GAME 9 • OCTOBER 23 • FAYETTEVILLE, NC
Fayetteville State 59
Livingstone 6
FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State Broncos scored 47 unanswered points
Saturday to defeat the Livingstone Blue Bears 59-6 in CIAA football action.
Livingstone received the opening kickoff after Fayetteville won the toss and deferred to
the second half. The opening drive for the Blue Bears stalled and Livingstone was forced
to punt. The punt by freshman Logan Haynes was blocked and Fayetteville took over at the
26-yard line. After seven plays and moving 20 yards, the Broncos kicked a 23-yard fi eld
goal to go up 3-0.
The ensuing drive for the Blue Bears looked as though it was going to end after only
three plays, but a well-executed fake punt by Livingstone gave the Blue Bears a fi rst down.
The momentum from the successful fake punt was short-lived as Livingstone was again
forced to punt with 3:14 left in the fi rst quarter. The Broncos were able to block their
second punt of the game and started on the 34-yard line. Three plays after the blocked punt
the Broncos connected on a 20-yard passing touchdown for a 10-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter the Broncos increased their lead to 17-0 on a 15-yard passing
touchdown after the Bronco defense intercepted a Levon Stanley pass. Livingstone tried to
turn the tides on the ensuing drive. On the fourth play from scrimmage Stanley connected
with Omar McFadden on a crossing pattern in the middle of the fi eld that went for 58 yards
for a touchdown. It was the fi rst touchdown for Livingstone since September 25
th and the
longest play from scrimmage this season. The Blue Bears faked the extra point and the
passing attempt failed. Fayetteville State led 17-6.
The two teams traded punts on their next respective possessions. Fayetteville was
again forced to punt with 2:53 left in the fi rst half. The punt bounced around the 10-yard
line and freshman Franklin Evans tried to fi eld the ball on the hop and misplayed it. The
Broncos recovered the muffed punt in the endzone for a touchdown and a 24-6 lead. With
58 seconds left in the half Fayetteville missed a 48-yard fi eld goal, but still took a 24-6 lead
into the locker room at halftime.
Fayetteville got the opening kick of the second half, but it was Livingstone that tried to
pull back some momentum. With 11:18 left in the third quarter Fayetteville attempted a
36-yard fi eld goal that was blocked by junior Devonta Harmon. The Blue Bears took over,
but any momentum was scratched later in the drive when a Stanley pitched the ball behind
running back Terrill Gourdine for a fumble that was recovered by the Broncos. Fayetteville
scored on a 17-yard run off the turnover with 4:40 left in the third quarter to go up 31-6.
Less than a minute later on the ensuing drive for Livingstone the Broncos blocked
their third punt of the game. This punt was returned 12 yards for a touchdown and a 38-6
Fayetteville lead. Fayetteville increased its lead to 45-6 with 2:01 left in the third quarter
on a one-yard touchdown run that was set up off an interception of Stanley.
Livingstone punted on its fi rst possession of the fourth quarter and Fayetteville
capitalized with a 45-yard touchdown run with 12:11 left in the contest to go up 52-6. The
ensuing kickoff was fumbled by the Blue Bears and recovered by the Broncos. Fayetteville
capitalized on the fi fth Blue Bear turnover of the contest with a touchdown run with 9:31
remaining in the contest to go up 59-6, which resulted in the fi nal score of the game.
GAME 10 • OCTOBER 30 • SALISBURY, NC
St. Augustine’s 33
Livingstone 0
SALISBURY, NC – Livingstone held the CIAA Southern Division leader St.
Augustine’s scoreless in the fi rst half Saturday, but turnovers proved costly in the
second half as the Falcons rallied to defeat the Blue Bears 33-0 in the fi nal home
game of the 2010 season for the Blue Bears.
St. Augustine’s came in as the top rushing team in the CIAA and Walter
Sanders came in as the second-leading rusher in the nation and the Blue Bear
defense, shut down the rushing attack of the Falcons in the fi rst half. Sanders had
27 yards on the ground and the Falcons had only 38 for the fi rst half.
The Livingstone defense forced the Falcons into four punts and one turnover
on downs in the fi rst half and kept the Falcons out of the end zone towards the
end of the fi rst half as St. Augustine’s was driving for a late score.
Despite the positive play of the Blue Bear defense in the fi rst half, the
Livingstone offense was unable to get anything going. In the fi rst half, the Blue
Bears managed only 52 yards of total offense, with 42 coming on the ground and
10 coming via the pass.
Livingstone looked to capitalize on its momentum from the fi rst half as
it received the opening kick of the second stanza. On the fi rst play from
scrimmage of the second half, quarterback Levon Stanley fumbled and the ball
was recovered by St. Augustine’s on the 37 yard line. On the third play St.
Augustine’s quarterback Teddy Bacote connected with Tyrone Laughinghouse for
a 33-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 Falcon lead.
The next possession for Livingstone ended after only two plays as Stanley was
intercepted on the 35 yard line and the pick was returned for a touchdown and a
14-0 St. Augustine’s edge. After the next Blue Bear possession ended after three
plays and a punt, St. Augustine’s added a 32-yard fi eld goal for a 17-0 lead.
To start the fourth quarter the Blue Bears had another turnover. Kevin Shelf
caught a pass at the 38 yard line, but the hit jarred the ball loose and the Falcons
recovered. Despite the turnover, the Blue Bears got the ball back two plays
later when Devonta Harmon forced a fumble after a pass completion and Martez
Earles recovered the fumble.
The offense again was unable to capitalize on the defensive play as three
straight pass attempts fell incomplete and the Blue Bears were forced to punt.
St. Augustine’s went up 20-0 on a 40-yard fi eld goal after a nine-play, 26-yard
drive. The next drive for Livingstone ended after two plays when Curtis Edens
fumbled and the ball was recovered by the Falcons. Walter Sanders rushed on
two plays straight and got into the endzone on the second for a 26-0 Falcon lead.
St. Augustine’s added one more touchdown with just over fi ve minutes to go to
reach the fi nal score of 33-0.
