermatt accueille depuis des années des groupes de visiteurs
très hétérogènes. Nous y parvenons par le biais de
campagnes ciblées que nous lançons en étroite collaboration
avec Zermatt Tourisme. Au final, le produit doit être
convaincant pour le client.»

Le nouveau téléphérique Alpine X et la nouvelle
descente de Coupe du monde constituent des projets
visionnaires dont Zermatt a le secret et qui attireront
des visiteurs potentiels du monde entier. Quelle est
l’importance de tels projets pour la destination?
«Très grande. Nous avons besoin de projets de grande envergure
pour atteindre notre objectif d’être une destination
quatre saisons. Le festival Zermatt Unplugged s’inscrit dans
cette logique. Avec de tels évènements, nous pouvons prolonger
la saison d’hiver qui raccourcit de plus en plus en
raison du réchauffement climatique. La saison d’été gagne
en importance. Là aussi, nous devons penser en grand.»
La connexion au réseau des transports est également
importante. Avez-vous avancé d’un pas par rapport à la
problématique du transport le samedi?
«L’hiver dernier, les jours de grande affluence nous étions
à la limite des capacités. Malheureusement, il n’a pas été
possible d’élaborer la solution parfaite d’un claquement de
doigts. Les capacités font tout simplement défaut. Nous
espérons que l’ouverture progressive de l’autoroute A9 du
Haut-Valais détendra la situation.»
Vous avez déjà travaillé dans le tourisme dans des hauts
lieux tels que Gstaad et St-Moritz. Pouvez-vous, en tant
que personne extérieure, comprendre que la route qui
mène au lieu de villégiature de renommée internationale
qu’est Zermatt soit fermée au grand public?
«Une route ouverte menant à Zermatt restera malheureusement
un rêve. Mais nous aurons désormais une liaison ferroviaire
sûre en hiver et aussi une route praticable en hiver
pour les locaux.»
D’autres disent que Zermatt a tout simplement trop de
touristes. Y a-t-il un problème de surtourisme à Zermatt?
«Évidemment qu’avec notre nature, la qualité de notre hôtellerie
et nos excellentes remontées mécaniques, nous attirons
beaucoup de visiteurs, surtout des touristes à la journée.
Et évidemment qu’il en résulte un certain problème
de croissance. Mais je ne parlerais pas de surtourisme. On
peut avoir cette impression lorsque l’on voit la cohue sur la
Bahnhofstrasse. Mais l’impression est trompeuse. C’est le
goulet d’étranglement de Zermatt. Une fois que l’on a quitté
la Bahnhofstrasse, les visiteurs se dispersent assez bien dans
notre vaste village.»
Actuellement, Zermatt souhaite que ses visiteurs
restent plus longtemps. Comment peut-on motiver
les personnes qui viennent pour une journée à rester
pour la nuit?
«Avec de bonnes offres et des prix raisonnables.»
Ce qui nécessite également du personnel de qualité.
Durant la pandémie de Covid19, votre branche a dû faire
face à un véritable «exode». Comment comptez-vous
motiver les employés de l’hôtellerie et de la restauration
à soutenir le tourisme?
«À Zermatt, nous avons prévu pour cette saison une «Staff
Card» pour tous les employés. Celle-ci leur permet de profiter
de prix réduits dans les restaurants, les magasins et pour
les remontées mécaniques.»
Les employés de l’hôtellerie et de la restauration
demandent de meilleures conditions de travail,
à savoir un meilleur salaire et plus de temps libre.
Qu’en pensez-vous?
«Il faut que chaque entreprise décide pour elle-même. D’une
part, nous devons tenir compte des intérêts et des besoins
des employés. Mais en même temps, nous ne pouvons pas
perdre de vue la viabilité économique. Au final, il faut que la
situation soit satisfaisante pour tous.»
S’ajoute à Zermatt la pénurie de logements pour les
employés. Depuis le boom de Lonza, il n’est quasiment
plus possible de trouver des logements abordables entre
ici et le bas de la vallée. Les hôteliers de Zermatt ont-ils
négligé de mettre des logements à la disposition de leurs
employés?
«La plupart des hôtels de Zermatt maîtrisent bien la situation.
Mais évidemment pas tous. Durant la pandémie, de
nombreux studios ont été rendus à leurs propriétaires qui
désormais les relouent, mais plus aux hôtels. La situation
déjà tendue s’en trouve aggravée. Il faut que tout le monde
tire à la même corde pour désamorcer la situation.»
L’hôtellerie de Zermatt dispose-t-elle de suffisamment de
personnel pour la saison d’hiver?
«Nous manquons de personnel de qualité dans tous les domaines.
Nous misons sur notre propre plateforme de recrutement
«jobzermatt.ch» et ladite «Staff Card».
Manque de personnel, guerre, inflation et un probable
retour du stress lié au Covid. Comptez-vous quand
même réaliser une bonne saison d’hiver?
«Évidemment. Et je l’espère avec beaucoup de neige. Ce
serait génial si nous pouvions garder l’élan suscité par les
courses de Coupe du monde pour la saison d’hiver. Le
nombre de réservations est en tout cas très bon. Après deux
ans de pandémie, nous sommes aguerris et prêts pour une
belle saison.»

Das hat seinen Grund: Im Mittelalter gelobten die Zermatter,
zum Schutz vor Naturgewalten einmal im Jahr über den
«Col de Bertol» nach Sitten zu pilgern. In der Folge wandten
sie sich den lauschigen Dörfern des Ering-Tals zu, wo sich
noch Zermatter Spuren finden.
Begegnungen von Bergführern aus Zermatt und aus seinen
südlichen Nachbargemeinden am Monte Rosa verliefen
aber immer sehr einträchtig. Sie legten den Grundstein zur
heutigen Freundschaft der touristischen Orte am Monte
Rosa. Im ländlichen Umfeld von Gressoney, einer der bedeutendsten
alpinen Stationen der Region, wird noch «Walser-Titsch»
gesprochen. Es ist dies, dank seiner melodischen
Umlaute, ein altertümliches, dem Lötschentaler-Dialekt
verwandtes Idiom. Sprachforscher, die einen vokalen Zugang
zum Althochdeutschen suchen, hätten ihre helle
Freude daran.
Die elegante Leichtigkeit, mit welcher der Tourismus das
sich zu Füssen des mächtigen Monte Rosa räkelnde Gressoney
bezirzt, entwertet die schweisstreibende ländliche Arbeit.
Eine rigide Zonenplanung behindert die Ansiedlung
von Gewerbe im idyllischen Bergdorf. Im Weiteren reisst
das Schulsystem des Aostatals eine verführerische Pforte zur
gefälligen Kultur Italiens auf und gefährdet die traditionelle
Lebensform und das Walser-Titsch.
Es ist nicht dasselbe, an festlich gestimmten Walser-Tagungen
teilzunehmen, als in den gelebten Sprachalltag
des bedeutendsten Walser-Dorfes einzutauchen. Genau
das war fünf Walser-Freunden aus Zermatt, die seit ein
paar Jahren zusammen mit Gleichgesinnten aus Gressoney
einen mit Bildern und Mundart-Texten bespickten
Walser-Jahreskalender gestalten, vergönnt. Dank dem ortsvertrauten
Moritz wurden sie bei einem Ortsbummel auf
Schritt und Tritt angesprochen und zum Umtrunk oder gar
Imbiss geladen. Diese Gastfreundschaft kulminierte in einer
aufschlussreichen Präsentation im grosszügigen Walser-Kulturzentrum.
Nach Süden und Norden
Die Wanderungen der Walser verliefen, auf uralten Handelspfaden,
nicht ausschliesslich als südwärts drängender
Tross, sondern erfolgten vereinzelt auch in gegenseitiger
Richtung. Das unterstreicht der bei uns heimische Name
«Welschen», den noch Goethe für die Italiener gebrauchte.
Noch eindrücklicher jedoch illustriert uns dies die Chronik
der legendären Gressoneyer Krämer, die mit Krätzen voller
Textilien am Rücken ab dem 15. Jahrhundert die Schweiz
durchstreiften. Nicht wenige sind im Norden hängen geblieben,
wovon Namen wie Cyprian zeugen. Manche allerdings
sind, vom aufkommenden Tourismus verlockt, in
ihr Hochtal zurückgekehrt. Nicht nur «Krämer» sind über
die vergletscherten Pässe gewandert, auch die Chronik der
berühmten Bergführer-Dynastie «Knubel» (ital. Squinobal)
zeugt davon. Vermutlich sind sie mit dem Hauptharst der
Walser im 11. oder 12. Jahrhundert vom Oberwallis ins
obere Lystal gezogen und teils im 19. Jahrhundert ins Wallis
zurückgekehrt. Die Knubels schrieben sowohl im Süden
als auch im Norden der Alpen Bergführergeschichte. Peter
Knubel errichtete mit Josef Lochmatter die erste Schutzunterkunft
am Matterhorn und wagte sich recht bald nach der
Tragödie von 1865 an den Berg der Berge. Er war auch der
erste Bergführer, der Gäste in den Kaukasus führte.

In contrast to the Lötschen or Saas valleys, the rear of the Matter Valley
was never considered a "deployment zone" for Walser migrations
(emigration of Valaisans to the Cisalpine border area).
the attractive culture of Italy. Attending a ceremonial Walser
conference is not the same as immersing oneself in the
everyday life of the language in the most important Walser
village. Five Walser friends from Zermatt were privileged to
have experienced this. For the last few years, they have also
been creating an annual Walser calendar, with pictures and
dialect texts, together with like-minded people from Gressoney.
Thanks to Moritz, who was familiar with the area,
they were approached at every turn and invited in for a drink
or snack. This hospitality culminated in an enlightening presentation
in the spacious Walser Cultural Centre.
Gressoney: newly built in traditional style.
This is because in the Middle Ages, the people of Zermatt
vowed to make a pilgrimage over the "Col de Bertol" to Sion
once a year as protection against the forces of nature. Subsequently,
they turned to the secluded villages of the Valley
d’Hérence, where you can still find traces of people of Zermatt
today. Mountain guides from Zermatt and its neighnouring
communities to the south would meet on Monte
Rosa. The meetings were always very amicable and laid the
foundations for today’s friendship between the different
touristic spots on Monte Rosa.
In the rural surroundings of the Italian town of Gressoney
(one of the region’s most prominent alpine stations), the
ancient German dialect of "Walser-Titsch" is still spoken.
Thanks to its melodic umlauts, this is an ancient idiom related
to the dialect in the Lötschental valley. This is sure to
delight any German-speaking linguists who are looking for a
vocal gateway into Old High German.
The elegant lightness of tourism which charms Gressoney,
the town that’s nestled the foot of the mighty Monte Rosa,
devalues the strenuous agricultural work that goes into the
area. With its rigid zoning plan, the settlement of businesses
in this idyllic mountain village is near impossible. The traditional
way of Walserism life and the Walser-Titsch dialect
have been further endangered due to the school system of
the Aosta Valley which has torn open a seductive gateway to
Down South and Up North
The migration of the Walser people on ancient trade routes
did not just take place on a southward-pressing troop, but
also occasionally northbound. This is underlined by the term
"Welschen", a term formerly used by Goethe to describe the
Italians but is now a Swiss German term for people living in
the French part of Switzerland.
What is even more impressive, is the chronicle of the legendary
"Gressoneyer Krämer", a group of merchants from
Gressoney, who roamed Switzerland from the 15 th century
onwards with dross full of textiles on their backs. Quite
a few got stuck in the north, to which names like Cyprian
bear witness. Some, however, returned to their high valley,
tempted by the emerging tourism.
The "Krämer" were not the only people to have hiked over
the glaciated passes, the famous Knubel family, a family of
Swiss mountaineers and guides also made this journey.
It is assumed that they moved with the main body of Walsers
from the Upper Valais to the Upper Lys Valley in the 11 th
or 12 th century and partly returned to the Valais in the 19 th
century. The Knubel family wrote mountaineering history
in both the south and north of the Alps. Peter Knubel built
the first shelter on the Matterhorn with Josef Lochmatter
and ventured to the "mountain of all mountains" shortly
after the fatal tragedy of the Matterhorn’s first climbers in
1865. He was also the first mountain guide to take guests to
the Caucasus region.

UNE AMITIÉ AU MONT ROSE
Contrairement aux vallées du Lötschental
et de Saas, le fond de la vallée de
la Matter n’a jamais été une zone de
migration des Walser (émigration de
Valaisans dans les régions frontalières
cisalpines).
Et pour cause: au Moyen Âge, les habitants de Zermatt faisaient
vœu de se rendre une fois par an en pèlerinage à Sion
en empruntant le col de Bertol pour se protéger des forces
de la nature. Par la suite, ils se tournèrent vers les agréables
villages du val d’Hérens où l’on trouve encore leurs traces.
L’amitié qui lie les lieux touristiques au pied du Mont Rose
trouve donc son origine ailleurs. En effet, elle s’est tissée au
fil des années par les rencontres toujours très cordiales sur
les flancs du Mont Rose entre les guides de montagne de
Zermatt et ceux des villages voisins.
Dans le cadre rural de Gressoney, une des principales stations
alpines de la région, on parle encore l’allemand des
Walsers, le walser-titsch. C’est un idiome ancien, proche du
dialecte du Lötschental par sa mélodieuse métaphonie. Il
ferait le bonheur des linguistes à la recherche d’un accès
vocal au vieux-haut-allemand.
L’élégante légèreté avec laquelle le tourisme charme Gressoney,
qui se prélasse au pied de l’imposant Mont Rose,
dévalorise le dur labeur que réclame la campagne. Une
planification rigide des zones empêche l’établissement de
commerces dans l’idyllique village d’altitude. Par ailleurs, le
système scolaire du val d’Aoste ouvre une porte séduisante
à la complaisante culture italienne et met en danger le mode
de vie traditionnel ainsi que le walser-titsch. Participer à des
réunions de Walsers à l’ambiance festive n’est en aucune façon
comparable à une plongée dans la réalité linguistique du
plus important village walser. C’est précisément ce qu’ont
pu faire cinq amis des Walsers de Zermatt. Depuis quelques
années, ils créent un calendrier Walser annuel, avec des photos
et des textes en dialecte, en collaboration avec des habitants
de Gressoney partageant les mêmes idées. Grâce à
Moritz, familier des lieux, ils ont pu découvrir le village et
les habitants qui les ont spontanément approchés et invités
à prendre un verre, voire une collation. Cette hospitalité a
trouvé son apogée dans une passionnante présentation dans
le vaste centre culturel walser.
La belle vallée de Gressoney.
Vers le sud et vers le nord
Lors de leurs migrations, les Walser empruntèrent d’anciennes
voies commerciales, pas seulement en masse vers
le sud, mais de manière isolée également en sens inverse.
C’est d’ailleurs ce dont témoigne le terme «Welsch» que les
Suisses alémaniques utilisent pour désigner les personnes de
Suisse romande, mais que l’écrivain allemand Goethe utilisait
à son époque pour parler des Italiens. Mais la chronique
des légendaires marchands de Gressoney (Gressoneyer
Krämer), qui parcouraient la Suisse à partir du XV e siècle
avec des hottes remplies de textiles, nous en donne une illustration
encore plus impressionnante. Nombre d’entre eux
restèrent d’ailleurs au nord, ce dont témoignent des noms
tels que Cyprien. Certains toutefois, attirés par l’avènement
du tourisme, retournèrent dans leur haute vallée. Mais il
n’y a pas que les marchands qui s’aventuraient au-delà des
cols des glaciers, comme en témoigne une autre chronique,
celle de la dynastie des Knubel, fameuse lignée de guides de
montagne, dont le pendant italien est Squinobal.
Ils ont probablement fait partie du premier grand groupe
des Walser à migrer du Haut-Valais vers le haut de la vallée
du Lys au XI e ou XII e siècle et sont en partie revenus en
Valais au cours du XIX e siècle. Les Knubel font partie de
l’histoire des guides de montagne tant au sud qu’au nord
des Alpes. Peter Knubel participa d’ailleurs en compagnie
de Josef Lochmatter à la construction de la première cabane
du Cervin et s’aventura rapidement après la tragédie
de 1865 sur les pentes de la montagne des montagnes. Il fut
également le premier guide de montagne à accompagner des
clients au Caucase.

WARUM MARTINA ZALETEL
IN ZERMATT EINE NEUE
HEIMAT GEFUNDEN HAT
Sie hat einen guten Job als Anwältin, doch sie träumt
vom eigenen Hotel. Über Österreich kommt Martina Zaletel
nach Zermatt. Und sie will bleiben.
Schon als kleines Kind hegt Martina Zaletel einen Traum:
Eines Tages will sie ihr eigenes Hotel besitzen. «Das Hotelgewerbe,
die Gastronomie haben mich schon immer fasziniert»,
sagt sie. Doch vorerst bleibt es beim Traum.
Nach der Schule schlägt die heute 40-jährige Slowenin, sie
wächst in Kranj auf, einen gänzlich anderen Berufsweg ein.
Sie studiert Jura, fängt nach dem Studium bei einer grossen
Firma an. «Ich habe gemerkt, dass die Juristerei nichts für
mich ist», sagt Zaletel.
Vor gut zehn Jahren wagt sie dann einen gewaltigen Schritt.
Sie kündigt ihren Job als Juristin, fängt bei einer Hotelkette
in Slowenien als Rezeptionistin an. Doch der Tourismus in
ihrem Heimatland ist damals noch nicht so entwickelt wie
heute, die Löhne sind tief. Zaletel will mehr, sie zieht es
deshalb weiter. Nach Norden. In Österreich heuert sie wieder
als Rezeptionistin an. «Der Anfang war schwer», sagt sie.
Neben dem neuen Job muss Zaletel auch Deutsch lernen.
Der Rückschlag lässt nicht lange auf sich warten. Zaletel
erhält die Kündigung, ein Schock für die ehemalige Juristin.
«Aber ich habe nicht aufgegeben und die nächste Stelle als
Rezeptionistin angetreten.»
Zaletel findet sich in ihrem neuen Berufsfeld immer besser
zurecht, lernt das Hotelgewerbe von der Pike auf kennen.
Inzwischen ist sie Chef der Rezeption. Doch ganz glücklich
ist sie nicht.
Zermatt, was?
Im Jahr 2019 wandert Martina Zaletel dann erneut aus. Sie
bewirbt sich auf ein Stelleninserat in Zermatt. «Allerdings
wusste ich gar nicht, wo Zermatt eigentlich liegt», sagt sie
und lacht. Thomas Abgottspon, ihr künftiger Chef und Inhaber
des Resorts La Ginabelle, meldet sich bei ihr, lädt sie
zum Vorstellungsgespräch ein. «Ich dachte, die Reise vom
Salzburgerland nach Zermatt würde fünf Stunden dauern,
doch dann waren es zehn», sagt Zaletel. Dennoch nimmt
sie den Weg ins Oberwallis und zurück nach Österreich an
einem Tag auf sich. «Das Vorstellungsgespräch dauerte nur
ein paar Minuten, dann hatte ich den Job.» Ein paar Wochen
später zieht Martina Zaletel nach Zermatt.
Im «La Ginabelle» wird sie wieder Chef der Rezeption. Doch
dann kommt die Pandemie. Einige Angestellte sind in Kurzarbeit,
doch für Zaletel gibt es im Büro genug zu tun. Auch
weil das Hotel gerade umgebaut und erweitert wird. «Trotz
aller Einschränkungen wegen Corona hat Zermatt immer
funktioniert», sagt Zaletel. Das sei beeindruckend gewesen.
Wie eine Familie
Beeindruckt ist Zaletel auch von ihrem neuen Arbeitgeber.
«Die Familie Abgottspon hat mich wie ein Familienmitglied
aufgenommen», sagt sie. Das sei der Hauptgrund, warum
sie sich in Zermatt von Anfang an so wohlgefühlt habe. «Eigentlich
hatte ich nicht vor, länger in Zermatt zu bleiben,
doch das Arbeitsklima hier ist so toll, so herzlich, so familiär,
dass ich es mir nochmals überlegt habe.» Zaletel lacht. Genau
dieses familiäre Umfeld hat sie in Österreich vermisst.
«Auch meine Arbeit wird hier sehr geschätzt.» So ist Zaletel
drei Jahre nach ihrem Wechsel nach Zermatt nicht mehr
Chef der Rezeption, sondern inzwischen Direktionsassistentin
des Hotels. Sie kümmert sich um die Reservierung,
die Rechnungskontrollen, die Gästebetreuung, manchmal
auch Beschwerden – was eben so anfällt im administrativen
Bereich des Hotels. «Wenn es mich braucht, mache ich aber
natürlich auch noch Dienst an der Rezeption.» Zurück zu
den Wurzeln sozusagen.
Zaletel geniesst die Abwechslung, doch sie ist auch ehrlich.
«Es gibt die Zeiten, in denen es stressig ist, in denen man

viel Einsatz zeigen muss.» Aber so sei dies nun mal in der
Hotellerie, im Gastgewerbe. «Das macht aber auch den Reiz
unserer Berufe aus», ist sie überzeugt.
Umso besser ist es, dass es in Zermatt nicht an Ausgleichsmöglichkeiten
mangelt. «Bis auf das Meer gibt es hier alles,
was man braucht, um den Kopf frei zu bekommen», sagt Zaletel.
Sie selbst geht im Sommer wandern, im Winter fährt
sie Ski. Nur ans Bergsteigen hat sie sich noch nicht getraut.
«Auf dem Gipfel des Matterhorns werde ich wohl so schnell
nicht stehen.» Martina Zaletel hat aber das Breithorn auf
der Liste. Ein leichter Viertausender. «Damit ich auch etwas
Höhenluft schnuppern kann.» Die Slowenin wundert
es denn auch nicht, dass viele auswärtige Arbeitskräfte
langfristig in Zermatt bleiben. «Neben dem Freizeitangebot
werden im Dorf Freundschaften sehr gepflegt», sagt sie.
Einen solchen Zusammenhalt habe sie noch nirgendwo
erlebt. «In Zermatt habe ich bessere Freunde gefunden als
irgendwo sonst.» Zermatt sei für sie ein Lebensgefühl geworden.
«Deshalb bleibe ich hier», sagt Zaletel.
So hält sich auch das Heimweh in Grenzen. «Und wenn ich
Slowenien dann doch einmal vermisse, dann fahre ich halt
hin», sagt sie. Die Flexibilität ihres Arbeitgebers macht es
möglich. Ein Punkt, den Martina Zaletel zu schätzen weiss.
«Ich bin hier in Zermatt rundum glücklich», sagt sie. «Und
wer weiss, vielleicht mache ich ja eines Tages hier am Fuss
des Matterhorns den Traum vom eigenen Hotel wahr.»

ZALETEL’S NEW HOME
She had a good job as a lawyer, but always dreamed of having
her own hotel. Martina Zaletel came all the way from Austria to
Zermatt, and she’s here to stay.
Ever since she was a child, Martina Zaletel had a
dream: that one day she would run her very own hotel.
"The hotel and catering industries have fascinated
me for a long as I can remember", she said. Yet for
the time being, it remained only a dream.
When she left school, the now 40-year-old Slovenian
woman who grew up in Kranj, pursued a completely
different career path. She studied law and after her
studies she started working for a large legal firm. Yet,
the thoughts of running her own hotel never left her.
"I realised that law just wasn’t for me", said Zaletel.
Then, a good ten years ago, she took that risky leap
of faith. She left her job as a lawyer and started working
as a receptionist for a hotel chain in Slovenia. The
tourism industry in her home country was not really
developed and the wages were low. Zaletel wanted
more, so she moved away and travelled north. In
Austria, she got another job as a receptionist. "It was
hard in the beginning", she said. As well as starting
a new job, Zaletel also had to learn German and her
first setback was not long in coming. Zaletel received
her notice of termination; this shocked the former
lawyer. "But I never gave up and I moved on to my
next job as a receptionist".
Zaletel found herself quickly improving as she
learned the ropes of the hotel industry from the bottom
up. In no time at all she became the reception
manager. Yet, she still wasn’t completely satisfied.
Zermatt, what?
In 2019, Martina Zaletel migrated again. She applied
for a position in Zermatt. "I actually didn’t
even know where Zermatt was", she said laughing.
Thomas Abgottspon, her future boss, and owner of
the La Ginabelle Resort, contacted her and invited
her for an interview. "I thought the journey from Salzburg
to Zermatt would take around five hours, but
no, it took ten", said Zaletel. Nevertheless, she made
her way to Upper Valais and back to Austria all in
one day. "The interview only lasted a couple of minutes,
and I got the job!" A few weeks later Martina
Zaletel moved to Zermatt.
Again, she was promoted to reception manager at La
Ginabelle. Then, of course, the pandemic hit. Some
employees had their hours reduced, but there was
enough work in the office for Zaletel to do. This is
also because the hotel was in the process of being extended
and renovated. "Despite all of the coronavirus
restrictions, Zermatt was able to keep on going",
said Zaletel. That was impressive.
Like One Big Family
Zaletel is also impressed by her new employer. "The
Abgottspons took me in as part of their family", she
said. That was the main reason she felt so comfortable
in Zermatt from the very beginning. "I didn’t
actually plan to stay in Zermatt for much longer, but
the working environment here is so great, welcoming
and familiar, that I reconsidered." Zaletel laughed.
This familiar atmosphere was exactly what she
missed in Austria. "My work is also very much appreciated
here." So, three years after Zaletel’s move
to Zermatt, she is no longer the reception manager
but the assistant manager of the hotel. She is now
responsible for reservations, credit control, customer
service and sometimes also complaints – but only

those relating to the administrative side of the hotel. "If
needed, of course I will also help out at reception." Back to
the roots, so to speak.
Zaletel enjoys the change, but she is also honest. "There are
times which I find stressful, in which I have to put in so
much work." But this is what comes with any job in the hotel
and hospitality industry. "But that’s also what makes our
jobs so appealing," she exclaimed.
What makes it better, is that there isn’t a lack of opportunities
to enable a good work-life balance in Zermatt. "Apart
from the sea, everything you need to free your mind is right
here", said Zaletel. In summer she goes hiking, in winter
she goes skiing. The only thing she hasn’t dared to try yet is
mountain climbing. "You probably won’t find me standing
on the peak of the Matterhorn any time soon." However,
Breithorn is on Martina Zaletel’s bucket list. An easy 4,000
metre peak. "It’ll allow me to get a taste of the high altitude."
It is no surprise to the Slovenian, that so many foreign workers
stay long-term in Zermatt. "In addition to all the leisure
opportunities i find here, I've also made many great friends
in the village", she said. She has never experienced such togetherness
anywhere else. "I have found greater happiness
in Zermatt, than I have found anywhere else." Zermatt has
become a way of life for her. "And that’s why I’ll stay here",
says Zaletel.
This also keeps homesickness at bay. "And when I miss
Slovenia, I’ll just go back", she said. The flexibility of her employer
makes this possible. This is something Martina Zaletel
appreciates. "I’m very lucky here in Zermatt", she said. "And
who knows, perhaps one day at the foot of the Matterhorn,
my dream of having my own hotel will come true."

puis à Zermatt, d’où elle ne veut plus repartir.

Martina Zaletel grandit à Kranj en Slovaquie et
rêve dès son plus jeune âge d’avoir un jour son
propre hôtel. «L’hôtellerie et la restauration m’ont
toujours fascinée», dit-elle. Longtemps, son rêve
reste un rêve.
Sa scolarité terminée, la jeune femme aujourd’hui
âgée de 40 ans s’engage dans une tout autre voie.
Elle fait des études de droit et occupe ensuite un
poste dans une grande entreprise. Mais ses pensées
tournent constamment autour de l’hôtellerie. «J’ai
fait le constat que je n’étais pas faite pour le droit»,
confie Martina Zaletel.
Il y a une dizaine d’années, elle franchit enfin le pas.
Elle démissionne de son poste de juriste et trouve
un emploi de réceptionniste dans une chaîne hôtelière
en Slovaquie. Mais le tourisme dans son
pays d’origine est balbutiant et les salaires sont bas.
Martina Zaletel veut plus et poursuit donc sa route.
En direction du nord. En Autriche, elle trouve un
nouveau poste de réceptionniste. «Au début, c’était
dur», dit-elle. En effet, en plus de son travail, il lui
faut apprendre l’allemand. Et elle essuie un revers
sous forme de licenciement. C’est un choc pour
l’ancienne juriste. «Mais je n’ai pas baissé les bras
et trouvé une autre place à la réception.»
Martina Zaletel est de plus en plus à l’aise dans son
nouveau champ d’activité et apprend les ficelles du
monde hôtelier sur le tas. Le temps passe. Elle devient
cheffe de réception. Mais elle n’est pas encore
tout à fait heureuse.
Zermatt, quoi?
En 2019, Martina Zaletel refait ses valises. Elle
répond à une offre d’emploi à Zermatt. «Mais je
ne savais même pas où était Zermatt», revèle-telle
en riant. Thomas Abgottspon, son futur chef
et propriétaire du Resort La Ginabelle, lui répond
et l’invite à un entretien d’embauche. «J’ai pensé
que le voyage entre la région de Salzbourg et Zermatt
durerait cinq heures, mais c’était le double»,
raconte Martina Zaletel. Cependant, elle fera le
trajet de l’Autriche en Haut-Valais et retour dans la
même journée. «L’entretien d’embauche n’a duré
que quelques minutes et j’ai décroché le poste».
Quelques semaines plus tard, Martina Zaletel
s’installe à Zermatt.
À La Ginabelle, elle est à nouveau à la tête de la réception.
Puis, c’est la pandémie. Certains employés
doivent réduire leurs horaires de travail, mais Martina
Zaletel a suffisamment à faire au bureau. Notamment
parce que l’hôtel est en rénovation et sera
agrandi. «Malgré toutes les restrictions liées au
covid, Zermatt a toujours fonctionné», relate-elle,
impressionnée.
Comme une famille
Martina Zaletel est également impressionnée par
son nouvel employeur. «La famille Abgottspon m’a
accueillie comme un membre de la famille», ditelle.
C’est la raison principale pour laquelle elle
s’est sentie si bien dès son arrivée à Zermatt. «En
fait, je n’avais pas l’intention de rester très longtemps
à Zermatt, mais l’ambiance au travail est tellement
formidable, chaleureuse, familiale, que j’y
ai réfléchi à deux fois.» Martina Zaletel rit. C’est
exactement ce contexte familial qui lui manquait
en Autriche. «Mon travail est vraiment très apprécié
ici.» Ainsi, trois ans après son arrivée à Zermatt,
elle ne dirige plus la réception. Elle est désormais
assistante de direction de l’hôtel. Elle s’occupe des
réservations, du contrôle des factures, de l’accueil
des clients, parfois aussi des réclamations, en fait
de tout ce qui concerne l’administratif au sein d’un
hôtel. «Et si on a besoin de moi, je suis évidemment
aussi à la réception.» Retour aux fondamentaux en
quelque sorte.
Martina Zaletel aime quand ça bouge, tout en restant
honnête. «Il y a des périodes vraiment stressantes
durant lesquelles il faut faire preuve de
beaucoup d’engagement.» Il en est ainsi dans l’industrie
hôtelière. «C’est aussi ce qui fait le charme
de nos métiers», dit-elle convaincue.
Heureusement qu’il est facile de décompresser à
Zermatt. «Mis à part la mer, il y a tout ce qu’il faut
ici pour se vider la tête», dit Martina Zaletel. En
été, elle fait de la randonnée et en hiver du ski. Par
contre, elle ne s’est pas encore initiée à l’alpinisme.
«Ce n’est pas demain que tu me verras au sommet
du Cervin.» Elle envisage plutôt le Breithorn. Un
quatre mille facile d’accès. «Pour que je puisse un
peu humer l’air de là-haut.»
La Slovène n’est pas surprise que de nombreux
employés venant de loin restent longtemps à Zermatt.
«Outre l’offre de loisirs, il y a aussi les amitiés
qui s’entretiennent au village», dit-elle. Elle n’a encore
jamais vécu une telle cohésion. «Je n’ai jamais
éprouvé autant de bonheut qu’à Zermatt.» Pour
elle, Zermatt est désormais un art de vivre. «C’est
la raison pour laquelle je reste ici», ajoute-t-elle.
Ça lui permet de ne pas trop souffrir du mal du
pays. «Toutefois, quand la Slovénie me manque
trop, j’y retourne tout simplement». La souplesse
de son employeur le lui permet. Ce que Martina
Zaletel apprécie à sa juste valeur. «Je suis pleinement
heureuse à Zermatt», dit-elle. «Et qui sait,
peut-être qu’un jour je réaliserai mon rêve de posséder
mon propre hôtel ici, au pied du Cervin.»

Seit 2007 ist das Zermatt Unplugged aus der Destination
Zermatt-Matterhorn nicht mehr wegzudenken. Jedes
Jahr kommen begeisterte Fans, Musikerinnen und Musiker
sowie Newcomer nach Zermatt, um das Flair dieser
besonderen Tage am eigenen Leib mitzuerleben. Zermatt
Unplugged ist nicht nur eine Woche voller Musik. Es ist
eine Woche voller Lebensfreude, Freundschaften und Erlebnisse.
Wer nicht schon mal da war, kann sich dieses Gefühl
gar nicht vorstellen. So etwas wie dieses Musikfestival
muss man mindestens einmal im Leben mitbekommen
und gespürt haben.

Chasing Cancellara:
Zürich – Zermatt
Jedes Jahr heisst die Destination Zermatt-
Matterhorn das Eintagesrennen Chasing
Cancellara in Zermatt willkommen. Über 400
Frauen und Männer versuchen auf einer Strecke
von Zürich nach Zermatt den Velorennfahrer
Fabian Cancellara zu überholen. Seit
2018 wird die 290 Kilometer lange Strecke
jährlich von Radsportbegeisterten besucht
und gilt als das härteste Eintagesrennen der
Schweiz. Das Ziel des Rennens ist auf den
Oberen Matten in Zermatt, wo der Empfang
der Radfahrerinnen und Radfahrer ist.

Seit 2013 findet jährlich Ende August
von Freitagnachmittag bis Samstagabend
der Matterhorn Ultraks statt.
