• Have a poor grasp of graphemephoneme
relationships
• Read at a laboriously slow rate
• Are unable to comprehend because
of inaccurate reading
When You Need
Comprehension
Students who need Comprehension
intervention do not write well, do not
think or speak with clarity, and are not
highly motivated.
Students with Comprehension
problems:
• Cannot follow multi-step directions
Exhibit poor auditory memory and
•
statement repetition skills
• Lack the analytical skills required to
process arguments
• Have a de cient vocabulary
Decoding A: Word Attack Basics addresses non-readers by
teaching sound-spelling relationships. Students quickly
develop reading strategies for sounding out words and
applying those strategies in context.
Decoding B1 and B2: Decoding Strategies re ne word-attack
skills by introducing new words and promoting word
discrimination. Students build uency and comprehension
by reading stories of increasing length and di culty.
SRA Reading Success
Grades 3–12
Levels A–C
Help your students gain and master essential
comprehension skills and strategies with SRA Reading
Success. This supplemental reading program requires
Preview At the Fair. Gradually release support to bring students to
independence by first echo reading, then having students partner read,
and finally having students read independently.
For help with specific scaffolding issues, see p. x Coaching
Language Bank.
If students are able to take over right away, change books.
Preview Talk about the title of the book: At the Fair. Make
predictions about the story. As we are previewing the story, try
to predict what will happen. Use the illustrations to help you.
Preview At the Fair, asking students what is happening on each
page and to predict what will happen. Use concept vocabulary
from the story (fair, up, down) during the preview. On pages 2-3,
I see two animals at a place with rides. This place is called a fair. A fair
is like a carnival. Have you ever been to a fair? What can you find at
a fair?
Echo Read Read the title At the Fair. while finger pointing.
Have students do the same. Then read the first page while finger pointing
and have students do the same. Continue echo-reading to the end of
the book. I see from our reading that some of our predictions were
confirmed but some had to be readjusted.
Partner Read Pair students to alternate reading. One student in
a pair reads the title while finger pointing. Then the partner does the
same with the next page. Have students read until they reach the end
of the book.
Independent Read Students read independently. Remind them
to finger point as they read the entire book, beginning with the title.
3 Apply Phonics and Word Study Skills
Monitor Understanding
Work in partners to sort –ack and –ap word families. If a student already
knows both –ack and –ap word families, select a less familiar word family
to sort. Use the assessment data to select this word family.
Keep a record of unknown words. For help with specific scaffolding issues,
see p. x Coaching Language Bank.
Word Sort — Day 2 of –ack, –ap Use Word Cards: –ack and –ap
(1-12). Show each card to the group to identify and put unknown words
to the side. Work in partners to sort –ack and –ap word families. Choose
one student to be your partner.
Select an exemplar for each word family. Draw the first known
word, compare it to the exemplar, and place it in the proper
column. Read the column of words while touching each word.
Alternate, having the student repeat the procedure with the next
word until 4-5 cards are in each column. Come back as a group
and ask: How are the words alike? [All the words in the –ack word
family have the same ending sounds. (back, lack, pack, quack,
sack, tack)]
Select 1-2 unknown words for students to sort and read.
Word Bank Flash the Word Bank Cards down, they, up,
we, went (1-5) for students to identify.
Connect to Spelling
Dictate a sentence that contains words in the –ack and –ap word families.
Have students write the sentence.
Interactive Writing Dictate the following sentence: Get the map
from the sack. Say the sentence and repeat it. Have students repeat it with
you. Then repeat the sentence and count the number of words (6). Repeat
the sentence as students are writing it. Write the sentence on a sentence
strip with student’s help. Have students self-correct their sentences.
Integrate Skills and Strategies
Have students practice reading At the Fair independently.
Give students the Phonics Practice Book Max is Sick for
Jamestown Reading Navigator is an
program built upon the latest research
in adolescent literacy and aligned with
the Reading Next report. The online
component of Jamestown Reading
Navigator improves students’
comprehension by utilizing direct,
explicit instruction and modeling
of good reading practices. Students
practice and apply these reading
strategies and skills by reading highly
engaging content, viewing interactive
multimedia, and writing in response
to reading. The print-based readings
from the inTIME magazines and
the inClass Reader anthologies give
students an opportunity to extend
their learning beyond the computer
and encourage collaborative or
independent learning. Teachers can
monitor student progress utilizing the
online Learner Management System
where scores from formative and
summative assessments are recorded.
