SUSTAINABLE
MASTERPLANNING SOLUTIONS
FOR TODAY'S BUILT ENVIRONMENT
Buro Happold is leading the way in designing masterplans that are more
environmentally responsible - sustainability is considered part of our everyday
approach to engineering the built environment. Growing concern surrounding
issues such as global warming and climate change means that the role of the
engineer has never been so critical in the delivery of masterplans that are both
functional and sustainable. We strive to create places that ‘touch the earth
lightly’ and welcome the challenges this presents.
Our engineers work with architects,
planners and clients to develop efficient,
effective and environmentally responsible
solutions, allowing us to identify designs
that maximise opportunities for achieving
sustainable outcomes and minimising
impacts. We consider the potential
environmental impact of new buildings and
infrastructure, as well as other key factors
such as ground remediation, flood risk,
transport noise, air and water quality, waste
management and habitat creation. We also
continue to examine and identify new and
more responsible ways to:
• Limit our use of natural resources by
adopting more responsible approaches
• Seek more efficient methods to move
people, products and waste
• Encourage new and alternative
technologies to meet existing needs
In this arena the use of on-site or
decentralised infrastructure through new
and innovative approaches that we are
researching will have a role to play and
will help us to safeguard the longevity of
our planet, and improve the quality of the
places that we create.
Our masterplanning solutions aim to:
• Follow the principles of environmental
best practice
• Combine commercial realism with
community needs
• Reduce the environmental impact of
development
• Enhance the quality and safety of the
built environment
• Engage the ongoing participation of
local people
• Encourage the sustainable use of energy
and resources
• Enable building projects to achieve
their full potential
