Preview Talk about the title of the book: At the Fair. Make 

predictions about the story. As we are previewing the story, try 

to predict what will happen. Use the illustrations to help you. 

Preview At the Fair, asking students what is happening on each 

page and to predict what will happen. Use concept vocabulary 

from the story (fair, up, down) during the preview. On pages 2-3, 

I see two animals at a place with rides. This place is called a fair. A fair 

is like a carnival. Have you ever been to a fair? What can you find at 

a fair? 

Echo Read Read the title At the Fair. while finger pointing. 

Have students do the same. Then read the first page while finger pointing 

and have students do the same. Continue echo-reading to the end of 

the book. I see from our reading that some of our predictions were 

confirmed but some had to be readjusted. 

Partner Read Pair students to alternate reading. One student in 

a pair reads the title while finger pointing. Then the partner does the 

same with the next page. Have students read until they reach the end 

of the book. 

Independent Read Students read independently. Remind them 

to finger point as they read the entire book, beginning with the title.

Word Sort — Day 2 of –ack, –ap Use Word Cards: –ack and –ap 

(1-12). Show each card to the group to identify and put unknown words 

to the side. Work in partners to sort –ack and –ap word families. Choose 

one student to be your partner. 

Select an exemplar for each word family. Draw the first known 

word, compare it to the exemplar, and place it in the proper 

column. Read the column of words while touching each word. 

Alternate, having the student repeat the procedure with the next 

word until 4-5 cards are in each column. Come back as a group 

and ask: How are the words alike? [All the words in the –ack word 

family have the same ending sounds. (back, lack, pack, quack, 

sack, tack)] 

Select 1-2 unknown words for students to sort and read.
