Seed was used at the rate of three pints to nine
square yards.
A good catch of grass does not imply that you
have a good putting-green. It takes three years
at least for these creeping grasses to mat. During
the process of their matting they require eternal
vigilance. to destroy the weeds, injurious insects,
and grubs. The whole green must be carefully
nursed, with proper cutting, watering, and top-
dressing when necessary. Always roll with light
wooden rollers and not too much of that.
It is always best to water between sundown and
sunrise. A thorough soaking every week or ten
days is better than frequent superficial sprinklings.
The weeds hardest to eradicate are chickweed
and pearlwort. My experience has been "get busy
early and eradicate both by cutting them out."
You will have no pearlwort if you do not roll too
heavily and water too superficially.
I am in favor of putting both Yarrow and White
Clover in the fair green mixture of seeds where the
soil is particularly sandy, but never any clover in
