Infection occurs with<strong>in</strong> 30 days after the operation if no implant is left <strong>in</strong> place or with<strong>in</strong><br />

one year if implant is <strong>in</strong> place and the <strong>in</strong>fection appears to be related to the operation and<br />

<strong>in</strong>fection <strong>in</strong>volves any part of the anatomy (eg organs or spaces), other than the <strong>in</strong>cision,<br />

which was opened or manipulated dur<strong>in</strong>g an operation and at least one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

purulent discharge from a dra<strong>in</strong> that is placed through a stab wound <strong>in</strong>to the organ/<br />

space<br />

organisms isolated from an aseptically obta<strong>in</strong>ed culture of fluid or tissue <strong>in</strong> the organ/<br />

space<br />

an abscess or other evidence of <strong>in</strong>fection <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g the organ/space that is found<br />

on direct exam<strong>in</strong>ation, dur<strong>in</strong>g reoperation, or by histopathologic or radiological<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

diagnosis of an organ/space SSI by a surgeon or attend<strong>in</strong>g physician.<br />
