Competition venue: Olympic Stadium<br />
The centrepiece of the new Olympic Park, the Olympic Stadium will host the track<br />
and field events of the <strong>Athletics</strong> competition. This state-of-the-art venue will have a<br />
gross capacity of 80,000 during <strong>London</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, and will also host the Opening<br />
and Closing Ceremonies. The Olympic Stadium is located in the south of the<br />
Olympic Park on an island site, surrounded by waterways on three sides.<br />
Spectators will reach the venue via five bridges that link the site to the<br />
surrounding area.<br />

Venue access<br />
General access to the Olympic Park is via the east Pedestrian Screening Area<br />
(PSA) and the southern PSA. Access to the Stadium by foot is via the common<br />
domain. Access to the Stadium via transport is from the Transport Mall at the<br />
Paralympic Village only: athletes and team management will be taken to the<br />
Warm-up Venue and will then be required to make their way through the<br />
connecting tunnel to the Stadium.<br />
Athlete load zones are located at the Paralympic Village and the Warm-up Venue<br />
only. Athletes, team management and spectating athletes will travel on the same<br />
transport, but on competition days spectating athletes will not be able to access<br />
the Warm-up Venue. For transport information, see p91.<br />
Field of play<br />
The field of play for the <strong>Athletics</strong> competition at the Olympic Stadium will contain<br />
the following:<br />
– Nine-lane, 400m oval track and nine-lane straight track with Mondotrack FTX<br />
track surface.<br />
– Two High Jump landing areas.<br />
– Four Long Jump/Triple Jump pits.<br />
– Two Discus Throw circles.<br />
– Two Javelin Throw runways.<br />
– Four Shot Put circles.<br />
Seated throws will all be from the concrete circles. These will be located in<br />
accordance with the needs of the timetable.<br />
