It used to be my opening chat with my mom in New York, or my brother in Los Angeles would start with “how’s the weather?,” but now it’s, “what are you paying for gas”? With that said, the idea of how to vacation cheaply is compelling us to think outside the box. One new idea for a quick getaway heard frequently around town is something called a “staycation,” which translates into a short mini-vacation no more than two or three hours from home. Perhaps an idea for an August mini “staycation” is right in your own backyard, with a nice cool drink in hand, curled up with the newest hot summer read and the latest issue of the Parklander. Inside this issue, you’ll be treated to a wealth of diverse information, from practical parenting advice to guidance on planning your upcoming nuptials to interesting profiles on local politicians running for Broward County Sheriff. With preparations for back-to-school underway (is it that time already?!), I know my five year old is going to be a bit stressed out. Although she’s been in preschool, Kindergarten is a completely different animal. She’ll have to wake up hours earlier (hard, since like me, my girl’s not a morning person), don a stiff uniform and be expected to pay attention in class. Like many of you with school-age children, I’m not exactly sure how to prepare her for this milestone, but thankfully, this month’s issue features articles designed to advise and help take the edge off any harried parent. Check out our feature on Back to School fashion where we’ll show you how to dress your child oh, so fashionably with the help of our local advertisers, and an article from a noted family therapist on how to encourage your child to plan for a successful school year. Ever wonder where your teens are at night—you don’t have to worry anymore—read on to learn about the Coral Springs’ Teen Car Club, an after-school program designed to keep boredom in check and keep your kids out of trouble while providing them with an exciting, creative outlet. Love is in the air! Meet our six newest couples and hear all about how they met and planned their romantic proposals. As well, turn to page after page of cost saving advice from choosing the perfect banquet hall to selecting the right wedding bands to fun honeymoon fashions for the groom. Next month we’ll bring you the winners of the Biggest Loser’s Contest. Finally, after months of hard work, we’ll reward our contestants with fabulous prizes and feature their “after” photos in the magazine. We’re also excited to tell you of three new features we’re confident you’ll enjoy: a joy of photography feature, commencing with this issue; and, commencing in September, a decorating column offering sage advice from an internationally known interior designer and a unique crafter’s segment. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer. Best, Susan
