Congratulations to the Madison County High School Boys Basketball Team, Head Coach:

Basketball Championship! The team finished the season with a 28 to 5 record.
EL FAMILY NIGHT
The EL Department hosted an EL Family Night Thursday, March 14 th for the students and
families in the program at the Career Technical Center. The event promoted family
involvement. Members from the Sparkman High School Robotics Team (who are ELs)
demonstrated one of the robots they created. This was a great chance for younger EL
students to see role models who are active and successful in school. There was great
turnout and everyone had a wonderful time. Thanks for your support of the EL students
and families!
SPARKMAN HIGH STUDENT’S ART
WORK HANGS IN WASHINGTON
Congratulations to Dakota Olinger! Dakota’s photograph, "Crimson Beauty",
was one of only six pieces of artwork that received Honorable Mention in the
Congressional Art Competition held at the Huntsville Museum of Art.
Dakota’s work will be displayed in Congressman Mo Brooks’ office in
Washington, DC for the remainder of this year. Dakota is a student at
Sparkman High School in Mr. Eric Mittman’s photography class.

Congratulations to Dee Gordon, Guidance Counselor at Buckhorn High School, for
winning a $2,500 grant from State Farm Insurance. This year, State Farm® introduced
Celebrate My Drive® as an opportunity for communities to rally around teens as they
learn to drive. The money will be used to promote teen driver safety.
Congratulations to Mikaela Brock, Erin Harris, Hannah Harris, and Kayla Moyers! All
four band members auditioned for and qualified for the District 1 Honor Band. Kayla
Moyers and Melody Knight also qualified for All-State band for the second year in a
row.

Congratulations to the Buckhorn Choir for a great performance at State Assessment on Friday, March 1 st .
The choir earned straight superior scores, including a perfect score in sight-reading and one perfect score
in performance. Way to go Buckhorn Choir!
Congratulations to Hannah Hallmark (pictured at right), student at Buckhorn
High School, for receiving the 2013 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA).
Hannah attended the leadership training program sponsored by the Rotary
Clubs of Huntsville and received an award for her accomplishment.
Congratulations to Cameron England who ended his wrestling season with 38
wins and placed 6th at the 6A State Wrestling Tournament on February 16 th at
the VBC.
Congratulations to Austin Vu and Adonis Chambers for their great
achievements at the Special Olympics Swim Meet on Friday, February 15 th .
Austin placed 1 st in the 100m freestyle and 1 st in the 100m backstroke. Adonis
placed 1 st in the 15m walk, 1 st in the 25m freestyle and 1 st in the 4 x 25 relay!
Great job guys!
Congratulations to BHS senior, Tiffany-Amber Stage for being selected to spend the day at Chase Animal
Hospital and shadow Dr. Able’s day-to-day activities, including a surgery. Her experience was made
possible by “We are the Future” - a partnership between WAAY-31, Huntsville City Schools, Madison
City Schools and Madison County Schools.
Congratulations to Meghan Durboraw for winning the Carrington Dental Care Centre Essay Scholarship.

Congratulations to the Buckhorn High School Scholars' Bowl team. They finished the Madison County
Season as County champions for the seventh year in a row. Their record against other county schools was
17-1. Walker Ericsson, Tessa Hawkins, and Rachel Wall made the All-County Team. Walker was the
County MVP for the second year in a row.
Congratulations to the Lady Bucks Varsity and JV Softball Teams - Champions of the Lady Wildcats, Sax
High School Tournament. Varsity winning pitchers - Caitlyn Hayden had two wins and one save; Brenee’
Cox had two wins. Leading Hitters – Katelyn Nowakowski had six hits and one homerun. Brooke Miller
had four hits; Jennifer Kern and Alyssa Daugherty each had three hits and one home run! GO LADY
BUCKS!!

Rusty Hughes’ 8th grade History classes completed Seven
Wonders/Trojan Horse history projects. Students made 3D models,
blue prints of their diagram, wrote an essay, and designed a photo
journal to document their journey. Students again this year out did
themselves by making very realistic models.
The BMS Band was proud to have the following
students participate in the Eighth Annual Madison
County Honor Band on January 10-11, 2013: Tyler
Behrens, Bethany Brock, Mary Beth Burns, Kaylee
Combs, Miranda Cox, Melayna Cumming, Matthew
Dean, Ben Doty, Sarah Geist, Hannah Gray, Jacob
Greer, Daniel Griffin, Amelia Harrison, Katie
Jaramillo, Gabe Keeter, Christopher Mendoza, Isaiah
Pullum, Michael Reed, Danielle Stewart, Connor
Swinea, Bree Tatum and Ciera Wilken. In addition,
Bethany Brock, Matthew Dean and Amelia Harrison
were chosen as 1 st chair on their respective
instruments. Congratulations to all who participated!

Buckhorn Basketball was well represented in the County Tournament Finals. The 7 th and 8th grade boys
were runner ups.
The Buckhorn Middle School Faculty/Staff Buckette Runners had two relay teams to participate in the
Mercedes Benz Marathon in February. Both teams completed the 26.2 mile run in under 4:27:59. Team
members included Debi Mullins, Britney Gransky, Mindy Pierce, Jackie Hester, Barbara Hughes, Rachel
Evans, Liz Warren, Jennifer Taylor, and Amanda Lemons.
Congratulations to the BMS Choir for receiving an overall rating of Excellence at the Alabama State
Choral Competition.
Congratulations to the BMS softball team for taking first place in the Birmingham tournament this past
weekend. Their record is now 5-1. Special recognition to Zoe Emrick and Kalana Packard for being
named to the All Tournament Team and Kaylee Combs for being named tournament MVP.
Mrs. Pierce’s 8 th grade World History students hosted a “Night at the Museum” on February 28, 2013.
Parents, friends, and family were invited to take a tour through the hallways of BMS as historical
characters came to life. Parents listened intently as King Tut, Moses, Aristotle, Caesar, and many, many
more told how they made an important impact on history. An anticipated 125 parents were expected, but
after final numbers were counted, over 200 parents, friends, and community members came through the
tour! It was a fun night of learning for all involved.

Three Central School band students were recently selected
to represent Central in the Madison County Middle School
Honor Band: Karen Carter, 8 th grade, Dale Millard, 8 th
grade, and Hope Miller, 8 th grade.
Congratulations to these students and Ms. Merritt, Band
Director.
Mrs. VanHooser’s 5 th grade ACE students at Central
School traveled to Dauphin Island Sea Lab off the coast of

Mobile to study marine biology. While the students were at the sea lab, they toured Fort Gaines,
chartered a boat to collect sea animals, identified marine vertebrae’s and invertebrate’s, dissected squid,
and walked in a salt marsh to investigate the nursery grounds for young sea life.
Mrs. VanHooser’s 3 rd grade ACE students at Central
have been studying Medieval Europe society and
government. As a culminating event, they participated
in a Medieval Feast. The students learned and
participated in the different steps of a feast from
bringing in the salt bearer to cutting the upper crust. At
the end of the feast, the students represented different
kingdoms and competed in a chess competition and a
catapult-building competition.
Karen Carter, Central School 8 th grader, was selected to be a page for State Representative Wayne
Johnson at the 2013 session of the Alabama Legislature. She will serve as page for three days.
Tina Putman, 1 st grade teacher, performed at Music in the Valley on Saturday, March 16 th at Princeton
High School in Paint Rock Valley. This is a huge fundraiser for the Volunteer Fire Department in Paint
Rock Valley. Local acts come together to re-enact various artists of this decade and previous decades.
Mrs. Putman was featured on Channel 19 for her contributions to this community event.
National Elementary Honor Society sold candy grams during the week of Valentine's Day. The group
raised $175 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation! They also collected pull tabs for the second year to
support the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, TN. The entire school collected around 61 milk jugs
full of pull tabs!

HISTORICAL CELEBRATION
In February, fourth grade students celebrated African
American History month by creating a museum depicting
the contributions made by various famous African
Americans. Mrs. Geraldine Tibbs was the guest speaker for
this exciting historical celebration. Parents, students, and
the EES school community shared in this delightful
depiction of the past.
Second Grade Celebrates
EES second graders had a Read Across America/Coast to Coast "Read-A-Thon" day, Friday, March 1 st .
Students wore their PJ's as they enjoyed reading and taking AR tests all day. Students that made between
an 80-100 were given special prizes for their participation.
The Endeavor Elementary Spelling Bee

Fourth and fifth grade students participated in a
Science Fair in conjunction with the Book Fair.
Their projects were on display following the
February PTO meeting.
Our St. Jude’s Mathathon kicked off on February
22 with Be Smart and Sock It to Cancer! Students
who wore crazy socks donated $1.00. The total
raised for the kick off was $300.00.
Select students from third, fourth, and fifth grades
participated in the HES Spelling Bee. Rebecca
Sanchez from Mrs. Epp’s classroom was the
winner. The runner up was Louis Anderson from
Mrs. Vandiver’s classroom. They attended the county Spelling Bee.
Vanessa Barnett was chosen as the HES Teacher of the Year. Ana Meininger was chosen as the HES
Support Personnel of the Year. Ana was also chosen as Madison County Support Personnel of the Year
for Elementary Schools.
The Book Fair held a One for Books competition; students
raised $604.99 for teachers to purchase books from the
Book Fair. Scholastic matched this dollar amount and
donated it to Kids in Distressed Situations, Marines Toys
for Tots, and Kids in Need Foundation.

HAZEL GREEN ELEMENTARY
HGES ACE Dauphin Island Field Trip
Hazel Green Elementary’s Fifth Grade ACE class took a
trip to Dauphin Island Sea Lab February 15 - 18. Students
participated in many activities and learned about
ecosystems and sea life.
HGES Art Students Participate in Museum Art Show
First grader Ella Jensen (Mrs. Franklin’s class) and Fifth
grader Rebecca Cole (Mrs. O’Dell’s class) will represent
Hazel Green Elementary at Huntsville Museum of Art’s
Student Art Show. Their artwork will be on display
March 10 through April 14.

Family Reading Night at HGES
On February 26 th , HGES students, parents and community leaders gathered under the Big Top to celebrate
Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a circus themed Family Reading Night. Families enjoyed dinner, guest speakers
and a Book Fair.

HAZEL GREEN HIGH SCHOOL

On Friday, January 11 th , 137 students were treated to pizza and drinks for their perfect attendance during
the second grading period.
Senior Cole Peyton received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy
based on his academic and athletic skills, maturity, and citizenship traits.
Congratulations to Mary Grace Paladino, Kristal Roberts, and Jovanna Rodriguez
and their teacher Tanya Andrews. They were selected to participate in the GEMS-U Expo in
Birmingham which is an educational experience designed to actively involve girls in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math.
Congratulations to the JV Scholars’ Bowl Team and Coach Eric Hunter for
remaining undefeated all season and becoming the Madison County
Champions. The winning team consisted of Katie Hyatt, Chase Hampton,
Thomas Paladino, Kelvin McCormick, Annie Richardson, Kourtney
Atwell, Travis Harbin, Ashlyn Putman, and Wendall Seals. Varsity
members Anna Hyatt and John Andrews made the All-County Team.
Congratulations to the HGHS Symphonic Band for earning all superior
ratings at this year’s Alabama State Music Performance Assessment. Also,
congratulations to River Skrenes, Katie Hyatt, Cody Morrison, Chase Hampton, and Matthew
Donovan for making the Alabama All-State Band. Dana Beck, Kourtney Atwell, Alicia Daniels, Katie
Hyatt, Alexandra Gentile, Tracie Goode, Annie Richardson and Alexander Delcore had the honor of
performing with various university honor bands.
Congratulations to Amelia Willett for being selected as Huntsville Hospital’s Athlete of the Week.
Amelia maintained a 3.58 GPA while participating in Dance, Track, Cross Country, Cheerleading, and
Golf.
Once again, the Varsity Cheerleaders had the opportunity to compete at Nationals.
Parker Cothren was named to the AL Sports Writers Association 2012 All-State Football Team, and
Austin Dempsey had Honorable Mention out of more than 1,100 nominations.
Congratulations to the Boys’ Basketball Team for making it to the Regional Championship game for the
second consecutive year. Austin Dempsey, Lewis Sullivan, and Cash Crutcher were named All Area

while Sullivan and Parker Cothren made the All Regional Team. Lady Trojans Taylor Edwards and
Emilee Forrester were All Area.
The Hazel Green Dramatis Personae received a Technical Assistance Grant from the Alabama State
Council on the Arts to help pay for a guest designer for their Shakespeare production. Senior member
Madison Keller was featured on a WAAY 31 “We Are the Future” segment. Mr. Clint Merritt was
awarded a Theatre Director’s scholarship towards the International Thespian Festival which will take
place in Lincoln, NE in June.

Legacy Elementary Teacher of the Year Named Madison
County Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Caroline Wilson for winning this prestigious
recognition among her peers across the county. Mrs. Wilson also
received the Crystal Apple Award from WAY FM 88.1. She was
nominated by one of her students, Sarah Taylor, for this month’s
WAY FM award. Her warmth and care for her 4 th grade students
is as obvious as her dynamic teaching in the classroom. Mrs.
Wilson also sponsors Monkey Mail at Legacy. Monkey Mail
promotes letter writing across grade levels. Club members learn
how our postal system works as they serve in various jobs to keep
the mail delivery running smoothly.
Legacy Support Person of the Year Named Alternate Support
Person of the Year for Madison County
Congratulations to Jutta Terry, the director of Legacy’s Cub Café.
Under her direction, students gain thoughtful insight into healthy
eating. Students look forward to Mrs. Terry’s visits on LION News as she introduces them to new fruits
and vegetables. Mrs. Terry always has a smile for students and a helping hand for teachers.

Archers at the Ready
Legacy Elementary hosted its 2 nd Annual Archery
Tournament in February. This two-day event was
for elementary, middle, and high school students.
In the elementary division, Legacy Elementary’s
Maxwell Foster finished third.
Youth Art Month at Huntsville Museum of Art
Fifth graders Kristina Fernandez and Andrew
Thompson will have their artwork on display from
March 10 to April 14. Congratulations to these
talented young artists.
Legacy SGA Sponsors Charity Fundraisers in
February
Legacy SGA sponsored a charity fundraiser
challenge from January 22 nd to February 13 th . Selling hearts for a dollar, SGA officers and
representatives collected money each morning then posted a heart with the donor's name on it on that
grade level’s wall. The grade level who raised the most money won a pizza party. Kindergarten and
Specials combined to donate $29 to Ronald McDonald House. First Graders donated $304.09 to Lurie
Children’s Hospital of Chicago. St. Jude’s Hospital received $149 from Second Graders. Third Graders
raised $275.85 for the MS Society. The Ark received $213 from Fourth Grade and the American Cancer
Society received $209.05 from Fifth Grade.
LYNN FANNING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Lynn Fanning Elementary celebrated “I Love Books” week
the week of February 11 th . The week was highlighted with
visits by guest readers including author Heather Cowan and
the Hazel Green HS Ambassadors, daily book prizes, and
special events in the library. On Thursday, a school-wide
game of Book Bingo ended the day and the week culminated
with a book/character parade on Friday in which K-2 students
dressed as their favorite characters and traversed the halls.

Lynn Fanning celebrated the 100 th day of school in fine
fashion as the students dressed as 100 year-olds. Keeping
with the 100 theme, teachers taught special lessons on the
number 100. Class projects decorated the halls with posters
based on the number 100, special 100 piece snacks were
consumed, and writing activities with the 100 theme filled the
day.
The February 21 st PTA meeting provided an opportunity for
parents and students to determine “Are You Smarter Than a
5 th Grader”. Unfortunately for parents, the answer was a
resolute “No” as the 5 th grade students swept three out of four
rounds. Hosted by 5 th grade math teacher, Josh Lindsey, kids and parents answered questions about
academic subjects and pop culture. A great time was had by all in attendance.
Mrs. Salge’s art students Grace Worthington, 5 th grade and Carlos Valverde, 2 nd grade were selected to
have their artwork displayed in the Youth Art Month exhibition at the Huntsville Museum of Art until
April 21 st . A reception will be held on March 10 th for the students and their families to celebrate their
creativity and talent.
Lynn Fanning’s National Honor Society’s Heifer International service learning project raised $887 for
Heifer International and bought a llama, goat, chickens, ducks, honeybees, and gardener baskets for
impoverished people living in underdeveloped countries.

CNC LATHE PROGRAMMING CONTEST
Kane Reimers, from Precision Machining, placed 3 rd in
the CNC Lathe Programming contest at the 3 rd Annual
Calhoun Skills Competition.
SKILLS USA COMPETITION FOR AUTO MECHANICS
On February 13 th , Wallace State hosted the District
Skills USA competition. Eliyah Bellamy and Bradley
Ledbetter competed in the District Skills competition
and Adrian Cothern observed.

MADISON COUNTY CAREER ACADEMY SAFE TRACTOR
DRIVING CAREER DEVELOPMENT EVENT
This contest was held at Madison County Career
Technical Center on October 16 th . Students from Madison
County, Hazel Green and New Hope High Schools,
participated in the event which included a safety check of
all equipment and driving the tractor through a course.
Twenty five contestants from the three schools competed.
Tyler Hillard of Madison County Career Technical Center
was the 1 st place winner, Dallas Honea of Hazel Green
was the 2 nd place winner and Austin Truitt of Madison
County Career Technical Center was the 3 rd place winner.

VALENTINES PROJECT
Mrs. Caruso's TEACH AL students went to work with the Second Mile Preschool students for a
community service project. They did two art projects and read books to the children.

Alabama Regional Future City Competition
A team of MCES eighth grade students competed in the
Alabama Regional Future City Competition at UAH and
placed in the top five. The team received a special award for
best nightscape in a future city from the Von Braun
Astronomical Society. Team members were Samantha
Thompson, Taylor Thrower, Kade Rogers, Seth Rose, Jared
Sandner, Cannon Sloan, Cooper Flynn, and Laurel
Holloway. Engineers from Boeing provided technical
support.

Celebrating African American Heritage through Literacy
and Leadership Program
On February 28, 2013 guest speakers visited each classroom
as part of the African American Heritage through Literacy
and Leadership Program. Activities included poetry, reader’s
theater, short stories, and/or drama readings. MCES PTA
purchased and donated Coretta Scott King Book Award books
to the library in honor of the guest speakers. Each book was
signed by a guest speaker. The speakers were Mrs. Sharon
Cissell, Ms. Dawn Julian, Mrs. Tiffany Roach, Mrs. Louise
Petty, Mrs. Marie Flynn, Mrs. Bazola Holloway, Mrs.
Lorraine Boone, Mrs. Vickie Everett, Mrs. Marty Stone, Ms.
Dianne Bryant, Mr. Roosevelt Pitts, Mr. Horace Wilson, and

Leader in Me
This year, MCES has chosen to incorporate Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s 7 Habits of Effective Leadership
“The Leader in Me” into the curriculum. Mr. Carter Biles was recognized at the MCES Celebrating
African American Heritage through Literacy and Leadership Program for his effective leadership skills in
preparing Prezi presentations for classroom teachers and co-teaching with Mrs. Berry during the seventh
and eighth grade library classes.
Severe Weather Preparedness Week
Spencer Denton, Meteorologist from WAAY 31 weather, posted on his face book page that he “had a
great time out at Madison County Elementary School in Gurley talking to the first graders about weather.”
Mr. Denton was at MCES on February 27, 2013.
Target Field Trip Grant
Congratulations to Mrs. Lenoir and Mrs. Weaver! Their first grade classes enjoyed a trip to Seussical the
Musical and Ci-Ci’s pizza. A special thank you to Target!

The MCHS Boys Basketball Team won the Alabama State 4A Championship! Monterio Birchfield and
Tyrell Clary were named to the State All-Tournament Team and Seab Webster was named tournament
MVP. Head coach is Bubba Webster. Assistant Coaches are Preston Boyd, Blake East and Chasen Uptain.
Trainer is Sean Venckus. The team finished their season with a record of 28 and 5.

The MCHS Girls Basketball Team won the Regional championship and advanced to the Final Four,
where they were defeated in the semi-finals. Courtney Binder and Hannah Nichols were named to the
Regional Tournament team. Hannah Nichols was the Regional Tournament MVP and was also named to
the State All-Tournament team.
Fifty MCHS English students took a trip to Central Elementary School where they had the honor of
reading to students in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
Hannah Weaver was the 2 nd place winner at Post level (Post 5162) in the VFW Voice of Democracy
program.
Two Madison County indoor track athletes won the Class 4A State
title in their events. Robin Yawn is the state champion in shot-put and
Russell Pugh is the state champion in pole vault.
Four players from the MCHS State Championship Volleyball team
were named to the Alabama Volleyball Coaches Association All
State Teams. Hannah Nichols and Syretha Pride were named first
team. Riley Carter and Abbie Mills were named second team.
Jordan Chunn recently signed a football scholarship with Troy
University. Jordan also received the great honor of being named 4A
Back of the Year at a recent award ceremony.
LaQuante Bone signed a football scholarship with UT Martin.
Emily Gangl and Will Hurst were selected as Alabama Sports
Festival Foundation Ambassadors. As ASF Foundation
Ambassadors, they are promoting the "Be a Mentor, Don't Text &
Drive" campaign.
Seab Webster was nominated to the McDonald's All American High
School Basketball Team.
Jackson Richard was named the MCHS Bryant Jordan Scholar Athlete.
Syretha Pride was named MCHS Bryant Jordan Achievement Award recipient, and went on to win the
Area and Region in the 2013 Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Scholarship Program.
Forty-five students from Madison County High School’s Junior ROTC visited Test Area 1 on Feb. 14 to
witness the live firing of a Javelin Missile as well as observe a static display of an Improved Target
Acquisition System.

Monrovia Elementary School was selected as a School Tour site
for The Leader in Me Symposium. Approximately 160 conference
participants visited the school on February 7, 2013 and give
students, staff, and parents of Monrovia Elementary an
opportunity to showcase results they have achieved through The
Leader in Me model. This is the school’s first year of
implementation of the seven habits.

program benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. MES students exceeded their goal and

The MMS dance team competed in 2 state-level
competitions during January. At one of them, the
team placed 2 nd with their Hip Hop routine and
1 st with their Pom routine. At the other, they
finished 1 st in Hip Hop (out of 8 teams) and 4 th in
Pom (scoring 3.25 points away from 1 st ). The
dancers shown in the picture are 7 th and 8th

Congratulations to the Monrovia Middle School Scholars' Bowl
team for their 1 st place win at the Deep South Challenge held at
the LAMP School in Montgomery February 16 th . The Deep
South Challenge is a regional competition for 6 th -9 th grade
students from schools in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama,
Louisiana, and Georgia. Monrovia Middle is now the two-time
back-to-back champions of this 5 state tournament. In addition,
it has made our school a national qualifier for the National
Academic Challenge held in New Orleans, Chicago, or
Washington, DC. at the end of the school year. Once again,
congratulations to the Scholars' Bowl team members on their
astounding accomplishment at LAMP.
The Monrovia Middle School Scholars' Bowl team also won 1 st
place win at Lamp High School at the Lamp Middle School
Invitational in Montgomery on January 5 th . This competition
was a 6 th -9 th grade competition that qualified the team as a
National Qualifier for the National Academic Challenge. This is
the first time that Monrovia has won this particular tournament
and it is an exceptional achievement for the team. The team
placed second at the ASCA District Competition held at Challenger Middle School on January 23rd. This
qualified our Scholars' Bowl team as a State Finalist team.

Mt. Carmel Elementary

Project Play! The 2012-2013 PTA focus for Mt.
Carmel Elementary has been a collaborative
effort across the community. Project Play, the
rejuvenation and improvement of Mt. Carmel’s
school playground, has been a unifying goal for
administrators, teachers, PTA, and Madison
County Schools. As a K-3 school, the
playground, originally built for a K-6 school, was
worn, out of date, and unusable by 48% of the
kindergarten students. Planning for Project Play
began in September and great strides have been
made toward improving the playground. As the
school year progresses and incremental goals of
the two year plan are achieved, the PTA and faculty look forward to warmer weather and enjoying the
fruits of laborious love and collaboration. On February 9 th , the PTA sponsored the Wildcat Festival, an
indoor event with fun, food, crafts, and enormous inflatables. Proceeds from the festival will help fund
Project Play and PTA funded academic initiatives. Mt. Carmel Elementary proudly features their PTA
board and parent volunteers in this quarter’s Shout Out: (L-R) Christine Hall, Parent Volunteer; Lydia
Drennan, Secretary; Jennifer Jennings, Treasurer; Lynn Dozier, Co-Vice President; Lynn Quann,

Arts In School: Third grade students, Karigan Willis and Kaitlyn Phoumavong, were selected to
represent Mt. Carmel Elementary in the student art exhibition at The Huntsville Museum of Art during
Youth Art Month (March 10-April 21). A reception was held on Sunday, March 10 th at the museum to
recognize these students.
Mt. Carmel Elementary student artwork was also displayed at the Huntsville Museum of Art Student Art
Gallery in November 2012. Artwork created in Mrs. Salge’s classroom from Madelyn Carroll, Ivory
Whitaker, Kaitlyn Phoumavong, Baila Bunnell, Nekari Lockett-Garner, Ethan Rushbrook, Randall
Madden, Julian Castillo, Andrew Hall and Daniel Jenkins was featured.
Carrie Edwards, our award winning kindergarten author, was interviewed by Senator Bill Holtzclaw about
her participation in the Fantasy Playhouse sponsored writing contest. Carrie and the other contest winners
were featured on the WAAY 31 evening news break out segment.

NHES ACE Field Trip
Fifth grade ACE students experienced a field trip to Dauphin Island February 1-4. They explored the
beaches and maritime forest and learned about beach zones, coastal ecology, and the watershed effect.
They even took a hands-on approach to keeping our beaches clean by collecting trash and discussing ways
that we affect the ocean even though we live a long distance from the ocean. Students also dissected a
squid and were able to touch marine animal specimens. The most exciting part of the trip for the students
was the salt marsh. They drove a short distance to an estuary to drag seines, catch, and identify animals
that live in the salt marsh.

Austin Byram, a 6 th grade student at NHES, placed 1 st in the Legacy Elementary School Archery
tournament and 2 nd place in the NHES and Buckhorn tournaments. Casey Selvage, an 8 th grade student at
NHES, placed 2 nd in the Buckhorn School tournament as well as the MC Tech Center tournament.

The New Market 5th Grade ACE Class, along with their teacher, Cheryl Jenkins, went on a field trip
to Dauphin Island, February 15 th -18 th . They studied about the wetlands, dissected squid, visited and
got stuck in the salt marsh, had plankton races, collected specimens from the bay (including a cone
head jelly fish), and learned of the different layers of a beach!
Two New Market students were chosen to have their work displayed this month at the Huntsville
Museum of Art in honor of Youth Art Month: Jaylen Hill (3 rd Grade) and Jenna McManes (2 nd
Grade).
New Market students and staff celebrated Read Across America Week with many fun reading related
activities. We created vocabulary hats, dressed up like our dads, wore pajamas to school and
participated in the AR “Read the Most From Coast to Coast” Challenge, and enjoyed many guest
readers. Buckhorn High School’s Leadership Club, Spanish Club, and football players read to many of
the classes.
The New Market School Archery Team has been having a very successful season so far. Last week,
they were named Regional Champions and that automatically qualifies them for the State Tournament
to be held on April 4 th . Individual winners were: Girl Winners: 1 Lauren Foster, 2 Abby Gipson, and
3 Breanna Mason. Boy Winners were: 1 Jake Parr and 2 Hayden O'Barr.

OWENS CROSS ROADS

Students in third and fourth grade read a story about Roger
Woodward. In July, 1960 at age 7 years old, Mr. Woodward
was swept over Niagara Falls after the boat he and his sister
were in capsized. His sister was rescued before going over
the falls, but Mr. Woodward fell 164 feet and lived to tell the
tale. The account was featured in Life Magazine,
documentaries, nonfiction books, and is even a question in
Trivial Pursuit! After reading the story, a teacher made
contact with Mr. Woodward and he graciously came to the
school and gave a first-hand account of his ordeal and the
water safety lessons he feels everyone needs to know.
The Owens Cross Roads School PTO purchased t-shirts for
the 6 th grade students. The back of the shirts reads “I will graduate” and the front of it reads “Class of
2019”. PTO wanted to find a way for every student to hear the words, “You will graduate”. We also
want to encourage every student to do their best and realize the importance of a good education. We want
them to be proud of themselves when they make it to Graduation Day, knowing all their hard work and
dedication has paid off. Thank you PTO for your support.
The Owens Cross Roads GEMS Team was selected to participate in the
GEMS Expo in Birmingham in February. Kelijah Alexander, Keniyah
Alexander, Savannah Bolden, Savannah Holder, MaHaley Mann, and
Elizabeth Mann created their project from aligned science objectives. Their
Habitat Chat project outcome was five podcasts that were align with first and
fifth grade course of study objectives. Their student-created podcast about
habitats was accepted to the ALEX Gallery 360 for teacher and students
around the world to use in lessons and units of study.
OCR would like to thank the African Drummers for coming out and putting
on a great performance for our school. They provided drum
music and dance and even the students and staff got to participate! A great
time of culture and learning was had by all.

Patti Citrano Honored as RES Support Staff
Employee of the Year
Mrs. Patti Citrano was recognized at the Madison
County Schools annual awards ceremony as the
Riverton Elementary Support Staff Employee of the
Year. She began her career in the Madison County
School System at Madison County Elementary. She
worked there for 3 years as a pre-k classroom aide.
She transferred to Mt. Carmel Elementary where she
served in the same position for 3 years. Mrs. Citrano
has worked at Riverton Elementary for 8 years and
currently serves as the physical education aide and
after school office aide. The students affectionately
call her “Ms. Patti.” Mrs. Citrano is an invaluable
member of the Riverton family. With a smile on her
face and kindness in her voice, she always assists
students, staff and parents in a very professional and courteous manner.
Merry Gaylor Honored as
Madison County Schools
Elementary Teacher of the Year Alternate
Mrs. Merry Gaylor was honored at the Madison County
Schools annual awards ceremony as the Elementary
Teacher of the Year Alternate. She grew up in
Franklin, Tennessee, and attended MTSU, earning her
B.S. degree in Elementary Education and her Masters in
Reading. She has taught preschool-5 th grade over the
past 31 years in Tennessee, Georgia, and now
Huntsville. In her first year at RES, she taught 5 th
grade; she has taught 1 st grade for the past 4 years. In
her spare time, Mrs. Gaylor enjoys traveling, reading,
hiking, camping and watching SEC football. Everyday
Mrs. Gaylor proves to be an outstanding example for
her students. She is always compassionate,
professional and willing to go the extra mile to help everyone at Riverton Elementary succeed.

Honor Society Induction
There were 42 new members inducted into the National Honor Society, led by club sponsor, Mrs. Lisa
Rogers. “You are on the right road”, was one of the encouraging statements made by school principal,
Mr. Hill. Officers gave speeches about what it means to be a member in the honor society. Students and
parents enjoyed a reception after the ceremony.
Youth Art Month

Balazsy was selected for display at the Huntsville Museum of
Art Children’s Gallery for a five week exhibition which will

Black History Month
Mrs. Branner’s social studies class had fun learning about famous African
Americans by combining artwork along with bibliographic information on
their projects that were displayed on the 6 th grade hallway.
Vocabulary Parade
Teachers and students enjoyed a morning of costume dress-up, and parading
down the hallways during the recent vocabulary parade. This is by far the
most fun and lively way to learn new vocabulary words, according to the
students.
Leader in Me Symposium
Over 200 educators from around the country toured, asked questions, took pictures, and heard from
students about the first year of being a Leader In Me school. Countless praises and compliments were
given.

The boys’ varsity basketball team defeated the number one
team in the state, Carver-Montgomery to compete in the 6A
State Boys Championship game. The team placed first-runner
up. The girls and boys won the Area Tournament.
The Arts: Theatre scored 20 superior ratings out of 22
individual events at Trumbauer Competition and was given an
overall superior rating. Eric Busby and Ryan Reid were
selected for ALL STAR CAST and Busby placed in
Contemporary solo male acting dramatic. The Chamber Choir
for received all superior ratings at State Choral Performance
Assessment. The Indoor Drumline won 1st place at the
Prattville High School Indoor Drumline contest.

GOLD LEVEL ACHIEVEMENT - 2012-2013
Sparkman Middle School’s Math Team reached Gold Level Status
in the MATHCOUNTS Club Program. After the students’ Ultimate
Math Challenges (UMC) were scored, at least 12 of the team
members scored an 80% or better on the UMC. Way to go SMS –
what a commendable accomplishment!

SMS Scholar’s Bowl Team placed 3 rd in their pool at the State competition. They had a record of 22-2
wins to losses. Eighth grader Jacob Bowling placed 5 th individually earning him a spot on the State All-
Tournament Team and won MVP for Madison County.
SMS band students went above and beyond to try out for all-state and all-district band! Two students were
selected for all state band: Dancy Castle on Contra Clarinet and Glenda Booker on Bb Clarinet. Seven
students made the all-district honor band: Dancy Castle on the Contra Clarinet; Chelsea Owens and Randi
Swanson on flute; Glenda Booker and Tori Phillips on Bb clarinet; Grace Gordon on alto sax; and Steven
Allen on percussion. What a huge honor for these band students!
In addition, the SMS Advanced Band received a superior rating at the Music Performance Assessment for
the 3 rd year in a row!
Sandy Brand, Media Specialist, was a guest blogger for Edmodo. She blogged about SMS’ international
book club, in which participating students are connecting with students in Renaison, France.
SMS hosted the 3 rd annual Battle of the Books competition
March 7 th against Liberty Middle School. Battle of the
Books is a question-answer competition similar to Scholars’
Bowl. BOB gives students the opportunity to read and
discuss quality literature with peers, thereby formulating
discussion techniques. Each BOB member is required to
read and submit questions on 5 specified novels.
SMS held its annual School-Wide Spelling Bee on January
16, 2013. The winner was Katelyn Cole, 7 th grade, and the
runner-up was Rachel Dowling, 8 th grade. Katelyn placed in
the Top 15 at the county spelling bee held at Randolph
School.

This week, we started wrapping up Chapter 8 in the Algebra 1B
class. Students have been multiplying binomials and factoring
trinomials. In small group time, students started with a poster and
had to write two binomials to multiply. The posters were then
handed to the next group who had to multiply the binomials to
create a trinomial. The following day, Mrs. Deiss wrote the
trinomials on new posters, and handed them to a different group.

They had to factor those trinomials using any of the three methods they learned in class. It is great when
small groups work together. Mrs. Deiss loves the discussions they have when solving problems and loves
watching how they debate over the best method to use. Students feel invested when they are the ones who
get to create the problems to be solved. They are much more receptive to the lesson instead of just
working from the book. One example created is:
Group #1 Created: (2x + 3)(3x + 4)
Group # 2 Multiplied to get: 6x 2 + 17x + 12
Group #3 Factored, using the table method of grouping, to get: (2x + 3)(3x + 4)
It’s a Cell-A- Bration! On February 8, 2013, the
students in Ms. McDonald’s Biology class
wrapped up their weeks of learning about the cell
theory and cell parts with a video viewing and
organelle tasting celebration. Each class divided
into groups to create a visual presentation about
the cell theory and the parts of the organelle.
Most chose to display their artistic styles in song
and dance. Each group presented their work to
their peers during the cell-a-bration. In addition
to the viewing, each student brought in a dish to
share that reflected an organelle of their
choosing. It could either relate to the organelles
structure or function.

YAM 2013 Winners - Ms. Courtney Harper’s art students will have exhibits submitted in the YAM 2013
Art Show. Savanna Allen, a first grade student and Kelsie Gover, a second grade student will have their
works displayed at the Huntsville Art Museum.

Star Student - Star Student Jasari Juarez selected Mr.
Doug Page to share this special luncheon with him.
Jasari and Mr. Page were chauffeured limo style and
taken to Chili’s for a delectable lunch. Lunch was
compliments of Flint River Baptist Church.
We’re Learning Spanish – Students in the after school
care program are learning Spanish with Rosetta Stone.
Students are learning basic Spanish, conversational skills,
introductions and greetings, and simple questions and
answers.
Law Day Poster Competition - Fifth grade students created Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. posters for the
Law Day Poster Competition. This competition is sponsored by The Alabama State Bar. Students read
the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry to prepare their minds for the Civil and Human Rights that Dr.
King fought to protect. Each student chose a quote by Dr. King that became the theme for their poster.
Winners will be announced in May.
ACE Students Discover Wetlands –February
15 th – 18 th , the 5 th grade ACE Class, along with
their teacher, Cheryl Jenkins, went on a Field
Trip to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. They spent
the entire weekend immersed in the study of
Wetlands. The best activities were the
dissection of a squid and walking in the salt
marsh.
Seuss Celebration – Dr. Seuss had an amazing
week of celebration in “Bulldog Country.”
Students were read highlighted books by faculty
and staff each morning. Mooney Monday
kicked off the event and students were served
Moon Pies. Hats were worn on Top Hat Tuesday and silly socks on Wacky Wednesday. T-shirts from
places around the world were seen Theodore Thursday. Friday was overflowing with fun: Green eggs and
ham for breakfast, Seuss trivia, Reading the Most Coast to Coast, partner reading across grade levels, and
birthday cake passed out by the Cat in the Hat. Special thanks to Mr. Chris Olson, Chattanooga Bakery,
Griner’s, Star Market and Publix for supporting our event.
Jump Rope For Heart – Twenty-four students participated this year and raised $577.75.
