Historical summary:
The yellow-breasted capuchin monkey breeding programme is a part of a global conservation programme that has been designed in 1992 by IBAMA,
the Brazilian governmental agency for environment and renewable resources, and is managed by an international committee, now called
“International Committee for the Conservation of the Primates of Northern Atlantic Forest and Caatinga”.
The captive breeding programme was an initiative, in 1980, of Pr. A. Coimbra Fliho, founder and director of the Rio de Janeiro Primate Center
(CPRJ). The breeding programme started in Europe in Mulhouse Zoo in 1990 following an agreement of collaboration between director Dr.
Jean-Marc Lernould and Pr. Coimbra Filho, with the support of the IUCN SSP Primate Specialist Group.
The EEP was established in 2000 with Jean-Marc Lernould as coordinator.
European zoos willing to participate in the breeding programme have to be approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment through the Instituto
Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade-ICMBio, http://www.icmbio.gov.br, (until 2007 it was through IBAMA), and are strongly encouraged
to support in situ conservation. They have to accept the rules established by the international committee that have precedence on those of EEPs and
are more constraining. Jean-Marc Lernould, member of the International Committee, is the link between ICMBio and the EEP.
The studbook (Brazilian & European regional) was last published in 2008, including Brazilian institutions, by EEP coordinator Jean-Marc Lernould
