Dr J R Stockton. Actually, February, the most misspelled of all the months, can be a rather
depressing month, however, it’s up to us to make the most of it and find things to do,
especially as half term is looming and the little ones need to be entertained! Hopefully, there
might be something in this month’s issue that will take your fancy. Today saw the first snow
flakes of the year in our area, but hey presto, it has already disappeared and yes it’s now
raining! Ah well...

Do you fancy a spring weekend on the edge of the
Black Forest with door-to-door travel arranged? Well,
Haslemere & District Twinning Association is planning a
visit to their German Twin Town of Horb-am-Neckar
from 31st May to 3rd June. Travel arrangements are yet
to be finalised but the total travel cost from Haslemere
is not expected to exceed £240 including membership
of the Association. Visitors on these trips are always
made extremely welcome and the Haslemere guests
stay in homes of local people. Meals and activities are
laid on by the hosts and guests usually enjoy their stay
so much they are eager to receive their hosts in return
the following year. If you are interested in taking part in
this visit, telephone Ann Fitchett on 01428 653487. She
will then keep you informed about the final travel plans
and cost. Leave your name and phone number if she is
not at home. Twinning visits are suited both to those
travelling on their own or as a couple or family and
indeed have proved a good way to make new friends
with other people from Haslemere. English is widely
spoken in Horb and the organisers there take language
knowledge into account, so there is no need to feel that
speaking little or no German is a barrier. The hosts are
all volunteers who actively want to receive a guest or
guests from Haslemere.
The second part of HHH Concerts’ season opens at St
Christopher’s Church on Saturday 9th February at
7.30pm with a piano recital by the highly acclaimed
Welsh pianist Llŷr Williams. He has performed with
orchestras around the world including the BBC
Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, I Pomeriggi
Musicali and the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg. He
appears regularly at the BBC Proms and has given many
remarkable performances at the Edinburgh Festival,
including an astonishing account of Charles Ives’
Concord Sonata in 2010. The programme will include:
Beethoven - Sonata No 14 Moonlight, Skryabin - Sonata
No 2 in G sharp minor, Bartók - Piano Sonata, Bridge -
Piano Sonata, Skryabin - Sonata No 4 in F sharp major
On Saturday 16th March the Danish String Quartet are
making a welcome return to HHH. Since playing in
Haslemere in 2011, the Quartet has been going from
strength to strength and has just been awarded a
three-year residency by the Chamber Music Society of
Lincoln Center New York. The joy of their playing and
the powerful impact the quartet makes on stage have
led to many successes including the 2010 Nordmetall-
Ensemble Prize and 2011 Carl Nielsen Prize. The Danish
Quartet will play: Wolf - Italian Serenade, Bartók -
Quartet No 1, Beethoven - Quartet in A minor Op.132.

If you have ever wanted to try scuba diving or have
dived before and want to start again, now’s your
chance! Haslemere Sub Aqua Club (HSAC) is giving you
the opportunity to book a free try-dive with one of their
qualified instructors on Thursday 28th February at 8pm
at the Herons Leisure Centre, Kings Road, Haslemere,
Surrey, GU27 2QT. HSAC (affiliated with the national Sub
Aqua Association) meets each Thursday at the Herons
Leisure Centre with theory sessions at 7.45pm followed
by pool training at 8.45pm and a social drink afterwards
at the Mill Tavern. New faces are always welcome so
come along and introduce yourself any
