Tinley’s Pop’s Italian Beef & Sausage ready for the holidays<br />

The Pop’s Italian Beef &<br />

Sausage Tinley Park location<br />

has been making the<br />

holidays special with its<br />

delicious catering offerings<br />

since 2009. Focusing<br />

on high quality food with<br />

affordable prices, Pop’s be<br />

a part of everyone’s celebrations<br />

this season.<br />

“Christmas Eve is our<br />

busiest day of the year,”<br />

owner Burke Matyas said.<br />

“People especially love<br />

our beef and chicken for<br />

their holiday gatherings.<br />

“Every 15 minutes, we<br />

are cooking 120 pieces of<br />

chicken, so call early for a<br />

prime spot. Some people<br />

who have made our food<br />

a tradition are calling a<br />

month in advance every<br />

year.”<br />

Pop’s famous chicken is<br />

pressure-cooked to make<br />

it more moist and delicious,<br />

which is why it is so<br />

popular among customers.<br />

Also, all the beef is cooked<br />

and sliced daily and has<br />

been since the first Pop’s<br />

opened its doors in Palos<br />

Heights in 1980.<br />

Pop’s offers a variety of<br />

catering packages which<br />

include Italian beef, Italian<br />

sausage, chicken, baked<br />

mostaccioli, and sausage<br />

and meatball trays.<br />

Delicious catering services<br />

are not all Pop’s is<br />

known for. Pop’s in Tinley<br />

Park also is part of the<br />

hot lunch program for area<br />

schools, and offers a fundraising<br />

program that gives<br />

back 20 percent of its profits<br />

that day to the participating<br />

nonprofit group.<br />

Pop’s daily specials<br />

and text messaging promotions<br />

also make Pop’s<br />

in Tinley Park a popular<br />

lunch destination. At 9:30<br />

a.m. every Monday, a text<br />

message promotion is sent<br />

to 26,000 phone numbers<br />

of people who opted into<br />

the program by texting the<br />

word POPS (in all capital<br />

letters) to 95577. The specials<br />

are good for Monday<br />

and Tuesday, and generally<br />

rotate between the<br />

same popular offerings.<br />

The menu items include;<br />

cheeseburger ($2.25), beef<br />

sandwich ($3.50), Italian<br />

sausage sandwich ($2.99),<br />

gyros sandwich ($3.50),<br />

breaded steak sandwich<br />

($2.99), and all-beef hot<br />

dog ($2.25).<br />

There are always two<br />

different specials every<br />

day of the week. Also,<br />

every order comes with a<br />

brightly colored coupon<br />

for a customer’s next visit.<br />

For the most part, all<br />

Pop’s stores offer the<br />

same menu, but at Tinley<br />

Park people can also order<br />

a homemade sloppy<br />

Joe, or choose from two<br />

homemade soups; cream<br />

of chicken with rice, and<br />

vegetable beef barley.<br />

They are very popular with<br />

regulars and keep people<br />

coming back again and<br />

again.<br />

At Pop’s, customers are<br />

treated as more than a just<br />

a customer; they are treated<br />

as a friend.<br />

“We have so many regulars<br />

here, and I think it’s<br />

because we give out great<br />

customer service,” Matyas<br />

said. “We like to talk<br />

and laugh with our regulars<br />

when they walk in the<br />

door, really make them<br />

feel welcome.<br />

“We have some regulars<br />

that come here so often,<br />

as soon as they walk in<br />

the door I’m already calling<br />

their order out to the<br />

kitchen before the customer<br />

even makes it up to the<br />

counter.”<br />

And it’s not just the customers<br />

that are loyal.<br />

“Most of our employees<br />

have been here a long<br />

time, so we can really<br />

keep up the consistency,”<br />

Matyas said. “I have one<br />

employee that’s been with<br />

the Pop’s franchise for 20<br />

years, and another one<br />

that’s been with me since<br />

Day 1 in Tinley Park.”<br />
