Johnny Ray Miller - Class <strong>of</strong> 2002<br />
Miller was a 1977 graduate and a native <strong>of</strong> Wadesboro,<br />
NC. He was the team’s captain from 1974-76 and was also a<br />
three-time Defensive Lineman <strong>of</strong> the Year. In 1975 and 1976<br />
Miller was an All-CIAA performer and a Black <strong>College</strong> Sports<br />
All-American. He was named to the Associated Press All-<br />
American Team and the Pittsburgh Courier All-American Team in<br />
1976. Miller was considered as one <strong>of</strong> the top candidates for the<br />
Teague Award in 1976 for North Carolina’s top amateur athlete <strong>of</strong><br />
the year award. Miller jonied the ranks <strong>of</strong> the National <strong>Football</strong><br />
League as a 1977 draftee for the San Francisco 49ers. He ended<br />
his fi ve-year pr<strong>of</strong>essional career with the Philadelphia Eagles and<br />
became and administrator with the city <strong>of</strong> San Francisco.<br />
Dorsey Montgomery, Sr. - Class <strong>of</strong> 2006<br />
Montgomery was a two-year letterman in football until<br />
an injury ended his playing career. Due to the injury, he became<br />
a student assistant under Baxter Holman and Fletcher Jones.<br />
Montgomery graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science<br />
Degree in Business Administration. He is a founding member and<br />
past President <strong>of</strong> the Livingstone Blue Bears Club. He received<br />
the Life Membership Award in November <strong>of</strong> 2005. Dorsey is also<br />
a life Member <strong>of</strong> the Livingstone National Alumni Association.<br />
Montgomery is the 2001 recipient <strong>of</strong> the Fletcher Jones Distinguished<br />
Service Award for outstanding service to Livingstone’s<br />
Athletics.<br />
Produs Scott Perkins - Class <strong>of</strong> 2006<br />
Perkins was a member <strong>of</strong> the nationally recognized 1969<br />
football team. He graduated with a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science Degree<br />
in Business Education. Perkins became one <strong>of</strong> the Blue Bears<br />
fi rst players to be drafted into the National <strong>Football</strong> League. He<br />
was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 16th round. After<br />
the exhibition season with the 49ers, Perkins played a year with<br />
the Washington Redskins Farm Team in the East Coast <strong>Football</strong><br />
League.<br />
Clifford A. Phifer - Class <strong>of</strong> 2004<br />
Phifer is a native <strong>of</strong> Kannapolis, NC. Phifer entered<br />
Livingstone in 1958 and participated in football and track &fi eld.<br />
In football, Phifer earned Second Team All-EIAC Honors in<br />
1959. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the 1960 EIAC football championship<br />
team. He was ranked nationally as a punter, and he received<br />
All-EIAC honors. During the 1961-62 season, Clifford Phifer<br />
was named a co-captain for the Blue Bears. In the sport <strong>of</strong> track<br />
& fi eld, Phifer had a stellar performance at the 1960 and 1962<br />
Journal & Time Norfolk Relays and South Carolina Relays.<br />
Twice during his collegiate career at Livingstone, he was named<br />
the Sidney Greene Memorial Award Winner as the institution’s<br />
most outstanding athlete in 1961 and in 1962.<br />

Dr. William Primus - Class <strong>of</strong> 2009<br />
Primus was a graduate <strong>of</strong> the class <strong>of</strong> 1963. Primus<br />
played a multitude <strong>of</strong> positions for the Blue Bear football team<br />
including special teams, defensive back, wide receiver and running<br />
back. Primus also participated on the Livingstone track<br />
team.<br />
Dr. David Shinholster - Class <strong>of</strong> 2004<br />
Shinholster is a native <strong>of</strong> Concord, North Carolina<br />
where he graduated with honors from Logan High School in<br />
1950. Dr. David Shinholster enrolled at Livingstone in 1954-<br />
1955 and attained noteworthy success in athletics. During his<br />
fi rst year, he participated in football and basketball, then concentrated<br />
on football for his last two years. Shinholster played three<br />
years under Head Coach Edward L. Mitchell; he was selected to<br />
the All-EIAC Team in football for his three years <strong>of</strong> participation.<br />
In 1955, Shinholster was the leading rusher in 1956; awarded the<br />
Sidney Green Memorial Award ; and he was co-captain <strong>of</strong> the<br />
football team in 1957 along with James “Penny” Bridges.<br />
Andrew Spencer Smith - Class <strong>of</strong> 2008<br />
Smith was a 1967 graduate <strong>of</strong> Livingstone with a degree<br />
in Mathematics. Smith started on the Blue Bear football team in<br />
1962 in Livingstone’s inaugural season in the CIAA. Smith also<br />
had a tryout with the New York Jets <strong>of</strong> the American <strong>Football</strong><br />
League in 1965 during a hiatus from college.<br />
Johnny Stoutamire - Class <strong>of</strong> 2003<br />
Stoutamire, a 1997 alumnus, is a native <strong>of</strong> Clemmons,<br />
NC. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration<br />
from Livingstone. While in school, Stoutamire played football,<br />
basketball and ran track. Stoutamire received the Rookie<br />
Defensive Player <strong>of</strong> the Year Award in 1974, the Defensive Back<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Year Award in 1975 and was named to the All-CIAA Team,<br />
the All-District 26 NAIA Team and the Pittsburgh Courier All-<br />
American Team in 1976. In 1977, Stoutamire was again named<br />
to the All-CIAA Team, the All-CIAA Academic Team, the Pittsburgh<br />
Courier All-American Team, the Mutual Black Network<br />
All-American Team and the Jet Magazine All-American Team.<br />
In 1978 Stoutamire signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Bills.<br />
Sylvester Sutton - Class <strong>of</strong> 2003<br />
Sutton, a football inductee and 1970 graduate, is a native<br />
<strong>of</strong> Edenton, NC. In his freshman year, Sutton became a part <strong>of</strong><br />
Livingstone’s most noted passing and receiving trio along with<br />
Alfred Tyler and Romus Jefferies. Sutton was the top-ranked<br />
receiver in the CIAA in receiving yardage in 1966 and ranked<br />
10th in the nation among small college teams. In 1967, Sutton<br />
was named to the Ebony <strong>College</strong> Scorebard All-American Team<br />
and the All-CIAA Second Team. Sutton was selected as the team<br />
captain for his junior and senior seasons. Sutton ended his career<br />
at Livingstone with 125 receptions, 1945 receiving yards and 20<br />
touchdowns. After at stint with the Atlanta Falcons, Sutton was<br />
later drafted into the US Army and spent two years in the military.<br />
