Hollingworth Candies
makes life a little sweeter
In 1982 — with some
chocolate, pecans, butter
and a special family recipe
— Margaret Carlson began
making toffee 1 pound
at a time on her kitchen
stove in Homer Township.
She started selling her
candy at small craft shows,
and soon needed to start
taking orders for friends
and family as word spread
about the quality and
freshness of her product.
Her husband, Chester, retired
and began making the
toffee with her.
Before long, Margaret’s
signature toffee was
in high demand. In 1993,
her daughter Wendy joined
them and continues the tradition
now, bringing Hollingworth
Candies home
to happy customers.
Hollingworth Candies
has expanded to a larger
facility in Lockport to
make the handcrafted toffee
and candies, and it also
holds their storefront.
Though toffee remains
Hollingworth’s most popular
seller, the company
also makes cashew brittle,
Chesters, gourmet caramel
apples, sea salt toffee, sea
salt caramels, chocolatedipped
strawberries and
much more.
Margaret Carlson has
added her own line of
molded chocolates, called
Maggie’s Creations. Each
one is hand-painted with
colored chocolate and
molded into delicious, artful,
chocolate creations.
Hollingworth Candies
has many ideas for corporate
gifts, as well.
Customers can shop online
24 hours a day, seven
days a week, or stop in the
Lockport store. The Holiday
Hours are 9 a.m.-7
p.m. Monday-Friday; 9
a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; and
11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
The hours are 9 a.m.-2
p.m. on Christmas Eve and
New Year’s Eve. Closed
Dec. 25 and 26, and closed
Jan. 1 and 2.

Dispelling the myth of the
spring selling season
Everyone has probably heard it before,
“Spring is the best time to sell a home.”
It is a common misconception and, as a
result, we see fewer homes being listed in
the winter and then a flood of inventory in
the spring.
If one looks at this from a supply and
demand standpoint, this actually creates a
“buyer’s market” in the spring, when inventory
goes up, and a “seller’s market”
in the winter, when supply goes down.
The great news is that there always are
people who need to buy a home — no
matter what time of year it is. In fact, last
year more than 70 homes went under contract
in Homer Glen between November
and February. The Dan Kenney Group
at Keller Williams Preferred Realty has
117 homes actively listed in Homer Glen
(down 26 percent from this same time last
year). Chances are most of these homes
will be under contract before Valentine’s
Day.
The other advantage of listing now is
that in the spring buyers have so many options
from which to choose that they tend
to take their time looking for a home. This
means a home will probably sit on the
market a little longer than normal.
In the winter, when inventory is low,
buyers know that they need to move
quickly to avoid losing out.
Outside of that, anyone who puts on
their hat, gloves, boots and winter coat
and trudges out into the snow to look at
houses is not just kicking tires. They need
to buy a home.
