Making an Undersea World<br />

Background:<br />

Children invariably are fascinated<br />

by <strong>the</strong> undersea world. By decorating<br />

your classroom, students<br />

will have a chance <strong>to</strong> use <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

imaginations and artistic skills,<br />

while learning more about <strong>the</strong> sea<br />

and its inhabitants.<br />

Materials:<br />

masking tape<br />

plastic sponge<br />

coarse sandpaper<br />

crayons<br />

paper<br />

clo<strong>the</strong>s iron<br />

red finger paint<br />

black marker<br />

newsprint<br />

dried sea star<br />

sand<br />

glue<br />

construction paper<br />

scissors<br />

yarn or string<br />

paper bags<br />

paintbrush<br />

powdered tempera paint<br />

Procedure:<br />

1. Invite a diver or marine<br />

biologist <strong>to</strong> demonstrate his or<br />

her equipment and show<br />

underwater slides.<br />

2. Ask <strong>the</strong> students about <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own ocean adventures. Have<br />

<strong>the</strong>m make construction paper<br />

cu<strong>to</strong>uts of <strong>the</strong> animals and<br />

label with names based on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own : Susannah <strong>Sea</strong><br />

Squirt, Joe Jellyfish, Annie<br />

Anemone, Kathy Clam.<br />

Attach yarn or string, and<br />

hang <strong>the</strong> cu<strong>to</strong>uts decoratively<br />

. The nicknames can be<br />

used later on field trip name<br />

tags.<br />

3. Select a variety of art activities<br />

that will turn your<br />

classroom and hallways in<strong>to</strong><br />

an undersea world : hang<br />

colored tissue paper beneath<br />

fluorescent lights <strong>to</strong> act as a<br />

filter; hang art projects and<br />

seaweed streamers from <strong>the</strong><br />

ceiling; make murals; ask<br />

students <strong>to</strong> bring sea treasures<br />

from home such as<br />

nets, floats, shells and<br />

driftwood. Additionally, you<br />

can :<br />

a. Make paper waves from<br />

construction paper and<br />

tape <strong>to</strong> window shades.<br />

Tape sea birds, boats<br />

and planes above <strong>the</strong><br />

waves, and sea animals<br />

below <strong>the</strong>m. When <strong>the</strong><br />

shades are drawn, it’s<br />

low tide ! (Suggested by<br />
