November 23, 1943<br />

CHINA: Thirteen 11th Medium Bombardment Squadron B-25s escorted<br />

by 24 Fourteenth Air Force P-40s and seven A-36s, attack rail yards and<br />

warehouses and Yoyang; and eight P-40s attack IJA cavalry and river<br />

traffic near Hanshow.<br />

EAST INDIES: V Bomber Command B-24s attack a convoy near<br />

Halmahera Island.<br />

GILBERT ISLANDS: VF-16 F6F pilots down 17 A6Ms near Makin<br />

Atoll at appromimately 1005 hours.<br />

Lt(jg) Eugene R. Hanks, a VF-16 F6F pilot, becomes the first<br />

F6F ace in a day when he downs five A6Ms (and probably downs a<br />

sixth) near Tarawa Atoll at 1006 hours.<br />

U.S. Army troops overcome resistance on Butaritari Island in<br />

Makin Atoll, and U.S. Marines secure Betio Island in Tarawa Atoll after<br />

a particularly bloody fight that points up the low state-of-the-art<br />

effectiveness of air and naval bombardment. Moves are made to<br />

completely secure both atolls and some outlying island groups still<br />

occupied by Japanese forces.<br />

MARSHALL ISLANDS: Six VII Bomber Command B-24s based at<br />

Nukufetau Airdrome attack Jaluit Atoll; and Task Group 50.1 carrier<br />

aircraft attack Mille Atoll.<br />

NEW GUINEA: V Bomber Command B-25s and A-20s attack occupied<br />

villages around Finschhafen.<br />

P-40 pilots with the 35th Fighter Group’s 40th Fighter Squadron<br />

down an A6M and a Ki-43 near Saidor at 0955 hours.
