OUR PHILOSOPHY 

The Brandywine Y believes in providing comprehensive 

camp programs, which foster the social, cultural, physical 

and emotional development of children of all ages. All 

activities reflect the character values of caring, honesty 

respect and responsibility. We create an opportunity for 

children to enhance their self esteem, build friendship 

skills, develop greater independence and give them a 

sense of their creative potential in a safe, fun and 

nurturing environment. 

DEAR PARENTS, 

The Y has over 50 years experience in the camping business. 

Your child’s safety and self-esteem is a tremendous 

responsibility and high priority in all of our programs. The 

Brandywine Y Camp Leadership Team knows how much 

impact camp can have on a child’s life and for that reason 

we take our career choice and responsibilities very seriiously. 

Our camp team works year-round to maintain the 

best camp traditions and experiences, and hire and 

train the best staff available to guide your children. Our 

goal is to create opportunities for campers to enhance 

their self esteem, build friendship skills, develop greater 

independence, tap into their creative potential and most 

of all to be silly and have fun. We are thrilled your family 

has chosen to share a part of your summer with us. We 

hope to challenge your child to try new things, enjoy new 

physical and creative activities, and create friendships 

and memories that will last a lifetime. We enjoy hearing 

from you and welcome your comments, concerns and 

suggestions. Together we can learn, share and improve 

the camp experience for all involved.

GENERAL 

INFORMATION

MEMBERSHIP 

Campers need to be members of the Y of Delaware. Full members 

receive a reduced rate. A one year program membership is available 

for $39, at the membership desk. 

Registration: Full Members, Monday, January 30 

Program Members, February 6 

HOW TO REGISTER 

•Completed enrollment/health form, registration form, & copy of 

immunization record for each camper. 

•Mail, fax or drop off at membership desk of the Brandywine Y, 

attention Gina Kapa, Camp Registrar. 

•On line registration is available at www.ymcade.org. 

•Registration is confirmed by mail when all completed forms are 

received and deposits paid in full. 

CAMP DEPOSITS 

•Full day camps, 9:00-4:00 pm; $60 deposit per session at the 

time of registration. 

•Half day camps -9:00-12:00 or 1:00-4:00 pm 

$30 deposit per session at the time of registration. 

•AM/PM care does not require deposit. 

•Deposits are non-refundable, but are transferable to another 

camp session in 2012. 

PAYMENTS 

•All balances must be paid in full 2 weeks prior to the start of each 

registered camp, including AM/PM care if necessary. Failure to pay 

balance will result in cancellation of your registration. 

•Automatic withdrawal is available from your checking, savings, or 

credit card account. Use bank draft form at back of this brochure. 

Forms are also available on-line at www.ymcade.org. 

ADDING OR CANCELLING SESSIONS 

•Use camp change form available in this brochure, on the internet 

or email request to rkapa@ymcade.org. Change forms are also 

available at the front desk of the Y. 

•A change form is necessary for each child attending. 

OPEN DOORS - FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 

The Y strives to serve everyone in our community, regardless of 

individual economic circumstances. Financial aid applications for 

Y programs and membership are available at the front desk. The 

application process is confidential and requires proof 

of financial need. A maximum of 4 weeks per camper is provided. 

Financial assistance is made possible through contributions to 

the Brandywine Y Strong Kids Campaign. 

CAMP RESPITE – MUST BE DELAWARE RESIDENT 

If you are 50 years of age or older and are raising your 

grandchildren or the children of relatives, this program provides 

the opportunity to send your children to a Y camp. Camp Respite 

is funded through local and federal organizations. Costs are 

decided individually and on a sliding fee scale. Call Gina Kapa, 

478-9622, ext. 61 for more information. 

SAFETY 

•Staff is trained in CPR, first aid, emergency procedures 

and child abuse prevention. 

•Ellis licensed lifeguards & trained swimming instructors 

are on duty during all free swims and swimming instruction. 

•Campers are pretested to identify their individual swimming 

ability and receive a bracelet identifying their level. 

•Non-swimmers unable to recover to a standing position 

are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejacket 

during free swims. 

CAMP CODE OF CONDUCT 

We require that camp staff and campers treat each other 

in accordance with the character values of caring, honesty, 

respect and responsibility. 

POSITIVE GUIDANCE 

Counselors will encourage appropriate choices and make 

every effort to redirect inappropriate behavior. Parents 

will be called to work with the counselor and camper to 

achieve a positive outcome. Campers who repeatedly 

misbehave or put themselves or other camp participants 

in harm’s way may be dismissed from the camp program. 

BUS TRANSPORTATION 

•Bus transportation is offered to campers attending any 

camps at the Hanby Outdoor Center. 

•There is no mid-day transportation for camps ending at 

12:00 noon. 

•Extended care participants using the Y site can be transported 

to (am) or from (pm) the Hanby Outdoor Center. 

•Campers remaining on the bus at the end of route will 

return: Bus 1 to Central Y; Bus 2 & 3 to camp or the Y 

and parents will be notified for pick up. 

4:00 PM PICK UP AT THE HANBY OUTDOOR CENTER 

•Campers need to be picked up promptly at 4:00 pm in 

the circle at the entrance to the Hanby Outdoor Center. 

•Please remain in your car. Staff will bring your camper 

to you. Picture ID is necessary. 


EARLY DISMISSAL/LATE ARRIVAL 

•A written note to camper's counselor is necessary with date, 

time, and who is picking up. 

•Parents or guardians are required to sign out the camper and 

may be asked to present photo ID. 

•Late arrivals must check in at camp office. 

WHAT TO WEAR 

•Sunscreen your child every morning before you leave the house. 

•Comfortable, lightweight clothing and old sneakers are best. 

•Label everything with your camper’s name. 

•Campers may wear their swim suit to camp. 

•Specialty camps may need specific supplies and/or sport 

equipment. 

SUNSCREEN 

•Please apply sun screen to your camper before they arrive to camp. 

We supply ocean potion sunscreen for our campers at our sun 

screen station. 

•Sun screen station will be a part of your campers schedule 

oAfter swim instruction in the morning 

oAfter free swim in the afternoon 

•Ocean Potion active ingredients: Homosalate 10.0%, Octisalate 

5.0%, Avobenzone 2.0%, Octocrylene 2%. 

•Campers that are sensitive to the sun should wear hats, sleeved 

shirts and a swim shirt for the pool. 

SWIMMING 

Swimming is an integral part of the camp program for both health 

and safety reasons. 

•A swim suit and towel is needed daily. All full day campers, except 

Pioneers, participate in daily swim instruction and free swim. 

•A note is necessary to excuse your camper from swimming due 

to an illness or injury. 

LOST AND FOUND 

•All lost and found items are folded and placed on shelves in the 

lost & found area. 

•Please encourage your child to check for lost items promptly. 

•Items are kept for only one week after the session ends and 

then donated to a local homeless shelter. 

PERSONAL PROPERTY 

•CD players, I-Pods, electronics, money, watches, jewelry or other 

valuable items should be left at home. We are not responsible for 

the safety of these items. 

INCLEMENT WEATHER – CAMP IS OPEN! 

•Wet weather makes it feel chilly outside even when it’s warm. 

Campers should wear pants, sweatshirt, boots, raincoat. 

•In extreme weather conditions, campers may be transported to 

a local venue by bus or Y van. 

•Campers should bring their swim suit and towel in case the 

weather clears. 

ILLNESS AND INJURY 

•Please do not send your child to camp if he/she is not feeling 

well in the morning. 

•Parents are responsible for picking up their ill child immediately. 

•Camp staff will treat minor injuries (small cuts, scrapes, bumps,etc.) 

and log the incident in the health log. 

•Parents are notified immediately for illnesses or injuries that need 

further medical attention. 

•Campers who require immediate medical attention are taken to 

AI duPont Hospital for Children. 

MEDICATION 

•Form, available at camp office, must be completed by a 

parent before medication can be administered. 

•Medications need to be brought to the camp office by 

parent/guardian in the original container. Do not send in 

with your camper. 

•Please DO NOT send more than a one week supply of 

medication at a time. 

•Parents should pick up leftover medication in a timely 

manner. Any medication left at the end of the summer 

will be discarded. 

LUNCH 

•Full day campers need a non-perishable lunch and beverage 

daily except on cookout days. The best lunch bag is a 

gallon zip lock bag with camper’s name. Lunches are refrigerated. 

•A non-perishable snack (cookies, crackers, etc) packed 

separately from their lunch is recommended for morning 

and/or afternoon snacks. 

•Water bottles labeled with your child’s name should be 

brought everyday. 

•Ice cream and drinks are sold every day at lunchtime. 

Ice cream prices range from $.50 to $1.50; drinks $1.25. 

•No lunch is required for 1/2 day camps. 

COOKOUTS 

•No lunch necessary on cookout days. 

•Explorers and Adventurers – Thursdays 

•Voyager and Pioneers – Wednesdays 

•Sports Camps at Hanby Outdoor Center - Fridays 

•Hot dogs, baked chips, and a beverage are provided. 

Y SPECIALTY CAMPS – LUNCH BOX CREW 

12:00-1:00 PM 

Provided for campers attending a morning and afternoon 

half day camp at the Y. Staff will make sure your camper gets 

to his/her afternoon camp. There is no fee for this service.

CAMP QUOOWANT 

ENTERING K - COMPLETING 9TH GRADE 

Held at the Hanby Outdoor Center, located on Chestnut Street, connecting Marsh & Darley Rds. Monday – Friday, 9:00-4:00 pm. 

Campers may arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of camp. Campers receive a free camp t-shirt the first week they attend. 

AM and PM care is also available, 7:00-9:00 am; 4:00-6:00 pm. 

EXPLORERS 7210 (GIRLS), 7211 (BOYS) 

Activities are centered around a weekly theme. Campers participate 

in a daily “POW-WOW”, to find out about the day’s activities, learn 

camp songs and be silly with the entire Explorer group. Staff 

encourage our youngest campers to meet new friends, try new 

activities, become responsible for their belongings and have fun. 

Activities include daily morning swim lessons, afternoon free swim, 

cookouts on Thursdays and a special activity is planned on Fridays. 

Campers should bring lunch, water bottle, swim suit, towel and 

sunscreen daily. 

Ages: Entering Kindergarten thru completed 1st grade 

Fees: Full Member: $212 / Program Member: $248 

Session 4 (no camp 7/4): 

Full Member: $168 / Program Member $200 

ADVENTURERS 7212 (GIRLS), 7213 (BOYS) 

Activities and POW-WOW are based around the week’s theme. 

Adventure campers will live the theme all week. Staff are full of 

camp spirit and encourage new friendships, trying new activities, 

caring and respecting others in the group and becoming more 

independent. Activities include daily morning swim lessons and an 

afternoon free swim. Field trips are scheduled every Wednesday to 

local state parks, bowling, or skating rinks. Thursday is cookout 

day and a special activity is planned every Friday. Campers should 

bring lunch, water bottle, swim suit, towel and sunscreen daily. 

Ages: Campers who have completed 2nd-3rd grade 


Session 4 (no camp 7/4) 


EXTENDED DAY- 7:00 TO 9:00 AM OR 4:00 TO 6:00 PM. 

AM and PM care is a supervised, partially structured time which 

allows children to either relax and prepare for the day or wind 

down after a long day at camp. A variety of activities will be made 

available if campers choose to participate. Snack is provided. 

Campers signed up for AM care will be taken to their appropriate 

camp. Campers signed up for PM care will return to extended care 

at the end of their camp day. On rainy days, AM and PM care will 

meet in the barn.

VOYAGERS 7214 (GIRLS), 7215 (BOYS) 

Voyager campers are given the opportunity to choose the 

activities they’d like to participate in each day. Staff encourage 

campers to work cooperatively and make good choices. We also 

encourage them to lead by example on how to be a model camper 

for our younger campers. Campers participate daily in a morning 

swim lesson and afternoon free swim. Voyagers cook out on 

Wednesdays, and take off-site trips on Thursdays. Campers 

should bring lunch, water bottle, swim suit, towel and sunscreen 

daily. 

Ages: Campers who have completed 4th-5th grade 




PIONEERS 7216 (GIRLS), 7217 (BOYS) 

Pioneer campers are challenged with interesting activities, can 

choose to assist with other camp activities or socialize and hang 

out with friends. Pioneers cookout on Wednesday and join the 

Voyager’s off-site trip on Thursday. Campers should bring lunch, 

water bottle, swim suit, towel and sun screen daily. 

Ages: Campers who have completed 6th-7th grade 




LEADERS IN TRAINING (7601) 

LITs learn skills that enable them to lead groups and then 

put their skills to use the last two weeks of the session. 

Activities include icebreakers, training, group work, special 

events, games, free time and swimming. Campers need to apply. 

Packets will be available in early February at the front desk of 

the Y. Please make sure to have your application, completed 

references and choose an interview date. Campers should bring 

lunch, sunscreen, swim suit, and towel, and most important of

CAMP KODA 

AGES: 2 - 5 YEARS OLD 

A summer camp program for preschoolers ages 2 through Kindergarten held at the Brandywine Y, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 

12 noon. Campers participate in arts and crafts, games, stories, music and fun activities that are age appropriate and centered on a 

theme. Campers participate in swimming lessons and need to bring a swim suit and towel, as indicated below. Two year old campers 

do not swim. Camp Koda is a great opportunity for your child to make new friends and try new things while having summer fun in a

Lunch Bunch.

PRESCHOOL COOKING CAMP [7364] 

Campers will learn to mix it up with basic cooking skills, healthy 

eating habits and create tasty treats. If your child is attending 

Camp Koda, they can stay for Lunch Bunch and we will take them

Campers will develop gross motor skills through movement and 

basic tumbling skills in a fun, safe environment. Campers are 

grouped according to skill level and will work through rolls, 

balancing, cartwheels, bridges, handstands and more! Camp is 

held in the gym. If your child is attending Camp Koda, they can 

stay for Lunch Bunch and we will take them to their tumbling

different physically active games encouraging the development of

NATURE NITCH CAMP [7362] 

Campers explore the wonderful world of nature through a 

variety of topics including plant life, butterflies, bats, birds 

and more. If your child is attending Camp Koda, they can 

stay for Lunch Bunch and we will take them to their Nature

DANCE CAMPS 


Each of our dance camps will have a different theme with new dances and music for campers to join us for more than one 

age appropriate camp 

TINY TOTS PRESCHOOL DANCE CAMP (7330) 

A first camp experience that will include ballet, tap and theater 

skills. Campers will help make costumes, scenery and the program 

for a special performance the last day of camp for family and 

friends. Ballet and tap shoes suggested but not required. Wear 

leotard and tights or comfortable clothing. If you have questions,

GOLF CAMP (7509) 

Campers are transported to the Eric MacCluen Golf Academy 

located at Applecross Country Club to receive instruction and 

work on the basic swing, rules and etiquette of the game. Advanced 

campers will work on different types of shots. Campers 

will play the course when available. The academy does have 

equipment for campers to use but if campers have golf equipment, 

they should bring it with them. We will keep their equipment 

at camp during the week. Campers should dress in proper 

golf attire each day (walking shorts, collared shirt or golf outfit 

for girls). Campers return to the Hanby Outdoor Center around 

200 pm and join in on camp activities. Cookout lunch on Friday.

SUPER SITTERS “PLUS” CAMP (7324) 

Prepare for those summer babysitting jobs! In addition to regular 

Super Sitter training, campers will have the opportunity of handson

special one-hour pool safety class is also included. Baby-sitter’s 

resource book, first aid manual, CPR books and certification 

included. YMCA ID card is awarded at the completion of this course

Fun and football are the focus of this non-contact form of football.

If you want to learn more about animals, come join us for a week of 

horses, birds, goats and dogs! We will learn how to care for horses

A wellness camp for teens ages 10-14 yrs old; must be 10 yrs old 

at the start of the program. Fitness staff will focus on the proper

two hours of classroom activities focusing on building self esteem 

by learning skills to help deal with emotional and social changes 

that occur during the early teen years. Campers receive a lanyard at 

the end of camp to continue their workouts independently in the

students will gain hands on experience photographing and studying 

their natural surroundings. Indoor time will be spent learning about 

natural sciences and watching nature documentaries to better 

understand the connection between art and nature. Campers need

Hands-on instruction on basic skills and fundamentals of the game

Run away to the circus at the Brandywine Y. Circus of the Kids 

returns to teach campers circus arts with a special mix of learning,

schedule. Schedule is posted Tuesday morning. Some campers may 

have to practice until 6:00 p.m. The Y will provide care for the acts

into tribes. Wednesday, they’ll follow clues to gather foods to 

prepare a dish to share with all tribes. Thursday, more challenges

A camp for boys and girls! Campers learn design and 

decorating techniques that can be helpful in real life situations 

as you measure and design in miniature. Work with fabric, paint,

Campers take trips 4 out of 5 days to ice/roller skating rinks,

alleys, baseball games and other fun places. Campers also take part 

in traditional day camp activities such as recreational swim, camp 

games, nature walks and cookout on Friday. Campers should bring 

appropriate athletic equipment depending on the trip for that day.

stars of the show performing juggling, 

bicycle acts, mini trampoline and more.

LEADERS IN TRAINING (7601) 

LITs learn skills that enable them to lead groups and put their skills 

to use the last two weeks of the session. Activities include 

icebreakers, training, group work, special events, games, free time 

and swimming. Campers need to apply. Packets will be available in 

early February at the front desk of the YMCA. Please make sure to 

have your application, completed references and choose an 

interview date. Campers should bring lunch, sunscreen, swim suit, 

towel, and most important of all a positive attitude daily. If you

Campers will learn different games of dodgeball skills . One day

such as recreational swim, camp games and nature walks. Parents 

will be notified of trip schedules before the start of camp. Campers

SUPER SITTERS “PLUS” CAMP (7324) 

Prepare for those summer babysitting jobs! In addition to regular 

Super Sitter training, campers will have hands-on child care 

experience and be trained in infant and child CPR. A special onehour 

pool safety class is also included. Baby-sitter’s resource book, 

first aid manual, CPR books and certification included. Y ID card 

is awarded at the completion of this course (you must attend all

JOURNEYS AND STRONG ENOUGH CAMP (7346) 

A wellness camp for teens ages 10-14 yrs old; must be 10 yrs old 

at the start of the program. Fitness staff will focus on the proper 

use of equipment in the Wellness Center. Campers also receive two 

hours of classroom activities focusing on building self esteem by 

learning skills to help deal with emotional and social changes that 

occur during the early teen years. Campers receive a lanyard at the 

end of camp to continue their workouts independently in the

HANBY POOL 

Every camper who attends camp at the Hanby Outdoor Center will have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing Olympic size swimming 

pool during their day at camp. Some campers take swimming lessons, while others will enjoy free swim. Every child will have the opportunity 

to swim in the afternoon and cool off from a fun day at camp 

At the Brandywine Y, we take the safety of our 

aquatic facility very seriously. Swimming lessons are taught 

by licensed guards. The pool is guarded by lifeguards who attend 

weekly in-service training to maintain their skills in the event of 

an emergency. During free swims, we have lifeguards 

managing the pool in addition to support from camp counselors 

and supervisors. Each camper has their skills assessed on the 

first day of each session to determine their swimming level 

and are assigned a bracelet based on his/her skills. 

Once everyone knows the rules of the pool and we have assessed 

everyone’s skills, the FUN BEGINS and does not end until the end 

of the camp season in August. 

THE OUTDOOR POOL IS OPEN TO MEMBERS 

Monday through Friday 1:15 – 8:00 pm 

Saturday and Sunday 10:00 am – 8:00 pm 

Please be aware that Monday-Friday there will be times you will be sharing the pool with the campers. 

THE SLIDE IS A HIGHLIGHT 

OF OUR OUTDOOR POOL. 

In order to go down the slide during the camp 

day, campers will be asked to take a test. While this can be 

a little scary for some but it is necessary to ensure the safety 

of anyone going down the slide. The slide does have a current, 

and we need to make sure that every person using the slide 

is a strong swimmer. 

Before using the slide, each camper will be asked to 

• jump into 5 feet of water 

• swim the length of the pool 

• tread or float for 30 seconds 

After successful completion of the swim test, the camper 

receives a green band and can use the slide!

Camp 

Bus transportation is provided ONLY to the HANBY OUTDOOR CENTER. Campers using AM/PM CARE at the Brandywine Y will be 

transported to or from the Hanby Outdoor Center for their camp day. THERE IS NO MID-DAY TRANSPORTATION. 

PREVIOUS TO BOARDING 

Campers should arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the stop time listed and conduct themselves in a safe manner while waiting. 

Please respect the property rights of people residing near the bus stop. 

Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before entering the bus. 

The bus counselor will check-in all campers on the bus. 

PARENTS 

Campers who are not registered will not be permitted on the bus. Please wait at the bus stop with your camper until the bus arrives. 

Campers 7 yrs old and under must have an adult/parent meet them at the stop. If your child does not get off the bus, please call the camp 

office, 475-0700 and we will make arrangements for pickup. The Y cannot be responsible for campers before the bus picks them up or 

after they are dropped off. If there is any question about how your camper is to go home, he/she will remain at the Hanby Outdoor Center 

and you will be notified to pick him/her up there. 

WHILE ON THE BUS 

The driver of the bus has complete authority while transporting campers. If behavior problems repeatedly occur or become severe, the 

bus driver will confer with the camp director in the event that behavior warrants suspension or revocation of riding privileges. 

• Campers must obey the driver and bus counselor promptly. 

• Loud laughter, talking and confusion divert the driver’s attention and may result in a serious accident. 

• Remain in your seat while the bus is in motion. Keep hands, head and arms inside the bus at all times. 

• Keep the aisle clear. 

• Food and beverages are not permitted. 

• Do not throw anything in, out or around the bus. 

• Scuffling, fighting, touching others and profane or indecent language is strictly forbidden. 

• Campers shall not leave the bus without the consent of the bus counselor or driver. 

• No animals or dangerous instruments are permitted on the bus. 

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE REGULATIONS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF BUS PRIVILEGES.
