Competition venue: Olympic Stadium
The centrepiece of the new Olympic Park, the Olympic Stadium will host the track
and field events of the Athletics competition. This state-of-the-art venue will have a
gross capacity of 80,000 during London 2012, and will also host the Opening
and Closing Ceremonies. The Olympic Stadium is located in the south of the
Olympic Park on an island site, surrounded by waterways on three sides.
Spectators will reach the venue via five bridges that link the site to the
surrounding area.

Venue access
General access to the Olympic Park is via the east Pedestrian Screening Area
(PSA) and the southern PSA. Access to the Stadium by foot is via the common
domain. Access to the Stadium via transport is from the Transport Mall at the
Paralympic Village only: athletes and team management will be taken to the
Warm-up Venue and will then be required to make their way through the
connecting tunnel to the Stadium.
Athlete load zones are located at the Paralympic Village and the Warm-up Venue
only. Athletes, team management and spectating athletes will travel on the same
transport, but on competition days spectating athletes will not be able to access
the Warm-up Venue. For transport information, see p91.
Field of play
The field of play for the Athletics competition at the Olympic Stadium will contain
the following:
– Nine-lane, 400m oval track and nine-lane straight track with Mondotrack FTX
track surface.
– Two High Jump landing areas.
– Four Long Jump/Triple Jump pits.
– Two Discus Throw circles.
– Two Javelin Throw runways.
– Four Shot Put circles.
Seated throws will all be from the concrete circles. These will be located in
accordance with the needs of the timetable.
