Act I, Scene 1 29
Wendy Ought I? Of course it’s frightfully fascinating, but you see I am only a little girl, I have
no real experience..
Peter That doesn’t matter.
Wendy Very well. I will do my best.
The boys cheer
Music 17: Wendy’s Song (Part Two)
(singing) The first thing that a mother does
Is keep a tidy home
And to make sure that all her boys
Know how to use a comb
The boys look at each other, puzzled
John Oh Wendy, they don’t understand
So please explain some more
For comb’s a word that I’m convinced
They’ve never heard before.
Music interlude. The boys line up and Wendy indicates that their hair needs tidying. The boys do
so
Wendy (sweetly)The next thing it’s plain to me
You don’t know how to dress
For each and everyone I see
Is quite simply a mess.
The boys now look at each other, dismayed
Boys We’re sorry that we look a mess
There’s one thing to make clear
With hand on heart we promise you
We changed our skins last year!
Music interlude. The boys now endeavour to tidy their and each other’s attire
Wendy I expect my children one and all
To mind their Ps and Qs
And no-one comes inside my house
Before they’ve cleaned their shoes
The boys look at each other uncertainly
Boys Oh, Mother, we will try our best
But what’s a P and Q?
And up till now we must confess
We’ve never cleaned a SHOE!
