BAREFOOT<br />
If <strong>the</strong> day is warm, walk barefoot in <strong>the</strong> sand or on <strong>the</strong> warm rocks. Describe<br />
how it feels.<br />
TASTE TREATS<br />
If your beach site is free from polluting influences, taste <strong>the</strong> sea. Is it<br />
really salty? With someone along who knows local marine life, taste sea<br />
lettuce, raw sea urchin eggs, or edible land plants that grow at <strong>the</strong> edge of<br />
<strong>the</strong> sea. Describe how each tastes.<br />
BARNACLE FEED<br />
Find barnacles in a tidepool and watch <strong>the</strong>m eat. Can you stick your <strong>to</strong>ngue<br />
out and back as fast <strong>the</strong>v can?<br />
WORM SQUIGGLE<br />
Find a worm. What is it doing? Squiggle your body like <strong>the</strong> worm does!<br />
MUSCLE UP<br />
Find a blue mussel. Can you see <strong>the</strong> golden threads it makes so that it can<br />
hang on <strong>to</strong> rocks? Show your muscle. How do you hang on <strong>to</strong> rocks?<br />
CRAB WALK<br />
Practice a crab walk, using your hands and feet and facing upward.<br />
try making just your hands walk like a crab. Cross <strong>the</strong>m at <strong>the</strong> wrists and<br />
move your fingers as if you were walking forward, backward, and sideways.<br />
SHELL SOUNDS<br />
Find some snails and have a snail race. Now find a friend and have you<br />
own snail race. How fast can you crawl?<br />
CRAB MOLT<br />
Look for an empty crab shell. Did <strong>the</strong> crab die or did it merely shed its<br />
shell (molt) so that it could grow a bigger one? (If it shed its shell <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will be a slit-like opening where it backed out. Save some crab shell parts<br />
for later studies in your classroom.)<br />
