The new year at Zurich Airport has begun in fantastic fashion in the
truest sense of the word. On 20th January the world’s largest commercial
aircraft, the Airbus A380, landed at Zurich Airport for the
very first time – an event celebrated by over 20 000 aviation
enthusiasts. The luxury aircraft, which seats 471 passengers,
will fly from Zurich to Singapore for Singapore Airlines from 28 th
March. And perhaps you’ll soon be on board an A380 heading for
Singapore with a little luck in our competition. Yet the airport has

perfectly timed for the start of spring: Grieder’s newly refurbished

Handy-Ladestationen Mobile charging stations
Ab sofort können Mobiltelefone an Ladestationen
am Flughafen kostenlos aufgeladen werden.
Die Charging-Stations wurden in Zusammenarbeit
mit Sony entwickelt und setzen in puncto
Design, Funktionalität und Bedienerfreundlichkeit
neue Massstäbe. Jede Station zählt sechs
Schliessfächer, in welchen die Handys für das
Laden deponiert werden können. Am Flughafen
Zürich sind sechzehn Stationen im Einsatz: vier
im öffentlichen und zwölf im nicht öffentlichen
Bereich nach der Bordkartenkontrolle.

Ab 1. April bietet das neue Konzept von Grieder viel Raum für
die Damen-, Herren- und Kinderkollektionen von Polo Ralph
Lauren sowie des Edellabels Zegna. Die Boutique im Airside
Center des Flughafens erfreut die Passagiere an 365 Tagen im
Jahr mit ihrer grossen Auswahl an erlesenen Designerstücken.
Auf Wunsch werden die Einkäufe über den Zoll hinweg nach
Hause geliefert.
As of 1 st April the new-look Grieder will offer a spacious sales
floor for women’s, men’s and children’s collections from Polo
Ralph Lauren and luxury label Zegna. Located in the Airside
Center, the boutique offers passengers a wide array of select
designer items 365 days a year. Purchases are available for
home delivery via customs upon request.
Visitors and passengers at the airport can now charge their
mobile phones free at dedicated stations. The stations, developed
together with Sony, set new benchmarks in terms of design,
functionality and user-friendliness. Each station features six
compartments, into which the mobile can be deposited for
charging. A total of 16 stations are positioned around Zurich
Airport: 4 are accessible to all visitors and 12 are available for
passengers beyond boarding pass control.

Während des Weltwirtschaftsforums (WEF), das vom 27. bis
31. Januar 2010 in Davos stattfand, wurden am Flughafen Zürich
über 1000 zusätzliche Flugbewegungen inklusive zahlreicher
Helikopterflüge verzeichnet. Ein besonderes Ereignis auch für
die Spotter: Rund 900 Flugzeugfans aus dem In- und Ausland
konnten während der WEF-Tage auf speziellen Bus-Touren die
exotischen Flugzeuge bestaunen.
During the World Economic Forum (WEF), which was held in
Davos from 27 th to 31 st January 2010, over 1000 additional
aircraft movements including numerous helicopter flights were
registered at Zurich Airport. A special event for spotters:
around 900 airplane fans from Switzerland and further
afield were able to marvel at the exotic aircraft during
the WEF thanks to specially provided bus tours.

Center 2 are now almost completely let again. The new tenants

tration and boarder control. The occupancy is now close to
capacity, confirming the appeal of Zurich Airport. Excellent accessibility
and a broad network of transport connections make the
airport an attractive location with unique benefits for companies.
Zurich has once again picked up the Business Traveller Award
for Europe’s best transfer airport. In the category “Transfer
Traffic Europe” Zurich finished top of the ranking ahead of
Munich Airport and London City Airport in second and third
respectively. Zurich Airport also rose by one place to second
in the category “Best Worldwide Airport” – just ahead of Dubai
International Airport and behind Singapore Changi Airport.

The “Zurich Airport Orchestra” recently released its new
album “The Sound of Zurich Airport”. The enthusiasm of the
musicians, most of whom are employees at the airport, shines
through with a swinging repertoire. The CD is available at the
Service Center as well as the information desks at Arrivals
1 and 2 at a price of CHF 25. Perfect as a business gift, a
souvenir or simply for your listening pleasure.
Flugverkehr 2009 trotzt der Krise Travellers defy 2009 crisis
Trotz wirtschaftlich anspruchsvollem Umfeld haben die Passagier-
zahlen am Flughafen Zürich kaum abgenommen. Im Jahr 2009
haben 21,9 Millionen Passagiere den Flughafen Zürich benutzt,
was einem Minus von 0,8% gegenüber dem Vorjahr
entspricht. Die Zahl der Lokalpassagiere nahm letztes Jahr um
3% auf 13,8 Millionen ab. Die Zahl der Umsteigepassagiere
hingegen nahm um 3,2% auf 8,0 Millionen zu.

Ab 2. Juni 2010 wird Swiss International Airlines die Strecke
Zürich-San Francisco im direkten Linienverkehr mit sechs
wöchentlichen Flügen bedienen. San Francisco gilt als eine
der wichtigsten Wirtschafts- und Tourismusdestinationen
Nordamerikas. Zudem ist die Stadt für zahlreiche Schweizer
Unternehmen von wachsender Bedeutung und belegt unter
den beliebtesten Tourismusdestinationen Platz 5.
From 2nd June 2010 Swiss International Airlines will operate
direct scheduled flights on the route Zurich-San Francisco six
times a week. San Francisco is ranked among the most important
business and tourist destinations in North America. Moreover
the city has become increasingly significant for countless
Swiss companies. It currently occupies 5th place in the world’s
most popular tourist destinations.
Despite economically demanding conditions over the last
year passenger numbers at Zurich Airport have barely been
affected. In 2009, 21.9 million passengers passed through
the airport, which corresponds to a decrease of just 0.8%
compared to 2008. The number of local passengers fell by
3% to 13.8 million, while the number of transfer passengers,
in contrast, rose 3.2% to 8 million.

1951 entschloss sich Türler Uhren & Juwelen, neben der etablierten Niederlassung
am Paradeplatz Zürich ein zweites Geschäft am Flughafen Zürich
zu eröffnen. Ein Geniestreich, wie sich herausstellen sollte. In 1951 Türler
Uhren & Juwelen made the decision to add to their established store on
Zurich’s Paradeplatz. A second store was opened, its location was Zurich
Airport and it was to prove to be a masterstroke.
„Als mein Vater verkündete, eine Baracke im damals in Bau stehenden
‚Flughof Kloten‘ zu beziehen und unsere Uhren an Pistenarbeiter
und Ingenieure zu verkaufen, reagierte die Öffentlichkeit mit Erstaunen“,
erzählt Inhaber Franz A. Türler gutgelaunt. Doch mit dem steilen
Aufschwung des Flughafens Zürich schnellten auch die Verkaufszahlen
des 1953 in der Transithalle einquartierten Uhren-, Schmuck-, und
Juwelenspezialisten in die Höhe. Die internationalen Reisenden trugen
den Namen „Türler Uhren & Juwelen“ in die Welt hinaus. 2004 eröffnete
Türler im neuen Airside Terminal eine 450 Quadratmeter grosse
Verkaufsfläche und wurde somit zum grössten Schweizer Schaufenster
für Uhren, Schmuck und Juwelen am Flughafen Zürich. Das Erfolgsgeheimnis
ortet Franz Türler im Kundenservice: „Neben den Faktoren
Qualität, Tradition und Nachhaltigkeit muss stets das Interesse

in what was then the construction site of
‘Flughof Kloten’ the public was shocked”,
explains owner Franz A. Türler in a jovial
mood. Yet with the dramatic boom of Zurich
Airport, the sales followed in similar fashion.
In 2004 the company opened its doors in
the new Airside Terminal, boasting 450 m2 of sales floor. Franz Türler places the secret
to success in customer service: “Alongside
quality, tradition and sustainability, the interests
of the customer must be continuously

Sekunde, ein Sonnenuntergang, ein ganzes Leben. Dem wollten wir
Rechnung tragen.“
Seine leidenschaftliche Faszination für Zeitmessung lag auch der
Erschaffung des „Modells des Kosmos“ zu Grunde, der bis dato
kompliziertesten astronomischen Uhr der Welt. Die 220 cm hohe
und 160 kg schwere Uhr besteht u. a. aus einem Antriebsteil, einem
Globus, Kalendarium, Horizont, Tellurium und Planetarium. 25 794
Sonnenjahre dauert eine einzige platonische Umdrehung – ganz im
Sinne von Franz Türler: „Neben einem gesunden Unternehmen wollte
ich meinen Nachkommen ein einmaliges Vermächtnis hinterlassen.
Denn Uhren sind Kult und werden es wohl immer bleiben.“

for measuring time was behind the creation
of “The Model of the Cosmos” the most
complicated astronomical clock in the
world. At 220 cm high and weighing in at
160 kg, the clock consists, amongst other
components, of a drive mechanism, a globe,
a perpetual calendar, a horizon, tellurion and
a planetarium. The clock performs one full
revolution every 25 794 years – just as Franz
Türler intended: “In addition to a healthy
business I wanted to leave my successors
with a unique legacy. After all, watches have
always been and will always be cult items.”

Bertrand Piccard umkreiste 1999 als erster Mensch in einem Heissluftballon
ohne Zwischenhalt die Erde. 2012 will er die Welt erneut umrunden – mit
Solar Impulse HB-SIA, einem ausschliesslich durch Sonnenenergie angetriebenen
Flugzeug. In 1999 Bertrand Piccard became the first person to
complete an uninterrupted circumnavigation of the globe in a hot-air balloon.
In 2012 he wants to repeat the feat with the Solar Impulse HB-SIA – an
aircraft powered exclusively by the sun’s rays.

Wie sieht der Zeitplan für Ihren Solarflug aus?
Läuft alles nach Plan, starten André Borschberg und ich im Jahr
2011 zum Flug über den Atlantik. Nach dieser Hauptprobe wollen
wir 2012 in Dubai zur Erdumrundung abheben. Das Projekt hat
etwas Verspätung, weil die technischen Anforderungen komplizierter
sind als erwartet.
Welche sind die grössten Herausforderungen?
Die Flügelspannweite von 61 Metern entspricht jener eines Airbus
A340, und die Solarzellen auf den Flügelflächen sind extrem dünn.
Das grösste Problem wird sein, in der Nacht mit der am Vortag
gespeicherten Energie zu fliegen.
Liegt der Familie Piccard die Abenteuerlust im Blut? Ihr Grossvater
stellte als Flugpionier zahlreiche Rekorde auf, und Ihr Vater
war Weltrekordhalter im Tiefseetauchen ...
Die Pioniertaten meines Vaters und Grossvaters waren für mich
prägend. Es war toll, als Knirps mit meinem Vater nach Florida zu
fliegen, wo er mit seinem Tauchboot „Ben Franklin“ den Golfstrom
erforschte. Meine Mutter hingegen konnte wunderbar Klavier spielen.
Gerade sie brachte mir auf spirituellem und philosophischem
Gebiet viel zu Bewusstsein. Neben der Ballonfahrt beschäftigte
ich mich auch immer mit übersinnlichen und philanthropischen
Lebensaspekten. Deshalb studierte ich Medizin und wurde Psychiater.
Ich wollte das menschliche Wesen erforschen mit dem Ziel, die
Natur und das Leben besser zu beherrschen.
Haben Sie als Abenteurer und Familienvater zwei Seelen in Ihrer Brust?
Meine Familie war immer an meinen Abenteuern beteiligt, meine Frau
Michèle sogar aktiv in der Ballonequipe. Sicherlich hatten meine Frau
und Kinder auch manchmal Angst, aber schlussendlich teilen sie mit
mir Erfahrungen, an die sie sich ihr ganzes Leben erinnern werden.
How is the schedule for your solar
flight looking?
If everything goes to plan, André Borschberg
and I will begin with a flight across the Atlantic
in 2011. Following this dress rehearsal we
hope to take off a year later in Dubai to fly
around the world. The project is a little delayed,
as the technical demands have proven
more complicated than expected.
What are the greatest challenges?
The wingspan of 61 metres equals that of
an Airbus A340, and the solar cells on the
surface of the wings are extremely thin. The
biggest problem, however, will come when
flying at night on the energy stored up during
the previous day.
Does the Piccard family have a spirit for
adventure in its blood? Your grandfather
set numerous records as an aviation
pioneer, and your father was the world
record holder in deep-sea diving …
The pioneering deeds of my father and
grandfather made a significant impression
on me. As a toddler it was fantastic to fly
to with my father Florida where he explored
the Gulf Stream with his diving boat “Ben
Franklin”. My mother, in contrast, could play
the piano beautifully, and she introduced me
to spirituality and philosophy. In addition to
piloting balloons I regularly occupied myself
with transcendental and philanthropic
aspects of life. For this reason I studied
medicine and became a psychiatrist.

Ist Ihnen die Pionierrolle wichtig?
Erster zu sein führt, unweigerlich zu einem neuen Ergebnis und
damit verbunden zu einer Offenbarung, die für weitere Entwicklungen
nützlich ist. Eigentlich sollte jeder in seinem Leben ständig die
Augen offenhalten, um in irgendeiner Form Pionier zu werden.
Welche Rolle spielen die ökologischen Aspekte bei Ihren Projekten?
Das Solarflugzeug-Projekt steht ganz im Dienste der Umwelt, mit dem
Ziel, das riesige Potenzial an erneuerbaren Energien aufzuzeigen und
die Öffentlichkeit für wirtschaftlich nützliche und nachhaltige Energie-
Entwicklungstechnologien zu begeistern. Eine solche Energieförderung
zerstört die Umwelt nicht und erlaubt der Menschheit
trotzdem eine gleichwertige Lebensqualität. Ich möchte aufzeigen,
dass nur ein Wechsel unseres gegenwärtigen Umgangs mit Konsum,
Produktion und Luftverschmutzung auf Dauer rentabel sein kann.
Können wir dereinst auch Rekorde von Ihren Kindern erwarten?
Wir werden sehen. Meine Töchter Estelle, Oriane und Solange sind erst
im Teenageralter und haben sich noch in keine spezifische Richtung
entwickelt.

Bertrand Piccard, 1958 in Lausanne geboren, zählte bereits mit 16
Jahren zu den europäischen Deltaflug-Pionieren. Er war Europameister
im Kunstfliegen und überquerte als erster die Alpen im
Ultraleichtflugzeug. Piccard studierte Medizin, spezialisierte sich auf
Psychiatrie und führt eine Praxis in Lausanne. Mit Vorträgen zeigt
er die Synergien zwischen seinem Ballonflug und Kompetenzentwicklung
sowie Problembewältigung auf.
Adventurer and scientist
Bertrand Piccard, born in 1958 in Lausanne, belonged to the European
delta wing pioneers at just 16 years of age. He was European
Champion in hang-glider acrobatics and was the first to cross the Alps
in a microlight. Piccard studied medicine, specialised in psychiatry and
opened a practice in Lausanne. He holds lectures highlighting the
synergies between his balloon flight and competence development,
as well as problem solving.

I wanted to study the human being with the
aim of being able to command nature and
life better.
As an adventurer and family man are you
sometimes torn between the two?
My family has always been involved in my
adventures – my wife Michèle was even a
member of the balloon team. Of course, fear
sometimes gets the better of my wife and
children, however they ultimately share the
experiences with me, and these experiences
will be remembered forever.
Is it important to you to be a pioneer?
Being the first to achieve something in-
evitably leads to a new experience and an
associated revelation that is valuable for further
development. I believe that everyone should
continuously keep their eyes open in life in order
to become a pioneer in some shape or form.
What role do ecological aspects play in your
projects?
The solar flight project solely serves the
environment, with the objective of highlighting
the potential of renewable energies and
awaking enthusiasm among the public for
economically valuable and sustainable energy
development technologies. Utilising such
energy sources does not lead to the destruction
of the environment, but instead
grants humanity a homogenous quality of
life. I want to demonstrate that a single shift
in our current attitudes towards consumption,
production and air pollution can prove profitable
in the long run.
Can we someday expect records from your
children?
We’ll see. My daughters Estelle, Oriane and
Solange are still teenagers, and have yet to
choose their paths in life.

Wer hat die Schokolade erfunden? Natürlich die Schweizer: 1879
entwickelte der Berner Rodolphe Lindt zur Herstellung von Schokolade
das Conchierverfahren. Erst durch das lange Rühren erhält die
bis dahin brüchig-sandige Konsistenz der eher bitter schmeckenden
Kakaomasse die heissgeliebte, feincremige und zartschmelzende
Struktur, welche so himmlisch auf der Zunge zergeht.
Lindts Conchiermaschine trug zusammen mit der berühmten Alpenmilch
wesentlich zum Weltruf der Schweizer Schokolade bei. Wichtigsten
Bestandteil zur Schokolade liefern zwar schon 1528 durch spanische
Eroberer importierte Kakaobohnen, aber kein Land hat sich die Vermarktung
der süssen Verführung so gekonnt und fantasievoll auf die
Fahne geschrieben wie die Schweiz. Firmen und Marken wie Sprüngli,
Lindt, Frey, Beschle, Toblerone, Nestlé und Goldkenn setzen alles daran,
den Ruhm der Schweizer Schokolade im In- und Ausland zu mehren.

Who invented chocolate? The Swiss of
course! In 1879, Rodolphe Lindt from Bern
developed the conching process for the production
of chocolate. Only by continuously
mixing the hitherto brittle-gritty consistency
does the rather bitter tasting cocoa mass get
its beloved, creamy composition.
Lindt’s conching device, along with the
famous Swiss alpine milk, contributed signifi-
cantly to the international reputation of Swiss
chocolate. The most important ingredient
for chocolate, the cocoa bean was imported
as early as 1528 by Spanish conquerors,
yet no other country committed itself to the
commercialisation of this sweet temptation

auf – was die Schweizer zu den weltweit fleissigsten Schokoladekonsumenten
werden lässt. Mit 12,4 Kilo Schokolade pro Kopf und
Jahr lassen sie deutsche (11,4), englische (10,4) oder belgische
(10,1) Süssmäuler locker hinter sich. Bisher wurde es der asiatischen
Milchunverträglichkeit zugeschrieben, dass sich die Japaner am
wenigstens (2,2) für die braune Leckerei begeistern konnten. Allerdings
holen sie schnell auf, zusammen mit den Chinesen und den
Arabern: Dort findet man die extravagantesten Schokoladeboutiquen.
Erstaunlicherweise nahm der Schokoladenkonsum im letzten Jahr nicht
ab, trotz Rezession – oder gerade wegen der Rezession? Schokolade
macht glücklich, müde Männer munter, tröstet bei Kummer und spendet
Energie, kann aber auch süchtig machen – obwohl gerade schwarze
Schokolade vorbeugend gegen Herzerkrankungen wirksam sein soll.
Wussten Sie übrigens, dass unsere Schokolade im Ausland immer
anders schmeckt als in der Schweiz? Die Zutaten werden je nach
landesüblichem Geschmack speziell für den Export zusammengestellt.
In der Schweiz wird die erstmals im Jahr 1875 von Henri
Nestlé hergestellte Milch-Schokolade bevorzugt – womit geschickt
ein anderes wichtiges Schweizer Erzeugnis, Milch, propagiert wird.
Neuerdings geht der Geschmackstrend in Richtung exotisch feuriger
Gewürze wie Chili, Zimt, Meersalz, Pfeffer, Ingwer oder Hot Mango. In
Sachen schwarze Schokolade droht allmählich Konkurrenz aus Belgien
und Italien. Unverändert beliebt bei Gross und Klein hingegen sind
seit jeher die zauberhaften kleinen Kreationen spezialisierter Konditoreien
und Geschäfte – und was wäre da typischer als die knusprigen,
luftigen, innen zartschmelzenden „Luxemburgerli“ von Sprüngli? Das
süsse Geheimnis der Schweiz: Die Tradition zu bewahren und sie
dennoch immer wieder neu zu interpretieren.

mit dem Airbus A380 ins Programm aufnehmen, wird ein neues Kapitel in der
Schweizer Fluggeschichte aufgeschlagen. Denn welche Destination wäre für
den Giganten der Lüfte geeigneter als Singapur, die Stadt der Superlative?
When Singapore Airlines officially introduces the route Zurich–Singapore with the
new Airbus A380 on 28th March 2010, a new chapter in the book of Swiss
aviation history will be opened. And what destination could be more suitable
for this giant of the air than Singapore, city of superlatives?

Das weltgrösste Riesenrad Singapore Flyer in der berühmten
Skyline Singapurs erhält Konkurrenz: Etwa zeitgleich mit der Inbe-
triebnahme des Airbus A380 auf der Strecke Zürich–Singapur wird
an der Marina Bay der riesige Casinokomplex „Marina Bay Sands“
eröffnet. Das neue Glücksspielmekka beherbergt 1000 Spieltische
and 1400 Glücksmaschinen. Zum Casino gehören drei 55 Stockwerke-hohe
Hoteltürme, die durch eine 1 Hektar grosse Dachterrasse,
den sogenannten SkyPark, miteinander verbunden sind.
Der Swimmingpool und die Bars auf der parkähnlichen Plattform
gewähren eine einmalige Aussicht auf die wichtigste Finanzmetropole
Südostasiens – während die Wolken und der landende
oder abhebende Airbus A380 zum Greifen nahe scheinen. Nicht
weniger als 2500 Suiten und Hotelzimmer sind in den 200-Meter-hohen
Hotels untergebracht. Zwei Theater, ein Einkaufszentrum mit den
angesagtesten Luxuslabels, Gourmetrestaurants, Nachtclubs und ein
19 000 Quadratmeter grosses Kunst- und Wissenschaftsmuseum
in Form eines Lotus komplettieren das gigantische Gesamtbild.
Formel-1-Rennen im Scheinwerferlicht
Vom SkyPark aus geniesst man eine grandiose Aussicht auf eine
weitere Attraktion Singapurs: den Marina Bay Circuit, die Rennstrecke
des spektakulären Grossen Preises von Singapur. Das einzige
Nachtrennen der Formel 1 wird erst seit 2008 durchgeführt und
wird zu 70% auf öffentlichen Strassen ausgetragen. Wer sich nach
etwas mehr Ruhe sehnt, sucht sich einen lauschiges Strandplätzchen
auf der nur fünf-Quadratkilometer-grossen Insel Sentosa, die vor
der Küste Singapurs liegt.
Romantik stellt sich am Abend bei einem Candlelight-Dinner im
preisgekrönten Gourmet-Restaurant „The Cliff at The Sentosa Resort“
ein, dessen Meeresfrüchte-Kreationen auf einer Klippe mit Blick auf
das südchinesische Meer serviert werden.

famous skyline, has competition: deployment

Zurich-Singapore will coincide with the
grand opening of the giant casino Marina
Bay Sands in Marina Bay. This new gambling
mecca will house 1000 gaming tables and
1400 slot machines. Included in the casino
complex are three 55-storey hotel towers,
which are connected by a spectacular roof
terrace that measures one hectare and is
aptly called SkyPark. The swimming pool
and bars situated on the park-like platform
provides guests with a unique view of South
East Asia’s most important finance hub below,
while the clouds and arriving or departing
Airbus A380 above seem within touching
distance. The 200-metre-high hotels offer no
fewer than 2500 suites and rooms. Two theatres,
a shopping mall with the latest luxury
labels, gourmet restaurants, nightclubs and a
19 000 square metre arts and sciences museum
in the shape of a lotus complete the
vast complex.

Zurück auf dem Festland steht der Besuch des legendären „Raffles
Hotel Singapore“ an, ein nach Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, dem
Gründer von Singapur, benanntes Luxushotel im Kolonialstil. Das
1987 zum Nationaldenkmal erhobene „Raffles Hotel“ ist unter
anderem dafür bekannt, dass hier um 1915 der ebenfalls legendäre
Singapore-Sling erfunden wurde, ein Cocktail, der auf Gin und Cherry

Trotzdem kann man in Singapur mit weissen Tigern und wilden Tieren

im Zoo von Singapur oder während eines Besuchs im Jurong Bird
Park. Ob sich Singapore Airlines bei der Wahl des Airbus A380 von
den über 600 Vogelarten haben inspirieren lassen, ist nicht überliefert.
Doch eines ist sicher: Sowohl das neuartige Flugerlebnis mit

streets. The only Formula 1 race to be held
at night has only been a part of the race
calendar since 2008. Those with a quieter
disposition can find a cosy spot on the island
Sentosa, which measures a petite five square
kilometres and lies just off the coast of
Singapore. Romance could be on the cards
in the evening at a candlelight dinner in

Am 20. und 21. Januar 2010 weilte ein Airbus A380 erstmals am Flughafen
Zürich. Hauptgrund für den Besuch waren aber nicht die unzähligen Fans, sondern
Tests. Für einen regelmässigen Linienflugbetrieb braucht der Flughafen Zürich
nämlich eine Zertifizierung. On 20th and 21st January 2010 an Airbus A380
graced Zurich Airport for the very first time. Yet the crowds of fans were not
the main reason for the giant’s visit. Tests were the order of the stay for the airport
requires certification before regular scheduled flight operations may commence.
Der Publikumsanlass „Welcome A380“ war ein voller Erfolg. Nach
der Landung um 08.21 Uhr haben sich über 22 000 Flugzeugbegeisterte
den Riesenvogel aus nächster Nähe angeschaut. Für den
Anlass wurde am Flughafen Zürich eigens ein Areal ausgezäunt.
Tausende verfolgten die Landung an verschiedenen Plätzen rund
um den Flughafen. Rund 140 Medienschaffende aus dem In- und
Ausland waren vor Ort. Selbst Flugpionier Bertrand Piccard, der
zufällig für eine Sitzung mit dem Flughafendirektor Thomas Kern
am Flughafen Zürich weilte, liess sich von der Faszination Fliegen
anstecken und schaute sich den Riesenvogel aus der Nähe an.

The public occasion dubbed “Welcome A380”
was a tremendous success. After landing at
8.21 a.m. the giant was soon under the close
inspection of over 22 000 aviation enthusiasts. A
dedicated area was specially fenced off at Zurich
Airport for the event, while thousands of
onlookers followed the landing from various
lookout points around the airport. Around 140
domestic and international media representatives
were also on site. Even aviation pioneer Bertrand

Am Nachmittag und während der Nacht wurden dann verschiedene
Tests durchgeführt. Dabei wurde geprüft, ob die Berechnungen
bezüglich Hindernisfreiheit und Auswirkungen auf die Navigations-
systeme korrekt sind und dass Abfertigung, Betankung, Enteisung
und Energieversorgung problemlos funktionieren. Diese Tests sind
eine Auflage des Bundesamts für Zivilluftfahrt (BAZL), damit der
Betrieb von neuen, grösseren Flugzeugtypen auf einem Flughafen
zugelassen werden kann. Gemäss Testkoordinatoren sind die vorläufigen
Testergebnisse zufriedenstellend verlaufen. Mit einer Zertifizierung
seitens BAZL rechnet man bis spätestens 28. März 2010.

Singapore Airlines ab Sommerflugplan mit Airbus A380 ab Zürich
Ab voraussichtlich 28. März 2010 will Singapore Airlines auf der
Strecke Zürich–Singapur für den täglichen Linienverkehr einen
Airbus A380 einsetzen. Zürich wäre somit nebst Paris Charles de
Gaulle und London Heathrow der dritte Flughafen Europas, der von
einem Airbus A380 im Linienverkehr angeflogen wird.

Piccard, who was coincidentally at the airport
for a meeting with Airport Director Thomas
Kern, couldn’t resist temptation and took it upon
himself to take a closer look at the huge aircraft.
Tests for certification
Various tests were carried out in the afternoon
and throughout the night. As part of the
certification, tests were undertaken to assess
whether calculations concerning potential
obstacles and effects on the navigation
systems were correct, and that turn-around,
refuelling, de-icing and power supply functioned
without problem. The tests represent
an obligation of The Federal Office for Civil
Aviation (FOCA), which must be carried out
before new and larger aircraft are permitted to
operate at an airport. According to test coordinators
the preliminary results are satisfactory.
Certification from the FOCA is expected to be
awarded by 28th March 2010 at the latest.
Singapore Airlines in summer schedule with

From March 28th 2010 Singapore Airlines
plans to deploy an Airbus A380 for daily
scheduled flights from Zurich to Singapore.
Once in operation, Zurich will become
just the third airport in Europe, after Paris
Charles de Gaulle and London Heathrow, to
be visited regularly by the Airbus A380 in

funktionieren, wenn morgens um sechs Uhr der Flugbetrieb einsetzt.
Die Wartung der Pistenbefeuerung ist eine aufwendige und spannende Arbeit.
Every single one of the 11000 lights that adorn the runways and taxiways
at Zurich Airport must be in full working order when operations begin at 6 a.m.
Maintenance of the runway lighting is a time-consuming yet exciting job.
Der Ausdruck „Befeuerung“ stammt ursprünglich aus der Schifffahrt.
Das so genannte Leuchtfeuer wurde zur Markierung von
Hafeneinfahrten benutzt. Was sich in der Schifffahrt bewährt hatte,
wurde später von der Luftfahrt übernommen. Die ortsfesten Lichtsignale
dienen heutzutage den Flugzeugen zur Orientierung. Am
Flughafen Zürich werden sie täglich kontrolliert und repariert, noch
bevor der Flugbetrieb losgeht.

Flaming beacons were originally used to aid
maritime navigation, whereby such beacons
marked the entrances to harbours. This tried
and tested maritime system was later adopted
by aviation. Nowadays electric lights serve
pilots as a points of orientation, and these
lights are checked and repaired on a daily
basis at Zurich Airport in the early hours
before the regular flight schedule commences.

Für beste Lichtverhältnisse sorgen
Rund dreissig verschiedene Lampentypen erleuchten die Pisten,
genau auf die natürlichen Lichtverhältnisse abgestimmt, denn die
Piloten müssen die Pisten unter allen Wetterbedingungen erkennen
können. Deshalb leuchten die Pistenfeuer heller, wenn die Sonne
scheint. Die Lichtstärke wird vom Kontrollturm aus gesteuert und ist
auf fünf Stufen zwischen 1 und 100 Prozent verstellbar.
Experten am Werk
Am einwandfreien Funktionieren der Pistenbefeuerung sind zahlreiche
Fachpersonen beteiligt. Bei einem Preis von 300 bis 2500
Schweizer Franken will die Abteilung Airfield Maintenance,
welche für den Unterhalt zuständig ist, die Lichtkörper nicht
einfach entsorgen, sondern pflegt sie sorgfältig. Zur Pflege
gehören vor allem das Erkennen und die Reparatur von Defekten,
Schmutz und Wasserschäden an den Lichtern und Stromleitungen.
Die Mitarbeitenden brauchen auf ihren Kontrollfahrten
deshalb ein geübtes Auge, um auch kleinste Unregelmässigkeiten
zu erspähen. Dank modernen Leuchtmitteln funktioniert die
Pistenbefeuerung seit 2009 mit 30 Prozent weniger Leistung
bei gleicher Lichtmenge. Dadurch wird jährlich eine Strommenge
von 80 Mwh eingespart, was dem Stromverbrauch von 25 bis 30
Einfamilienhäusern entspricht.

Around 30 different types of lights illuminate
the runways with precisely the correct
intensity to suit the natural light conditions,
as pilots must be able to clearly locate the
runways in any weather. Therefore the lights
burn brighter when the sun is shining. The
intensity of the lights, which have five
settings ranging from 1% to 100%, is determined
by the control tower.
Experts at work
Countless experts are involved in ensuring
that the runway lighting functions error
free. Considering each light costs between
300 and 2500 Swiss francs, the Airport
Maintenance department, which is directly
responsible for maintenance, sees to it
that the lights are not just disposed of, but
instead carefully looked after. Identifying and
repairing defects is critical, while dirt and
water damage to the lights and cables are
also issues of importance. As a result, the
department’s employees need a trained eye
when out on their checks to spot even the
smallest of irregularities.
Since 2009 the runway lighting has been
able to produce the same effects, whilst
using 30% less energy thanks to modern
lamps. Therefore 80 MWh of electricity is
saved every year – an amount which corresponds
to the electricity needs of 25 to 30
family households.

Zürich–Flughafen. Unter uns steht ein Airbus A340, der im Hangar
von SR Technics einem sogenannten Intermediate Layover-Check, das
heisst einer Überholung, die alle sechs Jahre fällig ist, unterzogen wird.
Das Flugzeug präsentiert sich in ganz ungewohntem Kleid, denn wo
kürzlich die Lackierung der SWISS war, ist nun blankes Metall; wo
eben noch Verschalungen und Mobiliar im Innenraum der Maschine
angebracht waren, zeigen sich unzählige Käbelchen und Schrauben.
Vergleichbar mit einem grossen Service beim Auto ist es auch für ein
Flugzeug unabdingbar, regelmässig gewartet und gepflegt zu werden.
Zu den Aufgaben während einer Standzeit – dem Zeitraum, in dem
ein Flugzeug gewartet wird – gehören Servicearbeiten wie Ölwechsel,
Reparaturen, Komponentenwechsel oder auch Neulackierungen.
Dafür verantwortlich, dass diese Überholungen perfekt vonstatten
gehen, ist Chris Bauer, seines Zeichens Senior Project Manager
Ground Time Planning. Vom ersten Kontakt mit dem Kunden über
die genaue Ablaufplanung bis hin zu Qualitätsprüfung und Dokumentation
eines Auftrages plant und koordiniert Chris Bauer alle
Vorgänge mit den involvierten Stellen.

Zurich Airport. Beneath us in the SR Technics
Hangar stands an Airbus A340, undergoing
a so-called ‘Intermediate Layover-Check’, a
maintenance procedure which is due every
six years. The aeroplane presents itself
today in a totally unfamiliar guise, the SWISS
colours are replaced by blank metal and
the casing and furnishings common to the
aeroplane’s interior have been replaced by
countless cables and screws. Just as a car
needs a thorough service, an aeroplane must
also be regularly maintained and serviced.
Some of the tasks that are completed during
this holding time – the time period in which
the aeroplane is maintained – are services
such as oil change, repairs, the replacement
of components and new paintwork.

Er arbeitet mit vielen verschiedenen Menschen zusammen: Kunden,
Einkäufer, Ingenieure, Mechaniker. Diese vielseitige Zusammenarbeit
schätzt er sehr. Ausserdem reizt ihn die Herausforderung,
in einem komplexen interdisziplinären Umfeld Bestleistungen zu
erbringen. „In einem Metier, das finanziell ausgesprochen aufwendig
ist, spielen Präzision, optimale Qualität und Effizienz eine grosse
Rolle“, erklärt Bauer. Denn für den Kunden, das heisst die Fluggesellschaften,
hat die punktgenaue Ablieferung der Flugzeuge in
perfektem Zustand oberste Priorität.
Für den Check am Airbus bleiben denn auch insgesamt nur drei
Wochen, in denen zwischen 12 000 und 15 000 Mannstunden
aufgewendet werden. Welch logistischer Aufwand sich hinter
diesem Auftrag verbirgt, zeigt eine übergrosse Grafik, die genau
festhält, zu welchem Zeitpunkt was wo gemacht werden muss, um
den engen Zeitplan einhalten zu können.
Und tatsächlich: Das Flugzeug, das derzeit im Hangar von SR Technics
auf Herz und Nieren überprüft wird, hebt in Kürze wieder ab, um
uns über die Wolken zu tragen.
The man responsible for ensuring that this
maintenance work is perfectly carried out is
the ‘Senior Project Manager Ground Time
Planning’, Chris Bauer. From his first contact
with the customer, where he discusses the
exact planning sequence, right down to the
final quality inspection and documentation
work, Chris Bauer plans and coordinates all
the operations on each part. He works with
many different people: customers, buyers,
engineers and mechanics and he thoroughly
appreciates this teamwork. Furthermore, he
relishes the challenge of having to be at his
best in such a complex, interdisciplinary field.
“In a profession which is markedly costly,
precision, optimal quality and efficiency
play a very important role,” explains Bauer.
For customers, in other words the airline
companies, the handover of aeroplanes
punctually and in perfect condition is the
highest of priorities.
The maintenance of the airbus must be com-
pleted within three weeks, during which
time a total of between 12 000 and 15 000
man hours will be spent on the job. The
logistical complexity behind such a project is
displayed by an oversized diagram which
precisely pinpoints what should be done
where and when. This ensures that the strict
schedule is adhered to.
Sure enough, the aeroplane currently being put
through its paces in the hangar will very soon
lift off to carry us over the clouds once again.

Belle-Epoque-Stil eingerichtet. Die fünfzig noblen Suiten
mit grandiosem Ausblick auf die französischen Alpen und der
für Hochzeiten prädestinierte „Salon Viennois“ sind einzigartiges
Zeugnis seiner Schaffenskunst. Beeindruckend sind auch das
Wellness-Center „Swiss Bellefontaine“ und der Orientalische Salon
neben dem Empfang, wo sich Maître de Maison Christopher
Rudolph und sein Vertreter Carmine D’Onofrio oft gemeinsam

alike. The Grand Hôtel du Lac in Vevey also
belongs to the Relais & Châteaux group and was
renovated in 2006 by the French star designer
Pierre-Ives Rochon, who restored the Belle
Epoque style, paying very careful attention to
detail. The 50 suites with grandiose views
of the French Alps as well as the “Salon
Viennois”, predestined for weddings, are
prime examples of Rochon’s unique genius.
Equally impressive are the heath centre
“Swiss Bellefontaine” and the oriental parlour,
where Maître de Maison Christopher Rudolph
and his deputy Carmine D’Onofrio can often
be seen enjoying a pot of tea with guests.

Wein aus dem UNESCO-Welterbe Lavaux
Im Gault-Millau-Restaurant „Les Saisons“ mit idyllischem Blick auf die
Seepromenade wird eigens von einem Dorffischer gefangenes „Filet
de Perche“ serviert. Aus dem UNESCO Welterbe Lavaux werden die
erlesensten Weine empfohlen, die auch bei einer Degustation bei
Patrick Fonjallaz hoch über dem Lac Léman degustiert werden
können. Auf der Fahrt durch die malerischen Rebberge mit dem

2 EL helle Sojasauce
2 EL Austernsauce
4 EL Gemüsebouillon
2 g Zucker
2 g gemahlener weisser
Pfeffer
2 g Peperoncini, in Streifen
2 g frisches Koriandergrün
Zubereitung
Die Hälfte des Öls im Wok erhitzen. Pouletbruststreifen scharf
anbraten, herausnehmen und beiseite stellen. Das restliche
Öl im selben Wok erhitzen, Champignons, Zwiebeln, Sellerie,
Frühlingszwiebeln und Lauch zugeben und anbraten. Mit Bouillon
ablöschen. Soja- und Austernsauce beifügen. Gemüse knackig
dünsten, anschliessend Pouletbruststreifen, Cashewnüsse und
Chilischoten zugeben, erhitzen und mit Zucker und Pfeffer
abschmecken. Anrichten, mit Koriandergrün und Peperoncinistreifen
garnieren. Dazu gekochten Jasmin- oder Basmatireis
reichen – und geniessen.

140g chicken breast, sliced
50 g onions, peeled, sliced
50 g mushrooms, washed, in
quarters
50 g roasted cashew nuts
20 g Thai celery, washed,
sliced (alternatively
celery stalks)
20 g spring onions, washed,
sliced
10 g leeks, washed, sliced
10 g dried red chillies, in
0.5 cm long pieces
2 tbsp. dark soy sauce
2 tbsp. light soy sauce
2 tbsp. oyster sauce
4 tbsp. vegetable stock
2 g sugar
2 g ground white pepper
2 g peperoncini, sliced
2 g fresh coriander leaves
Preparation:
Heat half the oil in the wok. Sauté sliced chicken breast,
remove from wok and put aside. Heat the remaining oil in the
same wok, add mushrooms, onions, celery, spring onions and
leeks and fry. Douse with stock. Add soy and oyster sauce. Stir
fry vegetables, then add chicken breast strips, cashew nuts
and chillies, heat up and season with sugar and pepper. Serve
and garnish with fresh coriander leaves and sliced peperoncini.
Serve with boiled jasmine or basmati rice. Enjoy!

PRAWN AND ASPARAGUS RAVIOLI (SERVES 4)
RavIOlI
Ravioli mit Crevetten-Spargel-Füllung (4 Personen)
Füllung und Sauce:
500 g Black-Tiger-Crevetten
800 g grüne Spargeln
8 Cherry-Tomaten
5 dl Halbrahm
20 g Butter
5 Tropfen Zitronensaft
¼ Bund Dill
20 g geriebener Parmesan
1 EL Balsamico-Essig
Salz und Pfeffer
Teig:
400 g Weissmehl
3 Eier
2 EL Olivenöl
Zubereitung Füllung und Sauce
Die Spargeln schälen und kurz in Salzwasser kochen. Sud und
Spargelspitzen für die Sauce aufheben. Die Spargeln und die Hälfte
der Crevetten kleinschneiden. Crevetten in Butter anbraten, mit
Zitronensaft ablöschen. Den Halbrahm zusammen mit Spargeln,
Crevetten, Dill, Salz, Pfeffer und Parmesan zu einer dickflüssigen
Masse einkochen. Danach abkühlen lassen. Für die Sauce die
andere Hälfte der Crevetten in Butter anbraten. Spargelspitzen und
Cherry-Tomaten zugeben und mit Spargelsud und Balsamico-Essig
ablöschen. Nach Belieben mit Salz und Pfeffer abschmecken.
Zubereitung Teig
Zutaten verkneten und den Teig dünn auswallen. Kleine Kreise
oder Quadrate ausstechen. Füllung darauf verteilen, die Ränder
mit Wasser benetzen und zum Schliessen zusammendrücken.
Während 3 bis 4 Minuten al dente kochen, anrichten und Sauce
darübergeben.

1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar

Dough:
400 g white flour
3 eggs
2 tbsp. olive oil
Preparation – Filling and Sauce:
Trim the asparagus and blanch in salt water. Set aside cooking
water and tips for the sauce. Cut the asparagus and half of the
shrimps into small pieces. Fry prawns in butter, pour in lemon
juice. Reduce single cream, asparagus, prawns, dill, salt, pepper
and Parmesan cheese to a thick consistency. Leave to cool. For
the sauce, fry the remaining prawns in butter. Add asparagus tips
and cherry tomatoes. Douse with asparagus cooking water and
balsamic vinegar. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Preparation – Dough:
Combine ingredients, knead dough, and roll into a thin sheet. Cut
out small round or square shapes. Divide filling mixture between
shapes, wet the ravioli edges with water and press together firmly
to seal. Cook ravioli in salt water for 3 to 4 minutes, serve and
cover with sauce.
