President’s Message
Dear Fellow Members,
The Festive Period has come and gone. We can
now move on to giving all our attention to the
upcoming Showing Season.
By now you will know that it was all but impossible
to continue staging our National Show at
Bloemfontein. Our Society has held these
Nationals on an annual basis for a good number
of years. In order to ensure this continuity is
main tained, the Regional Committee of the
Eastern Cape offered the Agricultural Show -
grounds at Cradock as an alternative venue. This
has placed an enormous workload on the limited
workforce of our smallest active region.
Obviously only the maximum support of our
members can determine how well rewarded their
efforts will be.
At virtually every AGM, some member will refer
to the camaraderie at Nationals which appears to
have been lost over the years. The Eastern Cape
Committee will make every effort to see that each
day’s showing ends early enough so that all our
exhibitors can enjoy the entertainment planned for
the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday.
In the past the AGM has been held on the
evening before showing actually begins. Those
who exhibit will know how critical this time is
PRELIMINARY NOTICE
General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting of the Welsh
the Cradock Showgrounds.
Items vir die Agenda en Nominasies vir die
Raad moet die Sekretaresse, Posbus 1029,
Halfway House, 1685 nie later as 25 Februarie
2012 bereik nie
for the myriad of little things which can only be
done at the last minute. In consequence, the
AGM has been moved to the Thursday evening.
Please attend. There are a number of important
decisions to be taken, including the future of
Nationals. It is one of life’s great paradoxes that
those members who ignore communication from
Council, seem to have the most to say later, most
of it negative.
Despite the misgivings of one or two prophets of
doom, our Society is in fine shape considering
these troubled times.
We are looking forward to seeing as many of you
as possible at Nationals and hope you enjoy your
show successes and the new spirit which
pervades the Welsh Pony and Cob fraternity.
Best wishes for 2012 - Derek.

Height certificates
welsh ponies of Cob type are entered in the
correct section of the Studbook, they are
required to have an official height certificate at
possible after the animal has reached this age.
No entries will be accepted for Section C & D
animals of 5yrs and older at Regional or
OBITUARY
Trudie Gilfillan
It is with great sadness that we report the
death of Trudie Gulfillan at the end of
October 2011. Trudie was an Honorary Life
member who had served on Council on many
occasions. She was a founder partner, with
Jack, of the well-known Haelline Stud and
will be remembered in competition for her
skilled driving in the Ladies Fine Harness
class among others. For many of us she was
an integral part of our National
Championships and it is hard to imagine the
collecting ring without Trudie in control.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to Jack,
Spookie, Michael, Elizabeth, all the grandchildren
and her many friends.
STUD NEWS
Paddock Hill - three years of showing!
Although we did not enter Nationals in 2011 because of the country-wide
African Horse Sickness threat, our Stud nevertheless did very well on the
Regional front in the Western and Eastern Cape. Thus at the 2011 WC
Regional Championship, we took the Junior Championship and Reserve,
the Senior Mare Championship and Reserve, the Senior Stallion
Championship and the Supreme Championship - a "full-house" for us so
to speak. At the 2011 EC Regional Championship, we again won the
Junior Championship, the Senior Mare Championnship and Reserve. We
were placed Reserve Supreme, our mare standing down to a very flashy red-roan stallion.
The end of 2011 marks three successive years of showing for us. During this relatively short period
we won the SA Junior championship on the two occasions we entered Nationals. At Regional
level, in the WC (Robertson) and EC (Cradock) and in Heidelburg, we have captured the Junior
Championship consecutively at each show over the three years of our showing. Our eldest mare
has taken the Senior Mare championship on each of the 4 occasions in which she has competed in
this category. Between them our ponies have won 4 Supreme Championships and three Reserve
Supreme Championships. In the three years they have taken 2 Purebred Supreme Championships.
Our senior mare qualified for
the Legion of Merit in 2010
and in 2011.
Our show team consisted of :
Paddock Hill Sun Coquet (pictured
top and bottom right),
Paddock Hill Sun Frolic,
STUD NEWS
Dimmock Dragonfly
The arrivals of Dragonfly’s “Christmas Crop”
this year made for a very exciting time indeed.
Proud owners are Ken and Lynn Twort, the
Bechards, and the Cocksedge family and three
for Lynn and Claire Owen of Silkwoods Stud
in Hilton.
Dams are two TBs, two Partbred Welsh show
ponies by Bumble Bee (Waterside Sunrise out
of Lady Art, Twicker’s dam, and Jebel Miss
Dior), a charming coloured cob called Jigsaw
and a Boerperd/Arab ex eventing pony.
The foals are beautiful, have exceeded all
expectations, are show quality and very
friendly. They are all in Hilton or Nottingham
Road/Rosetta where I go to visit Dragonfly
almost every week. They are glorious colours,
cream, coloured, grey, bay (all fillies) and two
chestnut colts. Now we are waiting for Grant
and Carla Langley's mare Foresyte Forest Fire
and the last foal this year will be down in the
Cape.from Catherine Anderson’s a TB mare.
S A SPRING SHOW 2011
Judges Report
I would like to thanks Sue and all her hard working committee
for inviting me to judge the Welsh classes at the Spring Show
2011.
Early on Saturday morning I was collected by Mike Bernstein
and driven to the show ground at Pretoria. On arrival I was
introduced to Terence Jägers a probation judge for the Welsh
classes.
The Part Bred classes were first in the ring; although the classes
were small in numbers due to the other shows in the area some
very nice ponies came forward for their respective classes.
A very nice Welsh type chestnut filly, Dibynn Chit Chat, owned
by Dibynn Stud and shown by Di Nicholson stood out and took
the Championship from the Stallion, Bronwydd Bannut
Laburnum, who unfortunately did not show himself off to his full
potential. Laburnum is owned by Sue Dittmann and shown by
Muiren Kok,
Section A classes followed on with a good moving chestnut colt
Tipuana Flamboyant, owned by Tipuana Stud and shown by
Digby Donaldson taking the Junior Championship. The senior
classes concluded with the stallions, Gwyddls Dante and
Caernafon Tabutanna Dunkid, both owned by Wehlia De Villiers
and shown by Johannes Mbewe and Jeremiah Klaas, standing
champion and reserve from the juniors.
Section B had very little support with the mare Meifod Highland
Fling being champion and the stallion Meifod Bellissimo reserve.
Both ponies are owned by Sharon Ralston and were shown by
Kiven.
In the Section C classes a free moving stallion Freyja Taliesin,
owned by Rene Le Roux and shown by Wilton Nkomo stood
champion with the mare Cavallito Hawaiin Sunset, owned by
Claudette Vianello reserve.
In the Section D classes some nice junior cobs came forward with
the 3 year old filly Llandilo Princess Royal, owned by Tipuana
Stud and shown by Digby Donaldson taking the junior championship
and the yearling Cavallito Allanay , owned by Rene Le
Roux and shown by James, reserve. The two senior mares
Bukkenburg Gwenllan, owned by Rene Le Roux and shown by
Wilton Nkomo, and Bukkenburg Gwendline, owned by Siobahn
Ralston, took the championship and reserve respectively.
The gelding class a good type of cob stood out: Freyja Victor
Bach, owned by Rene Le Roux and shown by Wilton Nkomo
10
headed the class to take the Championship with a Section A,
Meifod Maistro, owned by Sharon Ralston and shown by Kiven,
reserve.
Sunday, Performance Day, commenced with the First Ridden a
very well ridden pony Tipuana Eros, owned by Roly Stud and
shown by Trentin Varrall took the first place. The leading rein
was a lovely little pony, Dunkid St Peter that went well for the
small rider, Daniella Strauss. Some well schooled Partbred
ponies came forward giving a smooth ride to their riders.
The Championships were co judged with a very nice lady, Shirley
Sadleir; both Shirley and I agreed on the Champions and
Reserves. Champion Purebred Young Child’s Pony was Tipuana
Eros ridden by Trentin Varrall and Reserve was Hydown Olympic
Sportsman ridden by Tyrique Varrall. Champion Partbred Young
Child’s Pony was Foresyte Michaelangelo, owned by Ainsley
Bailey and ridden by Elena De Abreu and Reserve was Golden
Nugget owned and shown by Hannah Boulle.
The Pure Breed Ridden classes followed on with a Section A Blom
Stardust owned by Kaylin Jacobs and ridden by Imke Schamrel
Champion and the Section D Freyja Victor Bach, owned and ridden
by Rene Le Roux Reserve Champion; both the pony and the
cob performed very well in their classes.
To conclude the ridden section the large Part Bred Show Riding
class was won by a very nice type of horse, Foresyte
Michaelangelo, owned and shown by Ainsley Bailey, well produced
and ridden with the second in the class, Drummore
Picadilly, owned and shown by Kiara Joelson, going on to stand
Champion and Reserve respectively.
The Child and Junior handler classes were closely contested with
Tayla Shipper winning the child handler and Kiara Joelson the
junior handler.
I would like to thank Sue, Mike, Lyn and Roger of the Roly Stud
for their kindness, hospitality, looking after me so well and
showing me some of the lovely country side and studs in the
area.
I hope your Welsh Ponies and Cobs go from strength to strength
in South Africa and once again many thanks to you all.
