resistance not <strong>on</strong>ly to <strong>the</strong> French invasi<strong>on</strong>s (1808) 22 but also during <strong>the</strong><br />

Portuguese civil war (1832/1834), <strong>of</strong> promoting and defending <strong>the</strong> liberal cause.<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>city</str<strong>on</strong>g> was in 1833 under siege <strong>of</strong> an absolutist guerrilla, commanded by José<br />

Joaquim de Sousa Reis, named O Remexido 23 . Very active in <strong>the</strong> Algarve<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>between</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1836 and 1840 and was str<strong>on</strong>gly repressed by <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>city</str<strong>on</strong>g> authorities 24 .<br />

Only from <strong>the</strong> late 18th century, but especially in <strong>the</strong> 19th century, Lagos<br />

would come to know a whiff <strong>of</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic recovery with <strong>the</strong> canned fish<br />

industries and factories. These activities were, in large part due to <strong>the</strong> arrival<br />

<strong>of</strong> foreign industrials from Greece, Italy and France and came to enhance <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> registered fishing boats and shipyards in <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>city</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Today is fully<br />

extinguished. This activities and industries were determinant for <strong>the</strong> slow<br />

rec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>city</str<strong>on</strong>g> and also to <strong>the</strong> urban design. They brought a new<br />

insight not <strong>on</strong>ly for Lagos but also for <strong>the</strong> Algarve Regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
