CHAPTER FIVE<br />
Weybridge was a busy place during the war years, Vickers<br />
Armstrong's Aircraft Company being in the vicinity, and pro-<br />
viding employment for thousands of people. Each morning,<br />
around breakfast time, the avenue beneath our window was<br />
buzzing with motor cars, trucks and bicycles—all on their<br />
way to Vickers; but after an hour or so, the road was almost<br />
deserted again. Yes, we were continually reminded of the war.<br />
Of course Brooklands' race track, also in the Weybridge<br />
district, was known all over the world.<br />
For us it was a fairly quiet period in our lives for we did not<br />
lead much of a social life, having very few visitors. Carl was<br />
not fond of mixing with people, so his employer held this<br />
against him. If you want to succeed in business life, it seems<br />
you must smoke, drink and BE SOCIAL, whatever that means!<br />
A few of my acquaintances came to visit us ‘out in the<br />
sticks’ and I remember one in particular, a nurse who had but<br />
recently been married. She had flouted hospital regulations<br />
and married one of her patients in the hospital. Although her<br />
name escapes my memory, I have several reasons for remem-<br />
bering this young lady—not the least being that she was an<br />
excellent nurse, admired by staff and management alike. Her<br />
husband, prior to the marriage, had suffered a motor-cycle<br />
accident; thus he became a patient, having one leg amputated.<br />
During his illness and convalescence, no doubt partly due to<br />
the extreme care he enjoyed at her hands, he fell in love with<br />
his nurse. After his discharge from hospital, there were many<br />
escapades, after hours, and it was not long before wedding<br />
bells were ringing for nurse and patient. Around that particu-<br />
