So it is with the Lockport Resource Center, as the team continues to grow as Lockport’s community resource, and home to the longest continually operating thrift and resale shop. Though in only its sixth year of operation, the Resource Center continues to make a difference in the community, one person at a time. Store Director and Board Member Anne Magosky explains the store’s oldest tradition, a glass jar filled with Hershey Kisses “The store opened on Valentine’s Day 2012, so we passed out Kisses,” Magosky explains. “The jar was one of our first donations.” Another tradition is the perpetual Bag Sale. What started as a means to reduce seasonal overstock has become a mainstay of the Resource Center’s strategy. Store volunteer Kit Lindblom explained that the idea of paying a single price for a bag and being able to shop until the bag is full can ease the mind of customers with limited resources. “We don’t need to worry about the price of each individual item and can focus on what the client’s need is,” Lindblom said. The recent addition of the Pass It On Insider bag has taken the mission to another level. The reusable bags bear the Lockport Resource Center logo, as well as the store tagline #passiton. The bag is purchased for $5 and can be filled with nearly anything in the store. Each refill is also $5. Store manager Mary Wehle explained, “With our focus on reusing and repurposing, it only made sense to have a reusable bag.” On special sale days, the bags can be refilled at a discounted price. Of course, the holiday season is filled with tradition. Store volunteer and Board President Cean Magosky has started his own traditions of Black Friday and Boxing Day. During Black Friday, the Santa Bag Challenge is offered to any shopper and features filling a 25-gallon trash bag for only $25. Boxing Day is celebrated the day after Christmas, and shoppers are invited to bring a box to fill for a $5 donation. For those who do not have a box, the store usually has plenty. Perhaps the newest tradition is the Transformation Scholarship. Any Lockport resident can apply for any educational need. Barb Lindblom sits on the Scholarship Committee and explained that previous recipients have used this scholarship for college, junior college and even Oasis tuition. “The goal is to provide the recipient and their family an opportunity to transform their life, change the story,” Lindblom said. “We focus on people and families trying to work their way to success and out of the cycle of hopelessness.” Proceeds from the Pass It On Thrift Shop are used to fund the many missions of the Lockport Resource Center, including the Transformation Scholarship, Emergency Relief Loans and the shop itself as a mission. Magosky explained, “We keep our prices low as a way to help on the front lines of the community. So many of our clients are starting or rebuilding their lives, and having a place to shop and feel part of the community is important.
