Building capacity
We develop the skills and capabilities of
our buyers, technical teams and suppliers
so they have the know-how to improve
labour standards in our supply chain.
We revised our core training programmes
for buyers and for technical managers in
2008. These courses are mandatory for
all new starters. Tesco employees received
more than 2,400 hours of training on
ethical trading during the year.
We tailored our core supplier training
in 2008 following feedback that our
workshops could be more specific to
local conditions, enabling greater sharing
of experience and best practice. We ran
16 one-day workshops in Bangladesh,
China, Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Israel,
Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Turkey
and the UK. These were facilitated in
local languages by expert trainers and
sought to deepen understanding of labour
standards and the business benefits
of improving them, as well as providing
practical guidance.
We also introduced a confidential,
independently facilitated feedback
session at the end of each workshop.
In these, suppliers asked for clearer
guidance and communication on
our processes and spoke frankly about
our purchasing practices. Consolidated
feedback was given to commercial
directors and will inform our work
on purchasing practices in 2009.
Other activity in 2008 included co-hosting
– with the NGO Banana Link – roundtable
discussions between unions and banana
producers in Costa Rica. We also held
a productive five-day conference in
Cape Town where we worked with supply
chain representatives, auditors, trade
associations and non-governmental
organisations to revise our South African
ethical trading programme.
Working with others
We recognise that some countries we
source from face complex and systemic
problems. To tackle these we need
to work in partnership with others.
For example, we took part in the ETI
Supervisor Training project, which
culminated in a successful pilot to tackle
sexual harassment on farms in Kenya.
ETI peers elected Tesco representatives
to chair two specialist groups for 2008.
We were involved in other ETI working
groups on China, homeworkers,
wages and purchasing practices. Tesco
representatives led a working group
at the ETI Conference in October, and
appeared in awareness-raising DVDs.
We continue to sit on the board of SEDEX
and contributed to its working groups
on audit methodology, risk assessment
and system development. We chair the
Global Social Compliance Programme,
an important initiative to drive global
best practice.
We also chair the MFA Forum Bangladesh
Working Group. This has sought to
ensure that Bangladeshi labour rights
activists are treated fairly and pressed
their Government to reconvene the
national wages board that secured a
major minimum wage increase in 2006.
We were the world’s first major retailer
to ban Uzbek cotton in our clothing
and home textiles. This was a last
resort, following years of research
into poor environmental practices
and the continued use of governmentorganised
forced child labour in
the industry.
We want to be certain where our
cotton comes from and that our
suppliers uphold the ban on Uzbek
cotton, and have adopted tracking
systems to ensure this. We have
proved, for the first time ever, that it is
possible to trace the country of origin
of conventional as well as Fairtrade
cotton. We plan to roll out the tracking
system to our entire UK cotton supply
chain during 2009, so we can trace the
country of origin of all cotton in our
clothing and home products.
In 2008, we were recognised for
our industry-leading efforts in
cotton sourcing at the ethical fashion
event, Re:Fashion. We were highly
commended under the Re:Cotton
Award and were the only major retailer
to be nominated in any category.
Director of the Environmental Justice
Foundation, Steve Trent, commented,
“Although it has taken time to
implement a credible ‘track and trace’
mechanism within Tesco’s cotton
supply chain, the detailed approach
they have taken to doing this presents
a benchmark which other retailers
need to live up to”.
