BA (HONS) INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND<br />
BA (HONS) INTERNATIONAL EVENTS MANAGEMENT<br />
WITH INTEGRATED FOUNDATION<br />
Additional English This module provides additional support in<br />
English, partly to enhance understanding - especially of technical<br />
terms - and partly to improve accuracy in reading, listening,<br />
speaking and writing.You will receive appropriate support from an<br />
English language, or business English specialist. Cl<strong>as</strong>s sessions focus<br />
on practising and strengthening business and academic English<br />
language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a business<br />
English context.This module is suited to students who are having<br />
difficulty in taking lecture notes in English, understanding <strong>as</strong>sessment<br />
questions and t<strong>as</strong>ks, or writing answers.<br />
<strong>Business</strong> Study Skills This module will help you to develop the skills<br />
that will underpin your undergraduate studies.Through practical<br />
exercises you will learn how to organise your time effectively, analyse<br />
<strong>as</strong>signment questions, research using online and printed sources, write<br />
up <strong>as</strong>signments with correct referencing, design and deliver effective<br />
presentations and develop the skills required for working in teams.<br />
Foundations of Economics This module introduces the way<br />
economies operate.You will explore b<strong>as</strong>ic economic concepts,<br />
and learn about both the macroeconomic and microeconomic<br />
environment in which a business functions.You will gain insight into<br />
how markets work and the role of the central bank in a financial<br />
system, and look at how different countries work under different<br />
economic systems.<br />
Foundations of Finance and Accounting This module offers a broad<br />
introduction to finance and accounting and introduces the key<br />
concepts and processes of finance.You will learn to prepare and<br />
interpret b<strong>as</strong>ic accounting statements.<strong>The</strong> nature and purpose of the<br />
three main financial statements, and the accounting conventions used<br />
in their construction, are explored.You will gain the skills to calculate<br />
and interpret simple ratios using financial statement information.You<br />
will learn how financial decisions are related to business strategy.<br />
Foundations of International Events Management This module is for<br />
students intending to continue to the BA (Hons) International Events<br />
Management. It introduces the use of events in modern-day commerce<br />
and the international events management industry.You will gain an<br />
overview of event logistics, marketing, human resource management<br />
and budgeting.You will consider the role of events and factors in their<br />
successful delivery, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> gaining a wider understanding of the<br />
impact of events beyond the event organiser.<br />
Foundations of International Relations This module creates a b<strong>as</strong>ic<br />
understanding of some of the fundamental issues in the world and<br />
the approach of International Relations (IR) in trying to describe and<br />
analyse their complexities.You will learn about the theories of IR,<br />
and explore topics such <strong>as</strong> human rights, international law, the role<br />
of the state, peace and war, the global economy and global crises.<br />
On completing this module, you will have a strong perspective on<br />
the key issues confronting business organisations within the world of<br />
international politics and the global economy.<br />
Foundations of Language and Culture This module is for students<br />
intending to continue to the BA (Hons) International <strong>Business</strong>.<br />
Learning a language incre<strong>as</strong>es communicative competence, and helps<br />
you to develop a range of other skills and competencies, from linguistic<br />
skills to socio-linguistic, cognitive and semantic skills.You will learn<br />
one language of which you have no prior knowledge, from a choice<br />
of Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or<br />
Spanish.<strong>The</strong> module is for beginners, and introduces both the language<br />
and the societies where it is spoken.<br />
Foundations of Marketing This module introduces the b<strong>as</strong>ic<br />
knowledge of marketing you will need to further your studies in any<br />
business-related degree programme. <strong>Business</strong>es must adapt in order to<br />
survive, and it is the role of marketing to identify and respond to new<br />
opportunities.This module will give you a b<strong>as</strong>ic understanding of the<br />
core concepts of marketing and their application to real-life c<strong>as</strong>es.You<br />
will gain confidence in recognising and analysing marketing situations,<br />
and interpreting results.<br />
Foundations of Operations Management This module introduces a<br />
crucial b<strong>as</strong>ic function of business – putting plans into action to achieve<br />
a physical result.You will look at production and distribution, and<br />
the systems and resources involved.Various methods for managing<br />
operations used to achieve effectiveness and efficiency, or enhance<br />
quality, are examined.You will also gain hands-on experience in working<br />
with charts and network diagrams aimed at reducing complex t<strong>as</strong>ks<br />
to a series of component ph<strong>as</strong>es, and other techniques essential for<br />
managing operations effectively.<br />
Identity and Culture This module encourages you to reflect on your<br />
own identity and the variety of cultures that co-exist in the world.<br />
It encourages active, conscious creative thinking and guides you to<br />
apply creativity to formulate your own theories and opinions <strong>as</strong> well<br />
<strong>as</strong> share and reflect your observations within the group.You will look<br />
at similarities and differences between cultures and develop your own<br />
social skills. Ultimately the module will empower you to be accountable<br />
for your identity and recognise the value of cross-cultural collaboration<br />
to reach creative solutions.<br />
Mathematical and Quantitative Techniques in <strong>Business</strong> This module<br />
will give you the confidence to apply quantitative techniques in solving<br />
business problems. Quantitative techniques aim to minimise risk and<br />
mitigate the effects of uncertainty, thus aiding the decision-making<br />
process and allowing business objectives to be attained. <strong>Business</strong>es<br />
often have to make decisions on the efficient allocation of scarce<br />
resources. Mathematical solutions are ideal for solving such problems,<br />
which incre<strong>as</strong>ingly for multinational organisations involve global<br />
environmental issues.<br />
People, Environment and <strong>Business</strong> This module aims to raise<br />
awareness of how consumer behaviour and globalisation affect the<br />
availability of resources, and the role of business in encouraging<br />
sustainable development.You will gain an overview of some of<br />
the major environmental cycles and events, and learn to evaluate<br />
business activities in relation to the natural environment and issues<br />
of sustainability.You will acquire b<strong>as</strong>ic knowledge of environmental<br />
management in service and manufacturing industries, and an overview<br />
of environmental management and policy.
