F or LOCAL HISTORY Panacea Museum opens its doors years many people within Bedford have wondered about ‘the Panacea Society’, a unique religious community that once lived and worshipped within the centre of Bedford. They no longer exist but the museum within the society’s grounds between Newnham Road and Albany Road will now showcase their history and beliefs. This unusual religious community held deeply Christian views and were committed to local and national causes. The museum consists of buildings and gardens that tell their history and one of the buildings on the complex is the Edwardian ‘Founders House’, where the community’s leader ’Mabel Barltrop’ lived. Mabel and her followers believed that she was both a prophet and the daughter of god and the house contains many of her original writings and possessions.
