WELLBEING
Osteopathy & Pregnancy ...
Pregnancy involves huge
postural change over a
short period of time. The
body has to adapt to a
different centre of gravity
and carry extra weight.
The hormone relaxin is produced
in large quantities, especially later
in pregnancy. It prepares the
pelvis for childbirth by making it
more flexible but it also makes
all the other joints of the body
looser as well, leading to strain.
Osteopathic treatment will
help the body to adapt to these
rapid changes, taking the strain
off problem areas. Structural
problems that existed before
pregnancy can also lead to
additional pain or discomfort so
pregnancy is a good time to sort
these problems out.
Ideally, come for treatment
before your bump gets too big.
This will give us time to resolve
any problems before the growing
weight of your baby puts too much
pressure on your spine. Common
ailments in pregnancy, such as
pelvic pain (including symphysis
pubis dysfunction or “SPD”) and
heartburn, are considered normal
and to be expected. With regular
osteopathic care this need not be
the case. We can often help avoid
or relieve these uncomfortable
conditions so you can enjoy your
pregnancy.
Osteopathy can relieve strains
after childbirth and help your
posture return to normal. Your
ligaments will still be lax, making
your joints prone to injury.
Activities like carrying your baby,
lifting car seats or prams, sitting to
feed and odd sleeping positions,
can all take their toll. You may
benefit from some osteopathic
treatment at this wonderful but
strenuous time.
North Beds Osteopaths are based
in Bromham and Sharnbrook.
