serena schourup carlsen ’78 writes, “I am working as a
partner at Stoel rives in Seattle continuing my now 25-year
law practice in commercial real estate. I have two boys, 8
and 9 years old. I reconnected with Patricia Skinner ’78,
who is living in Virginia and spending time out here
periodically with her father. Patti’s husband, Brad Stevens,
is a professional portrait artist, and they were up in the
San juan Islands with us while Brad painted the boys’
portrait on the beach. life is busy and very full.”
1980s
n. Jan chalupny ’80 learned this spring that she was selected
to receive a Science Education Advocate Award, given by
the Washington State lASEr (leadership and Assistance
for Science Education reform) organization with support
from The Boeing Company. Each year this award is given to
as many as five individuals, organizations and project teams
who have demonstrated outstanding advocacy for science
education in the State of Washington and have promoted the
importance of science education among the general public
and the education system. jan works as a research scientist at
Amgen but also spends time pursuing her passion for science
education–including some teaching at Forest ridge with mr.
john Fenoli. “I am very proud and excited to be considered
worthy of this award,” jan says.
Arden clise ’80 reports, “As president of Clise Etiquette,
I write a regular business etiquette column with the Puget
Sound Business journal. my articles come out every couple
of months. links to all of my articles can be found on my

a weekly etiquette radio show with 90.7 KSEr. my shows air
every monday morning at 6:42 and 8:42 a.m. you can stream

and individuals and cover everything from making a good
first and lasting impression, networking with ease and

shannon Underwood ’81 and her husband, David Gartland,
and children Kylie, Sean and Kevin, report that they are
living in Florence for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Shannon and David are studying art history and Italian,
writing, traveling and riding their bikes. The kids are in school
at the International School of Florence, where they are making
great progress in their language study. Kylie is particularly
looking forward to returning to Forest ridge as a junior and
starting the IB curriculum this fall.
laurie r. Boyle ’82 and Douglas Castro, her husband of
five years, have just purchased a home on the island of Hawaii
and plan to move there within the next year. laurie has been
practicing massage therapy and energy healing for 15 years
and has recently become certified as a yoga therapist and
Pilates instructor. She is looking forward to moving her
practice to paradise and spending more quality time with her
husband there.
hilary lampard ’82, Kristen easter ’82 and Kathy Marchioro
Johnston ’82 took in a mariners’ game together in August
2010. “We make it a point every summer to go to an m’s game
together. In 2009 Julie o’neil also joined us as we sweltered in
the heat on the hottest day ever in Seattle. We have tried to
remember the details of how long we have done this and who
the visiting team was each time, but apparently we use our
brain capacity for other important activities,” Hilary writes.
