vocational placement as part of their training. This
is a great opportunity for students to experience a
real work environment with an employer, making
Australia assisted him to be work ready and he
has been quick in picking up tasks given to him
on the worksite. He shows initiative and is always
keen to do his best. If a position comes up in the
future, I would consider taking him on as one of
my workers.”
Darryl Picks – Builder, Trim Homes
Jonil Palma (Philippines) with his employer
“Training at SkillsTech Australia and doing a
vocational placement at Torque Toyota Strathpine
has been very positive The work conditions are
good and their staff assisted me in learning many
different aspects of becoming a mechanic. The
training I received at SkillsTech Australia gave me
good knowledge that I can take to any workplace.
After this course I would love to go on to working
full-time with an Australian company so I can
gain further knowledge and skills.”
Jonil Palma
Filipino automotive student
Jinhwa Lee (Korea) with his employer
“Our experience in having an international student
doing vocational placement has been a positive
What our students say
“I came to SkillsTech Australia because I wanted
were very friendly and helped me in my course.
I completed my Vocational Placement with Auto
Service and they have offered to sponsor me and
provide full-time employment with them when I
complete my course. This is what I have always
wanted.”
“The teachers at SkillsTech Australia all have
industry currency and such an in-depth knowledge
etc. I have just completed my course and have been
offered full-time employment in the industry.”
job with Steelman. The course gave me the skills
needed to work in this industry. I really like my
through SkillsTech Australia several years
ago and he recommended it to me. I found the
teachers to be very friendly and helpful and I have
enjoyed meeting other international students and
learning about their cultures. I have completed my
vocational placement and the employer has offered
Living in Brisbane
Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and the
third-largest city in Australia. Brisbane has a
subtropical climate, with warm, humid summers
and mild, clear winters.
Summer months are December to February with
typical temperatures between 21 and 30°C.
Winter months are June to August with typical
temperatures between 9 and 22°C.
Brisbane has a range of sport and recreation
opportunities including water sports (swimming,
boating, water skiing, fishing), football (rugby
union, rugby league, soccer, Australian rules),
netball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, tennis,
squash, cricket, martial arts, aerobics and many
more.
Brisbane city and the suburbs offer various
restaurants, places of worship, movie theatres,
performing arts, museums, art galleries and tourist
attractions.
All SkillsTech Australia training centres are close
to Brisbane city and less than an hour’s drive from
the world-famous Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast,
renowned for endless beaches and numerous
tourist attractions.
For further information about Brisbane, visit:
Living costs
Australia offers value for money. Living expenses
and tuition costs in Australia are lower than in
other English-speaking countries, and Brisbane
is generally more affordable than other cities in
Australia.
Ongoing expenses
Once students have established their
accommodation and extras, such as telephone
and electricity, they will need to budget for
ongoing costs. Usually, ongoing expenses will fall
into four categories, including:
• utilities (landline telephone, electricity and
gas – every three months)
• living (rent, food, transportation,
entertainment – weekly)
• education (photocopying, printing – as
required)
• unexpected (return home, family visits,
health costs not covered by Overseas
Student Health Cover (OSHC).
The cost of living in Brisbane varies greatly,
depending on personal needs and tastes. The
Department of Immigration and Citizenship
suggests students need a minimum of $1,500
per month, more may be required if students are
renting a house or apartment on their own.
Electricity
In Australia, electricity is 220–240 volts AC.
Electrical sockets require three-pin plugs. Most
large hotels feature universal outlets for 240V or
100V shavers, but for any other electrical device
students will need to use an adaptor. Adaptors
can be purchased from many department stores
and luggage shops.
Accommodation
Because SkillsTech Australia does not offer
Temporary accommodation
Staying in temporary accommodation on arrival
enables students to get to know the area and find
something to suit their budget.
Temporary accommodation includes:
• staying with family or friends
• backpacker accommodation
• boarding in a house/share accommodation
• homestay.
Homestay
Homestay accommodation offers students the
chance to live with an Australian family, either for
a few weeks or for the duration of their stay.
Students under 18 years of age, without a legally
appointed guardian to care for them in Australia,
must use homestay accommodation. Further
information can be found on page 37.
All homestay accommodation is inspected for
quality of service and amenities. It provides
students with an established home and a host
family who will take care of their basic needs
(meals, furniture, bedding and amenities bills).
Most homes are within walking distance of public
transport, but if not, the family will arrange for
students to be taken to transport.
Living with a family will give students a chance to
practise their English conversation skills.
Homestay families provide their guests with:
• their own room with a bed, desk and lamp
• at least two meals each working day
(Monday to Friday)
• three meals each day on weekends
(Saturday and Sunday)
• help with finding their way around the city
and interesting places to visit.
Care arrangement guidelines
Care arrangement guidelines
for international students
under the age of 18
All students under the age of 18 will receive a Care
Arrangements Application Form with their Letter of
Offer.
A parent or guardian must complete this form,
detailing the care arrangements for the student
when they are in Australia. The form must be
returned when the offer is accepted.
Students under the age of 18 must reside in
Australia, either:
• with a parent
• with a legal custodian
• with a person nominated by the parent or
legal custodian
• in homestay accommodation arranged
by one of SkillsTech Australia’s preferred
homestay providers.
Residing with a parent or legal custodian
On arrival at SkillsTech Australia, students must
submit a copy of their parent/legal custodian’s
Visa and documentation to prove their
relationship.
Residing with a nominated person
The nominated person is responsible for making
decisions concerning the student’s daily care and
control.
They must be a relative, at least 21 years of age,
of good character and have permission to reside
in Australia until the student turns 18 (or the
student’s Visa expires).
The relative must be the student’s:
• brother or sister
• aunt or uncle
• grandparent
• step-parent or step-grandparent
• niece or nephew
• step-brother or step-sister
• step-aunt or step-uncle
• step-niece or step-nephew.
Step-relationships are defined as a relationship
with someone who is related to a family by
marriage of their mother or father.
To show that a relative is of good character,
evidence of police clearance must be provided.
This police clearance of the relative must come
from the country or countries in which they have
resided for more than 12 months within the past
10 years (or after the age of 16 if the relative is
less than 26 years old).
Contact DIAC or the Australian Embassy in the
student’s home country for details on how to
obtain a police clearance, or visit www.immi.gov.
au/allforms/character-requirements
Students must attach the Nomination of a Student
Guardian Form (Form 157N) with their Student
Visa application. The form can be obtained from
the DIAC, the Australian Embassy, or www.immi.
gov.au/allforms/pdf/157n.pdf
Residing in homestay accommodation
A representative of SkillsTech Australia will give
a signed statement (Confirmation of Appropriate
Accommodation and Welfare Arrangements,
CAAWA) to DIAC certifying that appropriate
arrangements have been made for the student’s
accommodation, support and general welfare
during their stay in Australia until they turn 18.
After this statement has been signed, students
will be required to stay with the homestay family.
Students intending to change accommodation for
any reason, either before or after they arrive in
Australia, must first seek approval from SkillsTech
