Rodney Hughey<br />

Assistant Coach<br />

Defensive Backs<br />

Strength Coach<br />

Rodney Hughey is in his second season coaching the<br />

Blue Bears. Hughey is in charge <strong>of</strong> the defensive backs<br />

and is also the team’s strength and conditioning coach.<br />

Hughey comes to Livingstone from Northern Iowa<br />

Community <strong>College</strong> where he worked as an assistant head<br />

coach and defensive coordinator. While at Northern Iowa,<br />

Hughey coached the 2008 defense to a top-10 ranking in<br />

total defense as well as the top-ranked defense in the country<br />

in pass effi ciency.<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> Hughey’s four starting defensive backs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

2008 season went on to transfer to Division I schools to<br />

continue their football careers. Based on his performance<br />

as a coach for Northern Iowa, Hughey was invited to coach<br />

the defensive backs in the NAIA All-Star Game in Houston,<br />

Texas in the spring <strong>of</strong> 2009.<br />

Prior to Northern Iowa, Hughey worked at Concord<br />

University as a defensive backs coach.<br />

Hughey graduated from Concord University in 2007<br />

with a degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Special<br />

Education. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Behavior<br />

Science with an emphasis in Counseling from Concord<br />

University.<br />

Hughey played for three seasons as a defensive back<br />

at Concord which competed in the West Virginia Intercollegiate<br />

Athletic Conference (WVIAC). Hughey was<br />

a three-time All-Conference selection in 2004, 2005 and<br />

2006. Hughey was also a First Team All-American in<br />

2006. He was also named as the 2005 and 2006 team’s<br />

most valuable defensive MVP and the team’s captain in<br />

2006.<br />

In January <strong>of</strong> 2007, Hughey was selecteed to take part<br />

in teh Cactus Bowl in Platte City, Missouri which is the<br />

Division II All-Star Game. Hughey garnered Most Valuable<br />

Player recognition for his performance.<br />

After college, Hughey played pr<strong>of</strong>essionally in the<br />

arena league for the Columbis Destroyers and played in the<br />

2007 Arena Bowl Championship in New Orleans, LA.<br />

Hughey has a son, Rashaun, who is three years old.<br />

Assistant Coaches<br />

Gilbert Wiggins<br />

Linebackers<br />

First Season • Shaw University<br />

Gilbert Wiggins is starting his third stint as a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the Blue Bear coaching staff . Most recently, Wiggins worked<br />

as outside linebackers coach at NC Central University for<br />

four years.<br />

Wiggins’ fi rst time with the Blue Bears started in 1993,<br />

running through the 2000 season. He worked as the defensive<br />

backs coach and defensive coordinator. In 1997, he was<br />

awarded the NCAA Defensive Coordinator <strong>of</strong> the Year Award<br />

by the American <strong>Football</strong> Quarterly.<br />

While leading the defense, the Blue Bears had the secondranked<br />

secondary in 1997 and ranked ninth in 1998. His<br />

defense was fi rst in the nation in 1997 and he produced<br />

at least one All-CIAA defensive back for seven consecutive<br />

years.<br />

Wiggins played football from 1977-1979 at Elizabeth City<br />

State University at the defensive back position. He earned<br />

his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Shaw University.<br />

Wiggins signed as a free agent with the NFL’s Cleveland<br />

Browns in 1979 but his career was cut short due to illness.<br />

Reginald Smith<br />

Wide Receivers<br />

First Season • NC Central University<br />

Reginald Smith enters his fi rst season <strong>of</strong> his second stint<br />

coaching with the Blue Bears and will be responsible for the<br />

wide receivers.<br />

Smith most recently coached at the Victory Christian Center<br />

School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Smith worked with<br />

the receivers, special teams and quarterbacks.<br />

Smith has also spent a large amount <strong>of</strong> time coaching in<br />

various levels <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional football. Smith has coached in<br />

the Intense <strong>Football</strong> League, the American Indoor <strong>Football</strong><br />

League, the Arena <strong>Football</strong> League and the International<br />

<strong>Football</strong> League. Smith was inducted into the Arena <strong>Football</strong><br />

League Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame in June <strong>of</strong> 2002.<br />

In addition to his pr<strong>of</strong>essional football experience, Smith<br />

has also worked at the University <strong>of</strong> the District <strong>of</strong> Columbia,<br />

Johnson C. Smith University, North Carolina Central University,<br />

Livingstone <strong>College</strong> and Morris Brown <strong>College</strong>.<br />

Smith received his Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Art’s Degree in History and<br />

Sociology from North Carolina Central University in 1978.<br />
