01635 553553 56 A Victorian brass-bound mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Richard Hornby, Liverpool, circa 1840 The 2.25 inch diameter four-pillar full-plate movement with Harrison’s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, and split bi-metallic balance with cylindrical compensation weights, with spotted backplate and 3.5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds and power reserve dials and signed Rich’d Hornby, Liverpool No. 781 to centre, set in a brass bowl with screwdown bezel mounted within gimbals, the threetier case with brass capped corners and edge bindings and applied with a plaque engraved Greenwich Mean Time to lid, 14.5cm wide Richard Hornby is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in Liverpool 1814-51. £800-1,200 25
