STUDYING IT’S SAD but true that the reason you’re at university is to study. Fortunately, the more you practise it, the easier settling down to work becomes. Since St. Hugh’s is an Oxford College, a lot of your work will revolve around tutorials. At least once per week, you’ll meet with your tutors to discuss work, ideas and progress. Whilst this may sound rather dull, it is actually quite exciting. It’s an opportunity for you to spend time with an expert in the field you’re studying, and they spend the time talking to you about how to improve your own work. In many cases, your tutors will have written books or articles that appear on your reading lists. These are clearly the most important ones to read! What happens in tutorials, and the work required for them, varies across the subjects, but is usually either an essay or worksheets. You therefore have these to do alongside the lecture courses you attend.
One of the major differences between university and sixth form is that you can choose when to do the work, as long as it’s handed in on time. Not only this, but you can do it wherever you like too! St. Hugh’s has one of the largest, and best-stocked, College libraries in Oxford, with over 100,000 volumes, two full-time librarians, and 24 hour access. The College also has a commitment to maintaining the standard of the library, and if you can’t find a book there that you particularly need, the staff are only too happy to help you. In addition to the books and periodicals, the lower floor of the library has wireless internet access, and all bedrooms are connected to the University network, which offers one of the fastest internet connections in the country.
