Achievements
We were the first major retailer to
carbon label 100 own-brand products
in Ireland and the UK including orange juice,
detergent and potatoes. We will introduce
them in South Korea this year. See page 11.
We opened our first new format
environmental store in Cheetham Hill,
Manchester, which has a 70% smaller
carbon footprint than an equivalent
store built in 2006. Planning permitting,
this will be a model for building stores
from now on. See page 9.
We halved our energy use per square foot
in our UK stores (against a baseline of 2000).
See page 7.
Achievements
We signed up 726 skilled and vetted
auditors from 11 audit bodies around
the world to carry out independent audits
of our supply chain. See page 29.
Over 90% of suppliers around the world
say we treat them with respect. See page 25.
Challenges
Since we introduced biofuel into our
petrol filling stations there has been
debate about its longer-term impacts.
We have asked the Sustainable
Consumption Institute (SCI) at
Manchester University to look at this
issue in more detail. See page 16.
We are not yet able to report Group
water use in 2008. This is disappointing.
We have asked the SCI to help us
establish a meaningful approach.
See page 11.
We have been working hard to achieve
very stretching packaging reduction
targets based on weight. We now think
weight reduction may not be the best
measure of environmental benefit.
We are working with suppliers to achieve
a consensus on a better approach.
See page 14.
Challenges
We risk assessed 100% of supplier sites
and increased the number of high-risk sites
audited to 87% (up from 73% last year) but
there is still work to do to meet our target of
auditing 100% of high-risk sites. See page 29.
We are engaged in an active dialogue with
animal welfare organisations to continue
to improve industry welfare standards.
See page 27.
