of <strong>the</strong> sea wa ter derived SO 4 has <strong>in</strong> fact been reduced, <strong>the</strong><br />

rela tion ship between As and ‘sea wa ter derived SO 4’ is<br />

sim i lar to that shown <strong>in</strong> Fig. 9 for As and ‘miss <strong>in</strong>g SO 4’,<br />

<strong>in</strong>fer r<strong>in</strong>g that a con trol on ground wa ter As might exist<br />

even with out <strong>the</strong> pre cip i ta tion of Fe sulp hides. Also, <strong>the</strong><br />

Stiff dia grams (Fig. 4C) for <strong>the</strong> Holo cene aqui fer <strong>in</strong>di cate<br />

fresh wa ter sig na tures and Cl (and SO 4) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se sam ples<br />

may be derived from sea spray from <strong>the</strong> SE mon soon. The<br />

Cl con cen tra tions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fresh wa ter <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tran sect is gener<br />

ally an order of mag ni tude higher than <strong>in</strong> fresh groundwa<br />

ter from upstream Ha noi (
