Act III, Scene 3
Music 39: The Darlings (Reprise)
Wendy
John We came back; I bet you thought you’d lost us
Michael
Wendy I can’t describe the adventures that we’ve had
John We actually flew
Michael I killed a pirate or two
Wendy
John But we’re home, of that we’re very glad
Michael
Wendy Oh, Mother don’t be angry with Peter
He saved my life, there can be no doubt
Wendy Sorry we went away
John But now we’re home to stay
Michael And once again we all can stand and shout …
Nana howls joyfully to the music
All Oh we are the Darlings
Everyone a Darling
It’s the title of our family
And it’s hard to ascertain
Quite where we got the name
Lost Boys I’m just a Darling! That’s me
All Yes, we are the Darlings
Remember we’re the Darlings
But there’s no cause to make a fuss
For as people walk our way
We are very proud to say
We’re the Darlings, that’s us!
They all exit, except Wendy and Mrs Darling, laughing and talking. Their voices die away but
the music continues
Mrs Darling turns to find Wendy sitting by herself
Mrs Darling (softly) Your thoughts are still there with him, aren’t they? Wendy, why did
Peter not come back with the others? We would have looked after him.
Wendy (loyally ― for she has heard it a hundred times before) No, he wants always to be a
little boy and have fun. Besides, you wouldn’t be able to see him very well. You can’t see
Peter clearly if you are grown up. Mother, I wanted so much … I wanted …
Mrs Darling holds her miserable Wendy close. She understands
Mrs Darling Why don’t you visit him?
The idea had not occurred to Wendy. She looks up sadly
Wendy Visit him?
Mrs Darling Yes, next year ― and every year! I don’t suppose he has anyone to spring clean
for him.
